  1. I heard that in addition to being able to order the normal fare off the haven menu you can also order whatever is in the MDR that day in the haven restaurant. Can anyone confirm whether that is true? Thanks.

Given the prices of the Haven I would hope they could do that. Might take a while to get it to you however, might not be the temperature it should be.

why not just go to the MDR and get that entree?

  2. Are you staying on in Nassau? I couldn't imagine leaving the ship to spend $100 for watered down drinks and meh food at RIU when you have all the packages and a Haven suite to enjoy with only 3 short days. I'd make the most of what is on the ship. You may not even see the whole ship in 3 days:eek:

Don't you worry about that, he doesn't sleep lol

  3. Actually a mock booking today on ccl at today's rates can't really compare with the actual rate you booked your Ncl cruise at....most likely months ago I would think

For the numbers to clearly reflect what you want to compare you would need the ccl rate in effect at the time you booked your Ncl cruise

Currently an inside on the Escape is more than a spa balcony cabin on CCL Magic (the comparable ships in the same general market FL-Caribbean)

It was not when we booked, the CCL Spa Cabin was more, way way more, it was comparable in price to an M6 mini-suite in cost.

I cannot say every NCL cruise has I know has gone up in price, and I know many things can impact this, but the only factor important to me is these are cruise we might do, the others not at all.

So when I see a minisuite is now $1800 more than we paid, I know we will not book at this rate.

  4. Depends on the ship but the bathroom is nicer basically.

If you have one that has a larger than standard balcony, that might be worth it.

We chose to sail with one because at the time it was only $200 more for the mini vs the standard balcony cabin with 4 people ($50 each)

The larger bathroom and larger balcony was worth $200 more.

But at some point it would be not worth the price, only you can decide what that cost is.

  5. From a link here to some cabin pictures it appears that the B6 cabins no longer have the large balcony like the Away ships. Am I correct?

Well its larger but from the angle it certainly looks not as large, mostly because the regular balconies are larger.

The M6 balconies look more exposed than the Away - due to the wider beam of the ship?

  6. Why would they build a casino that is so open to the center of the ship. I sure hope that the smell of smoke won't be noticeable otherwise I will be annoying everyone with my chronic cough. I had issues with the casino on RCCL Oasis of the Seas and it wasn't as open as this appears to be.

some people have complained of this layout for smoke and some have not.

I agree with you kind of a silly design but hopefully it won't be awful.

  7. I am certainly not an NCL supporter or apologist, and there are lots of reasons that our next NCL cruise will likely be our last and to have concerns about NCL policies and changes.

    That said...

I must say in all fairness, for a first post, your concerns seem terribly overblown and really hard to take seriously. Sorry but there it is.

    8000 people... really?

The Garden Cafe won't have any seats?

    You can have mine, I don't eat at crappy buffet's . ;)

  8. What you are missing here is the word often used: subjective. I happen to agree with you on the dessert issue, I am not a dessert eater but when I do break down and have one on NCL I usually wonder, aftrwards, why did I bother?

No, I didn't, I did put IMHO... so this is my view.

NCL MDR's are not as good to me or DW as the other lines we have sailed. With NCL it's specialties or no deal.

NCL MDR = Often uninspired dishes with often uninspired taste.

When we were deciding on our next family cruise, the wave promotion came in the mail, all DW wanted to know about was the UDP and what it entailed. That and the idea of sailing on the new Escape, which at the time was only $200 more than the Getaway for an M6 is why we booked.

(we wouldn't book the same trip today as the prices have soared - currently the cheapest inside cabin is going for what we got an M6 minisuite for)

All the changes NCL did since we booked made us consider cancelling - and we still might - but for now we are looking forward to using the UDP for this cruise.

Anyway for us its simple NCL= Specialties eating only, thats what we have so hopefully it will all be good.

Buffett for breakfast is OK in a pinch...

  9. So if you were not getting the package, which lines would you choose that has better food? Other than HAL and Celebrity, quite a few years ago, I can't think of any ships with better or worse food than NCL> To me, other than Princess all the food is similar. Princess used to have outstanding food; that is the line, in my opinion that has really gone down hill, food wise.

We are not huge buffet eaters either, especially hubby, but we do think NCLs buffets with the exception of the Star are as good as they come and the convenience makes them attractive for some breakfast and lunches. Never would any buffet be considered as 4 star dining. they are what they are: a place to get a variety of foods, that are at least decent for a reasonable price. I do prefer breakfast in the buffet rather than the MDR.

Of course we don't cruise just for the food, we cruise for the variety of entertainment, the chance to see other places and the fun of meeting so many other people.

As much as people will poo poo this, Carnival's MDR is superior IMHO - both buffets suck. (I also prefer Carnival's steakhouse to Cagny's by just a little bit) Overall Carnivals MDR desserts are way superior to NCL's.

The specialty NCL desserts are good.

    Cunard's MDR was better too.

MSC was better some nights, some nights not so much so.

NCL its Specialties or nothing. Other lines don't have as many so its more MDR's there.

  10. I have one of the first brochures ever printed for these ships in my collection. I love inaugural brochures and try to save them all.

Epic, wish I could get a copy of that...

We cruised on the Countess in August 1977 (the week Elvis died)

San Juan- at sea- Caracas - Grenada - Barbados - St. Lucia - St. Thomas - San Juan.

Eastern Airlines L-1011 aircraft with a movie (smokey and the Bandit) from Tampa to San Juan.

A great and memorable family vacation.

I wish cruise lines still had the air add-on deals they used to have.

  11. As far as mainstream lines go, Carnival is offering "Journeys" cruises on select longer itineraries that will have throwback days with, among other things from the days gone by, will be a proper midnight buffet.

The problem with throwback days is no corresponding throwback prices. Although that might be a good thing for cruises.
