  1. I understand your point about the "me generation" as I am a juvenile probation officer and it seems that I see "me, me, me" all the time with a lot of young people and their parents (not all of course, some kids just do something dumb and have to work through the consequences). I guess my frustration came from you seeming to label me as one of these entitled "me" people. That was not what I was saying at all. I was basically saying that me and mine, meaning my family, will follow the

rules/suggestions/recommendations because I think that is the right thing to do for us. What everyone else does is their business as I cannot control what someone wears to the MDR anymore than I can control what you post in reply on this board.

As for your other point/statement about following one rule and breaking another, I do not break the other rules either as far as I know. We don't smuggle on booze, we buy a drink package (and do not share), we do not smoke at all so no issue there and we don't take pool towels home from the ship either. I'm sorry but I am rule follower :o Cannot help it, must just be engrained in me or something. As I said before: I am a probation officer, my husband is a police officer, father is a retired firefighter/EMT, and lots of military in the family too! So if I break a rule it is by accident. I just can't help but do as I am told :D

And if we are ever on the same cruise, first two rounds are on me.

  2. Ultimately human beings are going to initially do what they feel is right for their family. Purely by the length of this thread it is clear to see the discrepancies between priorities.

If people weren't thinking of themselves and their families, they wouldn't be going on a cruise in the first place, would they? They're not going for anyone else's benefit, surely?

What a strange perspective you have.

Maybe I should have worded it in simpler terms about the "me" generation and not used MandyMooToo's post as an example. Today's "me first and only" generation is as you pointed out different between those that follow rules and those that disregard rules.

As mentioned people will do what they "they feel is right for their family" and where they draw their personal line on behavior is not my business. It is confusing to me that some here will pick a cruise line that prohibits bringing booze onboard, smoking on the balcony. or even shorts in the dinner venue, and then come here to complain about it.

While breaking a rule (shorts in the MDR) has possible little or no repercussion; stealing in some areas of the world will result in your arm being cut off.

NOTE: I AM NOT SUGGESTION WE CUT ARMS OFF OF SMART SHORT WEARERS. JUST WANTED TO BE CLEAR.

Once again; we pick and choose which rules to follow, however the repercussions are yours.

  3. Wow, how rude. Did you even read my post and the context it was written in?? I did use the word "me" but it was in relation to what I and my family see as complying with rules/suggestions given by the cruise line and how I made it clear to my child and his friend that they would comply or not dine I n that venue. Rules/regulations are what society supposedly relies on for order. Since that's what we were doing your smart aleck reply was ridiculous.

As I have said, before on this thread, people pick which rules to follow and which to ignore.

You have pointed out that YOUR family follows the rules in THIS situation.

OTHER people do not follow the rules in the same situation also express the "ME AND MINE" thought process, thus my post of "And this explains why we are at as a society. Me, Me, ME!"

    Awaiting an apology.

  4. I guess the way that I see it is "me and mine" will follow what we feel is the suggested/appropriate/recommended/etc. dress code and wear our fussy, gussy outfits in the MDR at dinner no matter what the other diners are wearing. I cannot speak for anyone else's teens, nor do I really care about what anyone else is wearing as it does not effect how my dinner tastes (which is what I am really concerned about :D) . I felt like telling the boys that they could wear whatever they wanted was saying the rules (suggestions-whatever) do not apply to them and so I gave them a rule of my own. Dress they way I say for dinner in the MDR or find another, more casual place to eat. Maybe I am in the minority but I did what I felt was best for my cruise, just as everyone else here will do what they think is best for their cruise.

And this explains why we are at as a society. Me, Me, ME!

  5. I don't understand why someone like myself who asked an innocent question, who knew nothing about wearing "smart" shorts in mdr, who also didn't know whether their was an age limit (reason ages were applied) is getting such bitter replies!!! It makes a person think twice about posting on here.

The other option would be to go to the RCI website and look it up there. You may have done that and not liked the answers (known as FACTS), so you came here. Sorry, if you do not like the answers here which are unless back up by FACTS (no shorts in the MDR) are called OPINIONS.

If you think people are rude because you do not like the answer that your special snowflake can wear shorts, then that is your OPINION.

  6. Awhile back, a lady here asked if her nephew was allowed to wear shorts to the MDR.

    This part is very important.

At that time no further details were given.

About an hour later when a bunch of people said that there was a dress code (including me), the lady informs us that in fact her nephew is autistic and refuses to wear long pants. Lucky for me I had not posted something to the effect of; "one can always tell which children will be more likely to be successful in life (by being able to fit into society's norms and and customs) and which ones will end up to be working for them."

I would have felt bad had I posted that about her "special needs" kid especially after all the shaming of us that were now evil people.

All in all, we all chose everyday which rules to follow and which not to.

    EXAMPLE:

However, if your child goes on a job interview for a banking firm wearing a tie dyed shirt, shorts, and flip flops do not be surprised if they are still living in your basement at age thirty.

Ironically, as a child I hated wearing shirts and ties along with dress shoes. Then again, I now do quite nicely because I wear shirts and ties, and dress shoes. Your milage may vary as gardeners do quite well in my area.

  7. Teachers not only don't get a discount, but also get a penalty b/c they can only travel when school is out, which cost much more ...

As much as my local school taxes are and the amount the teachers get paid, I would figure that most teachers are private yacht owners.

  8. I'm usually up and about at 6 AM for coffee and to watch the hoggers claiming their territory by 8 O'Clock.

After the towels are laid on the loungers, they usually retreat back to their cabins.

