  1. I'm an new to Princess but not new to cruising so it's nice to see positive reviews. Thanks to everyone who posted their experiences!

To the OP I would caution you on putting too much stake in negative reviews. Some might be completely accurate but quite a few are the result of unreal expectations that weren't justifiable.

Secondly is the reviewers overall tolerance level. Example: The tolet was backed up for 1/2 a day. Person 1, while inconvenienced, knows things go wrong was just happy it was fixed relatively quickly. This person also probably doesn't post a review.

Whereas person 2 gets so put out that it wasn't fixed within 5 minutes of their report. That person then posts how their cruise was ruined and will never sail again.

Thanks again to all who posted.

    Happy sailing!

  2. Having much experience with the MagicBand technology at Walt Disney World, it sounds to me like Princess is doing a good job with this roll out so far. There will be glitches. We LOVE the MagicBands which work on similar RFID technology. We have bracelets, but I can understand preference for many other ways to carry a Medallion. Princess is offering these options which is good. With the bracelets we have used you never have to fumble with a key, dig for your guest card, check off your name on a list for a reservation, claim your individual photos by hand that are taken by photographers, or ever use a park ticket. They also are used for airport transfers to and from the resorts. YES, there are some privacy issues that some may be concerned about but the travel industry already keeps almost all of this information on you anyway--you just don't know it. This is how upsells are often decided, I suspect move overs are decided using this data, and particular enticements may also be offered. For convenience, I'm sure I'll love the Medallion experience though our ship will not yet be outfitted until after our cruise.

Considering that the leaders of this program were previously the architects at Disney it bodes well for the Carnival roll out.

I am truly excited about this new program. I had been debating on HAL vs Princess for the past year because I wanted more than what we now get from CCL. This program was the deciding factor. So much so that we cancelled a land based vacation and booked the Crown for our anniversary trip.

Personally I feel the privacy concerns are overblown. Every time I read a comment about it in this thread, I couldn't help it but I was visualizing the poster as the John Malkovich character in RED.

  3. Monitoring has nothing to do with it. It's the ability for a 3rd party to intercept the email while it's on the way there. Someone could conceivably intercept every email and just sort through them at will, though they're probably as likely to find someone sending a CC number complete with expiration and CVV, which would be much more useful than most brokerage account data.

Fax isn't encrypted but theoretically it's point-to-point and you'd have to put a device on the other end to intercept it. These days though, with the fax machines being virtual and possibly using a digital line, it might be possible to intercept those in bulk without being on premises. And, of course, since people are mostly sending sensitive data via fax, it might be really easy to find financial information.

Then again, the snail mail submissions are probably scanned and stored on a server... access-protected but unencrypted. :D

Is this a real risk? Who knows? This information seems like it would be of limited value to a hacker... but if it's so much easier to get at than the list of credit card numbers in someone's database, you never know.

The take away is: protect yourself. Remove all non-necessary information including your brokerage account number, any total dollar values, and any other holdings in the account.

Really good advise. I've emailed mine every time and never an issue getting the OBC.

I wipe out acct #, all $, other holdings and only send cover page plus page showing my CCL shares.

All a hacker would glean from my email is my name and address (public knowledge anyway) and I have an acct at Fidelity.

    IMO very limited risk.

  4. OP has provided valid feedback on their observations. I have noticed similar dedgradations myself.

For the life of me I can't understand why keyboard heros start the flaming. Maybe less time behind a computer screen and more time IRL maybe? Just a thought....

Let's face it. There have been cut backs on Carnival that have produced a reduction in quality.

As a shareholder in CCL I applaud their cost cutting measures. As a customer, well, I am trying their other lines.

Not to say I won't ever cruise Carnival again.. Its just that I want to try something different.

  5. Definitely comes down to expectations. We have different expectations for our 3day Carnival cruises than we do for our 9-15day cruises on Princess and Carnival. FWIW our last 3 day cruise in Princess was the wildest one we have ever sailed. You probably dislike the BCS ports for all the reasons we really like them.

Not saying you're wrong, just have different preferences.

I agree with you 100%. The short cruises from Long Beach are nothing but a convenient, inexpensive "get away" for those of us from the southwest. A long weekend if you will. Similar in intent to a trip to Vegas.

At least for us the cruise is cheaper than Vegas LOL

  6. Firstly I'm glad your hubby/child is ok. Being a hubby/child myself I can so relate!

The thing most striking to me is the fantastic attitude you both have over the incident. So many folks today would be suing or asking for the moon. You both chose to own it and have a great vacation regardless. Bravo!

