Just got off our cruise last Sunday.  I always do Stone Island on our own.  We had a lot of new cruisers on our sailing and only two people were brave enough to join us (and had the time of their life).  First of all, honestly if you know your left from your right and can walk briskly for 10 minutes on a flat surface, you can find the ferry easily.

Get off ship and take the shuttle through container area to the shops where many people are drinking and shopping.  Just keep walking through, ignore everyone offering you tours, taxis.  Anyone telling you, that it is too far to walk.

Get outside of the gate, you will see a block curving wall to your LEFT, just follow it (there will still be taxis asking you where you are going, just ignore them).  Honestly 10 minute walk by the wall.  It dead ends at a street, look up and you will see a sign (not new and neon, old paint that says stone island ferry).

Cross the street and walk down the uneven dirt road (you will start to see water. ). Pass the free roaming chickens .  You will see a small salmon colored shack (probably with some people just hanging around drinking). Go up to window, wait patiently for woman to end her phone call.  Pay $2 us pp for your round trip ticket (friend has pesos and I believe she paid 90 pesos).  Get your tiny tickets, walk to the right of shack and down the gangway to small dock at bottom.  When a boat pulls up, get in it. Expect to do it on your own (no one will be standing there trying to help you like on the ship tenders).

Short ride across water.  When you get out walk up short hill.  You can walk the beach which is long.  About halfway down you will see busier restaurants (tours go there)

OR you can jump in the back of a waiting truck (bed converted with benches and covered ) ask how much to Letys (should be $1 apiece).  There were other people in our truck who got out at the first stop (bear in mind that they are driving on a dirt road behind the restaurants you can,t see the beach during the ride).  We started to get out and our driver thankfully said no (as this was the stop in the middle of the beach).  When he stopped next time it was for us.  Directly between Lety,s and Carmelitas (which is actually where I always go.

Ruben at Carmelitas is awesome and can set up massages (1 hour $30 us, hubby did this). (Atv 30 min for $20 friend and I did it).  Basically whatever you want ask them (I’m sure letys does the same.   Buckets of beer $1 apiece, awesome food.  Shad, sun loungers whatever.  I think we spent $200 (with generous tips) for all the above plus a bannaba boat ride steak nachos , shrimp tacos etc.

of note here, when the truck driver dropped us off , we told him to pick us back up at 5:30 pm (all aboard was 6:30 pm).  He was there early and Ruben knew what time we had to leave.  We walked onto the ship at 6:03 pm.

If you didn’t get or appreciate my humor, then you probably need to take an excursion.  If you “get it” then go on your own,  either way you will have a great time.  Question is how adventurous are you and how much do you want for your money.  Two ship friends who didn’t want to wait for us (as we waited for all who were invited ). Left on their own and then paid $30 apiece for a tour at the dock).

Hope this is helpful.  I found my way the first time years ago with detailed instructions from  CC.  We had such a great time and enjoying retirement we are doing it again in two weeks ,  Happy sailing everybody.

Copying this entire post into my trip file for July...only question I have is....we are not a quiet bunch we would like to lounge at a place with a little action, you know music and such (will have 7 kids and teens)  Should we try another restaurant to hang at with our crew? any suggestions?

  2. I just want to bring on a box or two of capri suns for the kiddos...we don't drink soda and I allow them one juice box a day after they have met their water quota. Should I just try and take it on in my carry on or try and pack it. If they say no its only $4 lost so not biggie

  3. Okay was able to get it changed. Now can anyone tell me which restaurant the reservation RCCL makes for you typically is. We only have 3 options (Chops, giovanni, and Izumi). I just want to be prepared with my other two restuarants and dates/times as soon as we board so we can get that squared away. Our cruise is sold out. Will we have to wait until we get to the room to find out what they chose or can they tell us when we go to make the other reservations?

  4. This was posted on another thread about using golf carts in Bonaire. We headed there in a couple of weeks and we plan on doing this.

Donkey Sanctuary, the Sea Salt "mining", the slave huts(both white and red), the light house, Lac Bay and oh so many Flamingos

  5. Thanks for posting. We were just going to walk around but now we just booked a 4 seater. Company said they can accommodate our party of 5 since its two adults and 3 young children since the 4 year old can sit up from with us. So excited to do this.

Was it easy to get around? Do you drive in the street?

  6. really u can't tell she kidding

Are you for real? You can't borrow a child. What is wrong with you?