I will go down to the pool deck and remove random towels. If they've save 5 chairs, remove #2 and #5. Or any other removal that breaks up the sequence

The results around 10 or 11 are usually interesting. :D

I like the way you think.

  9. our cabin attendant told us to keep it out of sight so he got a little extra something the last night.

Now we just keep our booze wrapped up in the shorts and t-shirt we pack for formal nights and no one is the wiser.

Coastralrap gets it. Especially compared to displaying your smuggled trophies on a shelf daring the cruise line to do something so that it becomes a topic on Cruise Critical.

  10. Once again we have to blame our public school system.

    PLAIN VIEW DOCTRINE

DEFINITION FROM NOLO’S PLAIN-ENGLISH LAW DICTIONARY

The rule that allows a law enforcement officer to seize evidence of a crime, without obtaining a search warrant, when that evidence is in plain sight. For example, a policeman who stops a motorist for a minor traffic violation and sees a handgun on the back seat may conclude that the driver is unlawfully in possession of the gun, and may enter the car to seize it.

  11. I've only taken an intro flight school test flight. I'm deciding if I want to drop the $12k to become a pilot. Got the syllabus right here.

    Ground lesson 4 - 2.0 hours

    (1) Safety of Flight

Collision Avoidance/Visual Scanning and situation awareness

No simulator, but I do recall during the intro flight, the instruction mentioned looking around for birds. A bird strike on that Diamond DA20 would have been bad.

True. I have spoken with a good friend who just retired from American Airlines flying 767s. Seems they are trained for bird strikes.

Difference between commercial and private pilots is the ongoing training. As a private pilot, you have medical certs, but no ongoing education or training like these guys.

If I choose to continue flight school, I won't be worried about quadcopters. I would be more concerned with uncontrolled airspace and other aircraft in my path.

    You miss my point completely.

There is a cry for regulation. Regulate! Regulate!

I don't want a drunk driving through my windshield at 75mph either. I don't need people drinking in bars. Laws exist and people break them anyway.

Besides, UAV already ARE regulated. Per current law, UAVs are not permitted within 3 miles of an airport and not above 400 feet.

Are there law breakers? Of course. My point was despite laws, people ignore them and drive drunk and run red lights. More regulation is not the answer to everything. We as a people like to generate laws to protect us from scary things regardless of the actual danger or current laws on the books. Regulate, ban them. Should we ban bars because some idiots leave in their cars drunk? At least those who would say yes have deaths to prove their answer. Quadcopters have not proven to be a serious threat.

If you fly your 210 below 400 feet (over houses) 3 miles away from an airport, you better be looking out for kites and all kinds of stuff. Most prudent pilots I know don't do this. Most UAV operators I know are extremely aware of the sound of a plane and do their best to avoid interfering with them. These hobbiest are very concerned about the FAA banning these and most operate them prudently.

Again, a quad copter is a horrible terrorist device. Get a real copter if you want to do damage or better yet, a Cessna and fill it with fertilizer. These copters are extremely fragile. The pilot in the original video had stones. A passenger with a powerful WiFi device could have splashed his $1500 toy. Many owners who forgot to disable the WiFi on the GoPro have seen such a fate.

I would be far more concerned about the security at your local airfield. I was astonished at how little it took for me to gain access to the stick of that DA20. No background check, no checks at all. Just an interest in learning to fly. How easy is it to rent a small plane at your airport?

I'm more concerned about these powerful green lasers that idiots are pointing at pilots. BTW, they are also regulated and it's illegal to do that.

    Great post.

  12. Are you kidding me? Seriously?!! Do you think we go into a simulator to train to watch for birds, UAVs (drones) or other aircraft coming at us?

Our training is simply the words "see and avoid" when it comes to this stuff.

Granted, larger planes have TCAS, and some smaller ones have TIS via their GPS, but none of this will warn of a bird or UAV, unless the latter has a transponder on it.

Do you have any idea how hard it can be to spot another aircraft, never mind a bird or small UAV? Take haze, the Sun, etc. into account and you'd be surprised how hard it can be to even spot a 767 at five miles at 2:00 position!

ATC cannot warn us about a small UAV or birds via their radar either. Only other aircraft.

My good man, you SERIOUSLY need to spend some SERIOUS time in a cockpit under a variety of conditions to understand what I am talking about.

License and regulate them. This has nothing to do with ships sinking or drunk driving. I don't need one flying through my windshield at 160 knots. Birds are bad enough, and I don't need these!

License and regulate? AMA (model flying organization) has rules in place for model flying including FPV aircraft. Your chances of hitting a model with your 210 is about the same as hitting Santa's sled on July 4th weekend.

And before you call me out on flight time, you better be able to lay over 20k and five type ratings on the table.

  13. I would love to fly around the cruise ship when i am onboard.

However, the fail-safe (in case of signal loss, low battery) works by gps... So if the cruise ship moves and the dji or whatever drone needs to return "home" it will be surprised as there will only be water and no cruise ship anymore :-) Godbye drone, goodbye gopro, goodbye brushless gimbal.

Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

As mentioned above, The FPV hobby makes cruising and other hobbies look cheap.

  14. Yes... but.... I'm pretty sure that applies to cruise-line personnel or contractors doing the photography/video on behalf of RCI. I don't think this guy with the drone fits in either of those categories.

So, do you believe that people should not be allowed to take photo of your ship from land? What if they use a tripod on one of the balconies from the condos as you leave port?

As for the contract goes, I believe that is also in place so that passengers can not sue the cruise line, if they end up being in the backdrop of someones travel blog photo.