I hope to someday sail with you both and the 1st drinks on me..I meet ya at the swings! 😎

  7. On the sea days the ship is traveling at 20+ knots so you'll pretty much have wind as a result. A little less on the back in comparison to the side but still pretty breezy.

Yeah it was packed and rainy in Honolulu on that Sunday. We went to Duke's..good thing we had reservations. We overheard a couple being told it was a 3 hour wait for a table.

We are going out on the Imagination this Sunday. We've been doing the shorter itineraries due to work commitments.

  8. I've done both suites and prefer the VS. Preferably on a lower deck for a more covered balcony. The higher decks have no coverage meaning no privacy.

The room itself is smaller but the bedroom is separate from the living area so if 1 wants to nap the other can still use the other room without disturbing the napper. Very handy on long cruises were you might tend to be in the room more.

  9. What if you like to drink on your balcony? Then you have to constantly leave the room to go find a bar.... Perspective :D

    Point taken 😁

Most folks I know, including myself, aren't in their room much so I never considered that. Plus since smoking was banned on balconies I stick to OV or Interiors. Even less reason to hang out in a room.

  10. I often wondered why Carnival didn't enforce stricter penalties for alcohol smuggling....if you are caught smuggling alcohol, you will be removed from the ship. Watch how quickly alcohol smuggling is reduced if a persons vacation was at stake

I never understood smuggling. The hassles of having to run back to the room to make a drink. Having to hoard juices etc back to the room so you have mixers.

I'm on vacation and don't want to have to exert that much energy to save a few bucks.

  11. Whereas in a perfect world people would understand that cigarettes are killing them, as well as other around and would just stop, that's never going to happen due to the addictive nature of nicotine. Since we know it will never be completely banned inside the casino I think an excellent alternative would be to either have one night on the cruise smoke free in the casino, or maybe certain hours daily. What would be wrong with that compromise?

I personally think that compromise is acceptable.

There are drawbacks to this plan though...

As I understand it HAL does that today. But I also understand that the casino is dead on those nights from a pit boss I know. He left HAL because of the huge reduction in tips that occurred as a result. HAL also raised their rates to compensate for the losses which means even non gamblers (smoking or non smoking) pay more for those who want a non smoking casino.

  12. Back to my earlier post if you are doing something that interferes with someone else being able to enjoy themselves it should be you who stops the action. Using the logic that a smoker can smoke regardless of who it may impact. Would be the same if the people in the cabin next to you decided to play music as loud as they wanted it 5 am. Sorry you are tiring to sleep and their music is keeping you awake. But they have the right to listen to their music as they see fit.

The exception is ... loud music is against the rules.

  13. Haven't we all met that one person who complains about anything and everything? I know I have. I used to work with a woman years ago who was not ever satisfied with anything, and I do mean anything. It got to the point where fellow coworkers would engage her in conversation just to hear what the complaint for the day was. I had never met anyone like that before and when I read these reviews that go on and on and on about everything that is wrong, I think of Genny (fondly). May she rest in peace.

We had one of those in our office too. If she was given $10 million in gold, we swore she'd complain ... that they didn't provide a way for her to move it!

I tend to take reviews good or bad with a grain of salt. Everyone is different. Adding other review rating tools really won't change that.

  14. Some how I missed a point here. The thread was about RULES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED! So where does the current rule have any impact. My post was about all of the smokers who every time someone suggest limiting smoking cries it is their right to smoke. And that everyone else should just shut up because nobodies rights but theirs matter.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Unfortunately what I read in your statements is that your non smoking rights should outweigh the rights of smokers.

    Pot meet kettle.

Now as to the purpose of this thread..yes it's a rule you would like to see changed. I get that. But it's also a debate on those proposed changes. As such, the smoking subject will always be a heated debate and one should have a thick skin to join in.

As the participants have turned this debate into a circular argument over who's rights are greater it would appear to be at an impasse. Let's try some others rules to discuss as the smoking rules have been argued ad nauseum.

  15. I was on a fast attack sub in early 80's. When we came out of dry dock we had to go through a series of sea trials. One series is high speed maneuvers. We did about 2 hours of "angles and dangles" which are basically 60°+ lists side to side. Luckily I was duty on planes and was strapped in but we had a few guys get bounced around pretty good. I think our Capt. was trying to get to 90° but we never got that far lol.

So needless to say when I was on the Victory and she took a 10° or so list in the middle of the night I just hooked an arm on the bed and went back to sleep lol
