1. I live in Singapore.

Since there are just 2 of you, take a taxi.  They are efficient and inexpensive by Western standards.

When you reach the Arrival Halls, just follow the sign to taxis.  There are plenty and the queues are very well organised.

It shouldn't cost you more than $30 SGD to get from the airport to Marina Mandarin.

Have you seen my videos of the Marina Mandarin, Suntec City area?  Here you go.  Marina Mandarin is a nice hotel, and there is a walkway to Marina Square.  You can find plenty of eateries and even a food court at Marina Square, i.e. you don't have to eat expensive hotel food.  This video illustrates.  See from 2:40 as I make my way to Marina Mandarin from the Marina Square mall.

In this video, I show you how to walk to Esplanade MRT from Marina Square.

  2. A meal with the family at Tung Lok Teahouse, which is located at a shopping Mall called Square 2, on top of Novena MRT station. (And also near the Oasia Hotel at Novena, as well as the new Courtyard by Marriott).  This was a set dinner, priced at SGD $88++ (i.e. before 10% service charge and 7% GST).  Together with some coca-cola, the meal came up to around $110 SGD.

At the same mall there was there was a band called KAYNA, from Ecuador, playing their music in the atrium of the shopping mall.  Fascinating.

  3. Happy New Year everybody!  Best wishes for 2019.

On the last day of 2018, I decided to continue my exercise and did a long walk on my treadmill, while the torrential rain poured.  You could say that this was the exercise before the party.

On the first day 2019, we decided to have lunch at this eatery called Dian Xiao Er, which has many outlets all over Singapore.  This particular outlet was at the Marina Square Mall - this mall is connected to hotels like Pan Pacific, Marina Mandarin, and Mandarin Oriental.  Awesome food!

Let me repost some earlier videos of Marina Square Mall and the connected hotels. Pan Pacific Hotel walking to Esplanade MRT.

Thanks for your posts. Cannot wait to get to Singapore.   Question...we will be at Hilton Garden Inn.  Had an eyeglasses mishap. Not enough time to get new ones made. Is there a reputable place where I can get my lenses made to fit into my original  frames quickly? Place put my new lenses into the wrong frames. I also have the prescription.

How long will you be in SIngapore? We have many reputable spectacle shops in Singapore that should be able to help.

For me, I go to a shop called OwnDays.  They have branches all over SIngapore and they are well known for being able to make new spectacles for their customers within 30 minutes to the hour.  This is their website - https://www.owndays.com/sg/en/

GIven the location of your hotel, the following branches may be suitable.

You may want to check out their website to see all their locations - https://www.owndays.com/sg/en/shop/

  5. In Singapore, we have a shortage of labour.  Hence, businesses are looking for new ways to reduce reliance on manpower.  The following videos illustrate.

See the many robots moving around, for tray return at a Singapore Food Court located at Toa Payoh MRT station.  It makes it easier for customers to return their trays after consuming their food.  I was surprised at the number of robots deployed, five to six, and in a crowded area with high traffic. Cool.

This video shows you a robotic check out concept by this company called honestbee.  This place is hard to get to without a car, so I wouldn't bother if I were a tourist.

The firemen in Singapore now have robots to help them fight fires.  All very cool. Obviously it is much safer to send a robot to fight a fire, than send a fireman into the thick of the action.

Spotted this fully automated cleaning machine, cleaning the floors of Changi Airport Terminal 4 - Changi's newest terminal.  I guess you could call this a cleaning robot!

What a shame that all of your hard work can't be viewed! I always enjoyed watching your videos. Thanks for reposting the one about Marina Bay Cruise Terminal. We'll be seeing it in person next month.

Welcome to Singapore!  Hope you enjoy your stay here.

Since the end of the year is around the corner, check out this video from the local Singapore Police Force, singing Auld Lang Syne. Quite neat isn't it? Those are all real Police officers.

A food video.  Having some food at a food court at Clementi Mall, which is located next to Clementi MRT station, in the heartlands of Singapore.

Muscat Street is a tourist attraction in Singapore.  This is what it looks like.  Masjid Sultan (Jawi: مسجد سلطان), or Sultan Mosque, is a mosque located at Muscat Street and North Bridge Road within the Kampong Glam precinct of the district of Rochor in Singapore. It was named after Sultan Hussain Shah. In 1975, it was designated a national monument

This video shows you the Food Court at Raffles City, which sits on top of City Hall MRT station.  If you are passing through the area, or if you are staying at the Fairmont, be sure to check out this food court for relatively cheap eats.  Located on level 4 of Raffles City.  Just take the escalators.

  7. We were in Shanghai in June 2018 and stayed at the Marriott Shanghai City Center.  It was a busy hotel but we managed to snag a decent deal for a Family suite, which could sleep 4.   The hotel is located very near the start of Nanjing East Road.  In fact, we could even walk to the Bund if we wanted to, but decided to take the touristy tram to save some walking.

    REview of the Family Suite.

Tram ride.  Costs 5RMB per person each way.

  8. We were in Shanghai in June 2018 for a holiday.  The Yu garden 玉园 can get crowded.  But still worth a visit.  We didn't have any issues with smog in June, but I don't know about other periods of the year.