Children are not a item to be used as a means to save some money on a dumb cruise. Sick,sick,sick...

Gosh I wonder what would've been said to my response that I was packing up both of my kids and sending them to the original poster.

  7. Good Morning,

Need some help. We are leaving on the Serenade in 10 days. We booked a 3 night dining package. Yesterday I ran across the galley brunch and it states we can do it as part of our package. But we still want 3 dinners so we want to change to the 4 meal package. How do I do this on line?

Also what happens if the reservations are full by time we get on the ship. Will they refund us if we can get the resturants we wanted?

I tried to find it but couldn't. Thanks for any help

  8. According to the calendar on their website you're in port 1pm-8pm on the 13th and their trip is going from 1:30pm-5:30pm.

Our sailing skewed a lot younger than our sailing in 2015, but it still wasn't a rowdy type of party atmosphere. It was a very laid back, relaxing experience. That's not to say you couldn't seek those types of activities out, I think the nightclub is open pretty late, but that's not really our style.

We went on a New England/Canadian cruise and literally by 9:30 everyone was in bed :'). We're just hoping some of the evening events and venues are not graveyards.

  9. We did not have a stroller. He walked. As I said, we did stop and grab lunch when we first got to town, so that broke the 20-25 minutes of walking into two shorter stretches. :) It was a nice walk. The scenery was enjoyable and he liked stopping and looking at everything.

You know now that I think about it the walk there really isn't my concern. He'll be full of energy at the beginning of the day. It was the walk back after swimming all day and water makes you tierd. But I think someone mentioned we get a complimentary ride back. So no stroller it is. But the walk there will help me get my steps in for the day;)

  10. We walked it last time I was there. Made a pit stop at a local restaurant for lunch and a Banks beer. I will say that a taxi driver (located outside of port) followed us for about a quarter mile trying to talk us into catching a ride for $5 USD. We opted not to since DH had been there before and knew we were going to stop for lunch. We had a 4 year old with us. I never felt unsafe.

I have an active 4 year old and I am debating bringing the umbrella stroller. He almost never gets in and I'm left pushing an empty cart. But as we mothers know the minute we don't have it they will become sleepy and "tired". Did you have your 4 year old in a stroller?

  11. I am devastated that when I started reading this thread an hour ago that I just knew by the time I reached the end I would get to your post about this being resolved satisfactorily. This is not okay by any means.

I pray for this situation to come to a excellent ending for you very quickly. You have more patience than I think I would have shown. Best of luck to you. I'm waiting with baited breathe on the outcome. Enjoy your cruise.

  12. So I usually do my own travel planning. Never used a TA. We booked on board the Oasis last month and decided to see if we could get some perks from a TA to transfer the booking. No one was really offering anything worth the trouble of transfer until one offered $200 OBC and two specialty dining packages. She also never said a word about having to pay an additional $500 toward our deposit since we had a reduced deposit for booking on board. So we transferred the booking to her. Then she sends the email okay we need $500 more toward deposit and opps because you booked in September we can't give you the dining package and the OBC is just $100.

I just want my reservation back in RCCL hands. And yes I checked reviews for this agency and BBB and they have an A+. I am so disappointed. So how do I get my reservations out of this woman's hands?

  13. Another vote for the Norwegian Fjords. I wasn't a scenic cruiser type of person and just went because it was on my mom's bucket list. I am now converted. I even got up at 4:30 AM to see seven sisters and the entry into Geiranger and I am sooooooo glad I did. It was gorgeous.

  14. It won't get you on the ship, but check the TSA website regarding your comment that the paper ID won't get you through the airport. You can totally get through TSA and on a plane without any ID for a domestic flight. Go early, be prepared to answer questions, and hope they find her in some database.

My dad flies domestically about once a year without any ID.

Interesting. We didn't worry about checking TSA because we knew her work Id would suffice. But this is good to know. GA DMV website is the one that says TSA will no longer accept the temporary identification. Funny that the info conflicts with TSA.

  15. I too work for an airline and would never let my pspt expire, why?

Not sure how this answered my question. Not that it's any of your business but she just had a baby and it just wasn't a priority for her. She didn't know about the cruise it was a surprise Not much time for her to prepare so I'll take the blame for wanting to give my sister who had some postpartum depression a week of relaxation. Don't be so quick to boast your superiority next time.

For those of you who offered constructive suggestions and opinions thank you.
