Safe to assume there will be no NCL cruises in Australia/NZ at all this coming southern summer. 😞

Quite likely no other large ship cruises either.

I agree, I can't see any large cruise ships allowed over the next 12 months or more. Such a bummer.

  2. I am elite on both lines, and I choose by itinerary. I would choose the Princess cruise because it is a longer cruise, it will be cheaper re airfare, and it's good to try something new. As the other posters have pointed out, both lines are similar. Although I might do the Celebrity cruise if it meant I was jumping a tier.

  3. Overall, I would rank Celebrity, Princess and HAL as 4/5 star, and Royal, Carnival and Norwegian 3/4 star. I have not cruised with MSC or Costa.

    As per your categories above:

Entertainment/shows - Norwegian. On NCL Epic we had the Broadway production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and a Cirque tent experience. Both outstanding. Celebrity would be my second pick.

Activities- this is a tough one, the Royal ships are geared towards families and have video game arcades, rock walls, mini golf, dodgem cars, flo rider, that giant arm that swings out, and the air flyer thing (sorry I cannot recall the names) so for families I would pick Royal Caribbean. For me I enjoy trivia and lectures and movies which I can find on most ships.

Food - Celebrity, Princess and HAL have fabulous MDRs, great food and service. I don't use the buffet on any ship very often.

Staterooms - Celebrity. On the newer Princess ships the cabins are better, although very small balconies. We had a mini suite on Majestic Princess that had a tiny balcony.

Crew Service - I generally find crew service to be pretty good. I have had some exceptional crew over the years who go above and beyond what is required, and I have had a dud or two. But mostly good service on all lines.

I checked but unfortunately there are no New Zealand cruises round trip Sydney on any line where the timing matches up very well so that trip would involve planes and cars.

Not all lines have released 2023 NZ itineraries as yet so you may find something that works.

For Sydney, there is so much to see and do, especially around Circular Quay. Walk around the Opera House and into the Botanic Gardens. Catch a ferry to Manly and follow the crowds along the Corso to the beach. Lots of cafes, restaurants, pubs and shopping, and wonderful views of the Bridge and Opera House from the ferry. You can buy Taronga Zoo tickets with your ferry ticket from Circular Quay, Taronga has the best views of any zoo.
