  1. For what it's worth, I chose assigned dining in August when it was just me and my 9yo GS. We were seated with 3 other pairs of single adults traveling with a single child. It turned out wonderfully, the kids had a ball and the adults took turns sharing a bottle of wine every night.

  2. I recently took my 9yo GS on the pride, and I was concerned about the scavenger hunt for a different reason. There were a lot of kids on this cruise and they were very rambunctious. Around the pool, they were playing very roughly, running, pushing, pulling / dunking. My GS likes to play rough, and I had to remind him (and his playmates, since their parents were not around for the most part) that this was not ok around a crowded pool. At one point I got the kids to agree to play “tag” – so that if they tagged someone they would have to jump in rather than being pushed.

Eventually, someone in uniform came and told the kids they weren’t to run or jump at all.

Back to the point – I was worried that the boys would disturb other passengers if they were let loose on the ship on groups for the scavenger hunt. As it turned out, it wasn’t one of the camp activities he chose to participate in anyway. And a few of the groups I did notice about the ships were kind of rowdy.

  3. Unless you enjoy watching forklifts there isn't much to see.....its an industrial area where the port is.

    I wouldn't plan on arriving till 11 to 12

Thanks. I am not normally one who has to be first on the ship, I just want to figure out what to do from the time we land (7:30 am) till 11 or 12.

  4. My first two cruises (out of FLL & PR) my husband & I flew in a day before. This time, on the Pride, It is just me and my 9 yo grandson. We are flying in the morning of. Taking this risk because of the short flight from Hartford, plus the fact that there are 3 later flights on SWA that will get us to Baltimore before 2.

In any case, we will arrive @ BWI at 7:30 am, and I have a couple of questions for those of you familiar with the area & port.

    1. I was thinking after we land, we would get our luggage, have a nice breakfast at the airport and then take a cab to the port @ 9 or 10. What is the earliest we can drop off luggage at the port? Is there anything to see within walking distance before it is time to board?

    2. Is a cab the best way to get from BWI to the port? How much should I expect to pay?

    3. Staying one night post cruise @ Homewood Suites in Linthicum. Would there be a big price difference between taking a cab from the port to the hotel Vs. taking a cab from the port to BWI and using the Hotel’s free shuttle?

  5. Thinking of cruise from Maryland this summer. Has anyone done this on carnival. Debating between this and out of new york city on NCL. Any suggestions which one. Just a note, we have done NCL a few years ago.

I chose the pride for my “free” cruise next month. I am taking my grandson. Originally planned to drive (6 hours from Hartford), but I was able to get $64 one way air on Southwest - $256 total (probably less then gas+parking).

  6. eewie....to sideline a bit...it does happen. While in Santa Barbara, our relatives live here, we were at the bar of a restaurant. A waitress came behind the counter area. Dumped a basket of leftover bread in a steel bin. While we were there waiting for our table, another waiter came over, picked up the steel lid and fished out bread (bare hands) and put it in a basket!! YUK!

While I was in college (30 something years ago), I waited tables at a family owned Italian restaurant. We served salads family stile – A large bowl of lettuce topped with 4 small piles of veggies – peppers, cukes, cherry tomatoes & shredded carrots. This came with tongs and individual salad bowls for customers to serve themselves. Upon clearing the table, anything left in the large bowl was broken down to be re-served.

This restaurant also served baskets of individual-sized loaves of bread. Any bread that was left in the basket un-broken was re-served, and here is the worst part, any “broken” bread left in the basket was collected in a large bin to be used for breadcrumbs, croutons, stuffing etc.

To this day, I still don’t eat anything served “family style”, and very rarely will I eat bread out of a communal basket.

  7. Heres what I would do.

Split the difference. Get a one way car rental for the trip to miami, and one way airfair home from FLL on SW or Jet Blue. With 2-3 drivers, the trip down wont be as bad, since you will all be looking forward to the trip. Maybe extend the vacation a little by giving yourselves a night or 2 in an inexpensive motel in MIA or FLL before and/or after the cruise.

Also, If you are intent on 5 in a room, take advantage of the gym locker room for showers & dressing - maybe make the kids use them instead of the room.

  8. So as to piggy back this question me and my wife are taking our first cruise on 5/24/13 to renew our Vows on our 5 year anniversary on the Pride. We want to purchase the cheers program but i am wondering once the 15 drink limit is reached will i not be able to purchase any more drinks. I like to drink beer and can put back some shots. (and not be sloppy drunk, but we are some drinking people) and there has been more than one occasion that a 12 pack can be put back by me during a basket ball game

We are beer drinkers also. One thing we did is on port days, when we would normally drink less than 15, we would occasionally order unopened beers to keep in a coolr in the cabin, giving us a few extras for sea days.

  9. Could it be that people would pay the 1/2 deposit, then upgrade later after the deposit sale is over. This would mean they now have to pay the full deposit, which no one tells them about, causing Carnival to cancel their booking? The buyer would have to pay the new price which may be higher than the price they originally booked?

I see plenty of posts where this has happened or they lost their corner aft because of it and are not happy.

I seem to recall a number of posts describing the following issue with the 50% deposit:

Customer books under 50% deposit special and puts down 50% deposit. At some point customer puts in for price drop and is not told that full deposit is now required. Carnival cancels reservation due to insufficient deposit after supposedly sending a warning email, which customer claims to not have received. Like I said, I recall reading about this a number of times. Regardless of “fault”, I’m sure this created a lot of confusion and chaos. Perhaps Carnival decided it was not worth the trouble.