  9. I've been to Langkawi briefly.  2 key attractions.

One is the Skycab.  I shared some videos in another thread asking for info on Skycab.

The other attraction is the Kilim Karst Geoforest boat ride, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Videos below.

    Part 1

    Part 2

  10. The highlight is the SkyCab and that crooked bridge.  Don't be scared.  It's safe. I've been up there myself.  The views are decent from the top.  As for the oriental village, frankly there isn't much there.  Not worth going.  These videos give you an idea of the ride up.

    Part 1

    Part 2.

  11. There is a relatively new Courtyard by Marriott at the Novena area, which is right next to Novena MRT station. This is how the oustside looks like.

The hotel has a very nice cafe on the 22nd storey, called Sky 22. Went there for lunch and the views were awesome.

On a separate note, here is the Marina Bay waterfront, from the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes. This place would be even more beautiful at night!

  16. It is Durian season in Singapore! The "King of Fruits"! Either you love it or hate it. This season, there is a bumper harvest from Malaysia, and the prices are significantly lower compared to last year. Check out this Durian store at a Town Center. Mao Shan Wang durians were going for $12/kg.

While my wife and I don't buy Durians to eat, I'll join in when my fellowship group decides to indulge! Here are some videos of us enjoying Durians.

  17. Went to Resorts World Sentosa recently. This short clip shows the outside of Universal Studios, and opposite there are restaurants, as well as Hard Rock Cafe Sentosa.

Decided to have my lunch at Hard Rock Cafe Sentosa because they offered good lunch deals (3 courses) at $15 nett. I chose the ribs. Check it out!

And this video shows you the Hard Rock Cafe drinks menu. All prices in Singapore dollars.

  18. What a week it has been. The Trump-Kim summit came, and went. Probably the event of the year for Singapore. North Korean official TV produced an official documentary, for their people to watch. Here is the documentary, which I took the liberty to add some comments and text as the documentary proceeded. Plenty of good footage of my country, because Kim went on a mini-night tour of Singapore, visiting Gardens by the Bay (Flower Dome), Marina Bay Sands (Skypark) and the Esplanade.

  19. North Korean Leader Kim is likely to stay at the St Regis during the upcoming Trump Kim Summit held in Singapore. Co-incidentally, I had 2 nice dinners there in recent months.

This was a formal wedding dinner.

Another nice dinner, somebody threw a big party. Same hotel, same ballroom. Exquisite occasions.

Some views of Singapore. You can see Tanjong Pagar container terminal, which has been vacated. Now full of cars waiting to be shipped.

Great views of sunny Singapore, and you can see Marina Bay Sands in the distance.

  20. You may have heard of the Michelin Star hawkers in Singapore - https://guide.michelin.sg/en/michelin-guide-restaurants/liao-fan-hawker-chan

Another article from the local press. Hawker Chan has now expanded his business globally.

    http://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/food/hawker-chan-restaurant-by-one-michelin-starred-liao-fan-soya-sauce-chicken-opens-to

We finally tried Hawker Chan's soya chicken, twice in fact in the past couple of weeks. The place was crowded! But food was good and very reasonable priced.

On the first visit, to took away chicken and other meats.

On our second visit, we took away the soya chicken noodles and char siew noodles. That place was crowded!

  21. People coming to Singapore are wary of hawker cventers but they often don't understand that food is safer at a hawker center than at a restaurant at home due to the rigorous hygiene inspections and how they rerspond to complaints. If they do a spot check and their are infringements for hygiene or no hygiene training certificates places are closed or demerits issued. And the "scores on the doors" tell you where not to eat. In our case A or at worst B but nothing below.

    You are right!

    http://www.nea.gov.sg/public-health/food-hygiene/food-hygiene-standards-in-singapore

Back to the topic of Char Kway Teow, this is the store I patronise regularly, primarily because I live near this food center.

  22. Our love of Singapore started with Hawker food and the closest we ever get to a restaurant is a shopping center food court! Singapore is a foodies paradise as long as you experience hawker food. The secret is this where families have often prepared a single or couple of dishes through generations and are so proud of what they do.

Every day we head out for lunch somewhere. We also often stop by a housing complex and have a beer at a "coffee shop" before lunch where all the locals stop by and chat to us. We also head out on the MRT at "going home" time and simply get off the train where a large number seem to get off and follow the crowds out of the station where you often find collections of hawker places where people collect their evening meals.

I love to learn to cook by watching carefully as they prepare and when I get home I try it out.

The key thing is to always join a queue. If there is a queue then the food is good. Order food you are unfamiliar with and try everything. The dish in the piccy above looks so odd to western eyes but it was absolutely delicious with different tastes and textures.

But you know all this as you are lucky enough to be able to eat hawker every day. :)

Brilliantly said. Yes, we love our hawker food. There was a point in time when the Government stopped building new hawker centers. Thankfully, they realised their folly and now we get new ones springing up now and then, especially when there are new housing estates. The older ones get a new lease of life through renovation and refurbishment.

Hawker Centers are a national institution and the hygiene standards are very high. Food poisoning episodes from hawker centers are very, very rare. Because they are so rare, any significant case will make it to the news. You are right that restaurants and other forms of catered food (where transport from point A to B is required) tend to get hit with hygiene issues more often than hawker stores.
