  1. You have all been so helpful and I cannot thank you enough! Danni3113, I really appreciate that you understood the "stuffed sausage" feeling I have and your advice has been noted. In fact I ordered a merino wool Henley from LLBean this morning! I had never heard of a "down sweater" but looked that up also, and will be watching for sales. Keksie, I just purchased a pair of waterproof rain pants yesterday on sale at Academy sports and am glad to hear that yours were useful. I am taking notes from all of the advice here and just feel very grateful for Cruise Critic members.

  2. I am a cold natured Southerner planning a May Alaskan Cruise. I have read everything on CC about packing and planning for Alaska. I understand the recommendation of "layering". I have been experimenting with the "layering" concept and am finding it: very uncomfortable. Is there a secret to the "layering". I believe that the first layer must be something you could wear by itself, therefore the long underwear, cuddledud, type thing would not work. I need some more specific advice as to HOW to layer.:o For example, today, I put on a long sleeve light weight shirt, then a sweater, then a fleece jacket, and on top of that a light weight rain coat. I had on fleece lined leggings under jeans. I was terribly uncomfortable. I was not cold, but felt confined. Does layering have to be uncomfortable?

  3. I must thank you again, yes, it is a single booking - round trip through Delta. So now, I can stop worrying. Knowing me, I'll find something else:o, but maybe not, I am so excited about this trip and have planned and planned. I believe it is all good now! I really appreciate this board, it has been very helpful to me.:)

  4. Yes, we are flying on Saturday and the Cruise leaves on Monday, but I did not know what would happen if we missed the connection. The flight was set up through the airline as a Multi-city flight. At the time of booking I did not question the timing, I believed that the airlines would not book flights that could not be made. I didn't start thinking about actually making the connection and what would be involved until today, and then I became worried. I am glad to hear about the tunnels and that Mrs. S was able to make this type of connection. So am I understanding correctly that if for some reason we do miss the connecting flight, the airline will put us on the next flight? Thank you all for your help.

  5. I have a flight booked for May 2015 from Atlanta to LAX on Delta, then on Alaska Air to Vancouver. Our layover is 1hr 17 min. I have never flown connecting flights before and am extremely anxious over this situation. Since the Alaska Air flight will be considered International what is involved? I have looked over the Airport map and it looks like Delta arrives at Terminal 5, and Alaska Air is at Terminal 6, but I don't know if our arriving flight being domestic and the departing flight being international complicates the matter. I know the experienced traveler will probably laugh at my questions, but I admit to being a complete novice and worrier!:o

  6. You're very welcome - I'm looking better at the moment because a few regular posters have been mostly offline for quite a while;-) If you really want wonderful responses, ask Scottbee about local transit or Putterdude for the dirt on local hoteliers!

From your other posts, this was for a trip in May 2015, no? Don't worry too much about the airfare - that is a LOT of time for the airline to change their schedule. If, or more likely this far in advance, WHEN they do then: a) the new timing may be better for you; b) if it isn't then traditionally all airlines allow rebooking of flights without a change fee when THEY make an alteration. Just put a note in your diary to check the flight schedules on the airline website every couple of months.

If you want to plan for the worst, put aside ~$7 a week in a jar and you'll be able to afford the change fee by next May. That's just one Starbucks trienti mochafrappachino unless Georgia is a lot cheaper than here!

Martincath, You were right!:) The airline did make a change to our scheduled arrival time, it was only a 20 minute difference and didn't qualify us for a free change, but did allow me to make the change to the flight I really wanted without a "change fee" only paid the very slight difference in price. Thank you again for your reply to my post - I would not have known that I could make a change this way. I am very, very happy now, all plans are perfect and just have to wait for May!

This thread has changed to the topic of food and I have a question for the locals...I have read about a French Canadian dish called Poutinerie. Do you recommend we try this, if so, where?

  7. Martincath: Yes, May 18th,2015. I am not use to booking airfare, so did not realize that the schedule could change, thank you for that information. We usually cruise out of Port Canaveral and drive to the port. We only flew twice, once from N.Y. and once from Ft. Lauderdale. I am almost as excited about visiting Vancouver as I am Alaska. Once we began planning this trip I realized Vancouver is a destination in itself. Now, if we could just win a lottery so we can just travel, travel, travel!:D

  8. Oh my Gosh!!!! You two are so wonderful, I could cry. Thank you so very much for putting my mind at ease. I am a terrible worrier and over think things, however, I made a terrible mistake when booking my airline tickets, picking a late arrival when I meant to pick an earlier one, and now it cannot be changed for less than $200.00. The ticket price is the same, that $200.00 is the change penalty. So that is why I think I am now obsessing over my hotel selection. Now, after hearing from you two experts on the area, I am not going to think about it anymore!!! Thank you, thank you.:D

My husband says thank you too, he is tired of me reading reviews to him:o

  9. I am in need of your help with location also. I studied the google map in the post above, but I am afraid I am still confused. We have booked the Best Western Plus on Drake. If I am looking at the map correctly then, this hotel is not in a good location. It is right at Granville Street and also seems farther away from downtown then I thought. We have two nights here before our cruise which leaves on a Monday. We arrive late so really only have one full day to explore. I was planning on visiting Stanley Park and the Granville Market. We got a very good price for this hotel and I had read many positive reviews, however, now I am second guessing this choice. What is the opinion of the Vancouver residents of this area? Our cruise is next May, so I have plenty of time to make changes if necessary. Thank you very much.

  10. Just be aware that another post cites Captain Larry of Orca Tours as receiving a DUI while he was operating a tour.

It seems a conscientious employee notified the Coast Guard while the tour was underway.

Thank You for the "heads up" on this situation. I am waiting to book, but I sense that the business being as well established as it is and its good reputation, that Captain Larry would be replaced and the company will continue to do an excellent tour. I am waiting though, to be sure.

  11. I suggest you allow and hour. It shouldn't be a marathon walk- with a tight time frame.

Budget Queen, I have gotten so much great information from post of yours throughout Cruise Critic. We will be traveling to Alaska for the first time on the Legend, May 18th. While in Juneau, I noticed that you recommend Orca Enterprises for the Whale Watching, and I have contacted them. I also want to visit Mendenhall Glacier that same day. So, should I plan on going to the Glacier early and do the whale watch tour in the afternoon or the reverse? What do you recommend? And is about 3 hours an appropriate amount of time to allow for the visit to the Glacier?

  12. Bristol it sounds like we are on the same ship! I'm planning on booking a one way flight to Vancouver using kayak (cheapest flight) and then booking with Southwest coming from Seattle (they don't fly to Vancouver). Southwest tends to have great prices -- plus two free bags! -- but they don't let you book as in advance as other carriers (and for some reason don't show up on kayak or Expedia or Travelocity). After calculating, I think we can save about $100 doing it this way.

Thanks, CruisingGiants, I had looked into one way flights, but found that the price for one way from Seattle was as much as round trip! I did not check Southwest, so will do that.

We are on Carnival Legend, May 18th, have not gotten to the Roll Call yet.

  13. Thank You, again. I will check out the Kayak site, and then try to make a decision. If I don't book in the next few days, I think I need to take a break and wait for the PFD as recommended by Slider 728. You can make yourself crazy , of course this helps to pass the time while waiting for your Cruise. :D
