  1. For our 25th anniversary we booked a Cloud 9 Spa cabin on the Dream when she still sailed out of NOLA. We went down 2 full days before the cruise and stayed  1.5 days afterwards. For the precruise we stayed at a Bed-n-Breakfast (actually cheaper than 2 night stay at a hotel) just off the St. Charles streetcar line and afterwards at a hotel near the airport. To get around NOLA we purchased all day street card passes, and wound up mostly just doing the RIverwalk and Jackson Square area. The night before the cruise cruise we met up with some other people from our roll-call for drinks on Bourbon St.

On board we treated ourselves to every Specialty Dining experience offer except the Chef's Table (too long and drawn out for DH's liking). We also splurged on additional spa offerings beyond what came with the cabin (thermal pass). We also opted for the CHEERS! package. In ports of call we booked mostly private customized tours, except in Cozumel as the Atlantis submarine was actually less expensive through the cruise line than booking on our own and paying for a taxi to the tour center.

After the cruise we used the luggage valet service offered just past the porter taxi line. They sent for $7 per bag all of our luggage to the hotel. We then went to the Frenchmen Market area for most of the day. After an early dinner we headed to the hotel and just crashed. Our flight was the midday so we slept in since we arranged a late checkout, had a nice lunch and took the hotel shuttle to the airport.

  2. The FunPoints M/C OBC will not show on your cruise docs, so make sure you print out the redemption confirmation from Barclay's reward program. If the OBC is not added within 24 hours of boarding go to Guest Services with the printout.

Just as a side note most of the time the better points vs/ dollars conversion at Barclay's is billing credit , that can be redeemed against any Carnival purchase. This includes booking deposits and payments, preboarding online FunShop purchases such as beverage or internet packages, prepaid excursions offered in Manage My Booking, and against Carnival gift cards bought through Carnival's website. you may also want to check if Barclays is still offering a billing credit of 10% when you pre-purchase your excursions through Carnival online.

  3. All the couples or wedding witnesses that I've talked to had their weddings, bookings, and walk on/off guests lists were done directly with Carnival or whichever cruise line they booked with. Technically all on board weddings and select destination (in port of call) weddings have to go through the wedding planning department of the cruise line, and bookings as well as the walk on/off guest all had to be listed with them. Ship sanctioned embarkation day ceremonies are usually held at 11/11:30am with the wedding party and all their guests usually boarding before 10:30 am, with the optional 1-2 hour reception being held immediately after the 25-30 minute civil ceremony (or religious ceremony when the bride or groom provides a clerical  person). If no reception is planned then the walk on/off guests are escorted off immediately after the ceremony, for those that do the reception by 2pm all non-sailing wedding guests are escorted off the ship.

This is not to say that the bride (or bride's family) did not make their arrangements though a 3rd person TA, as they can just as easily have access to the wedding planning department as they do for general or large group bookings as individual passengers do. It just seems odd that the bride would allow a 3rd party to act as an intermediary (middleman) for all their ceremony plans. But if the bride has simply book a cruise and is having a meeting lounge set aside, providing the officiant without involving the cruise line beyond the private event room then even the wedding party members are not eligible for priority boarding anyway, unless they have FttF, loyalty, or suite priority. In that case no priority boarding would be extended to the wedding guests, again unless they have purchased or earned priority boarding.

So my advice is to contact Carnival's wedding planning department at 1-800-933-4968 or the bride or groom (or their parents for more info) with those questions. As there seems to be much information either not given in the invitation or that you did not care to post. In general if the amount of friends and family sailing with the bride and groom will be booking 8 or more cabins they opt for the group booking, which offers group amenities which reduces the price to them of things like the reception or photo packages, but puts their sailing guests at the mercy of the terms and conditions of a group sailing.

Glad to hear they stop checking bags at a certain point!  That is when I bring on my 4 bags of vodka and rum

Your misunderstanding what is meant by checking bags. This means the porters stop accepting bags to be loaded on the ship for crew delivery to the cabin. If anything port security may look closer at the bags of those arriving later as the line tends to be shorter, giving them more time to do hand searches of carry-ons.

  5. Each passenger will have their own boarding pass. Each can check-in during or anytime after the arrival appointment time they pick. Be warned though some ports discontinue curbside porter baggage handling about 2pm, requiring passengers after that time to carry aboard all their bags. If a piece of luggage is too big for the terminal scanner a hand search might be done.

Almost all ports close their security and check-in desks 60 to 90 minutes prior to sail away, and ships can refuse boarding to any passenger that did not use their travel arrangements if the mandatory safety briefing (muster) is already underway. The muster drill is usually 45 minutes prior to sail away, and is not something anybody want to attend with luggage in hand.  Also there is the risk that the nearest parking lot to a terminal will be full and the overflow lot maybe a bit of a hike to the terminal or the running of a tram/shuttle maybe more spaced out.

I've known people that do work the am of cruising. But almost all of them have been port employees or work adjacent to the dock.

The last 2 ports , Saint John and the next day Halifax are the only ones in Atlantic time Zone.

    This is our Itinerary:

AS I said i's up to the senior navigation crew on board. The only time we changed ship's time on Carnival to local on a NE/Canadian cruise was when we had a day at sea between the ports in the Eastern time zone and Atlantic time zone. that itinerary was...

    DAY 1 - New York
    DAY 2 - Boston
    DAY 3 - Portland
DAY 4 - A Fun Day at Sea
    DAY 5 - Saint John
    DAY 6 -Halifax
DAY 7 - A Fun Day At Sea
    DAY 8 - New York

The time change was announced in the printed version only of the FunTimes published for Day 3 Portland that at 2am they would reset the ships time back to 1am and to adjust all personal timepieces before going to sleep that night. Reminders were then given by the MDR Maitre'D during dinner and at all major entertainment venues before and after the shows. A similar process was observed on Day 6 Halifax about returning to Eastern time for our home port return. Still many people on board on day 4 and 7 were confused about what the ship's time actual was arriving an hour late or early for activities to the point that the CD started to announce from noon till 3pm what hour it was on board.

Also unique about his cruise was the Elegant Nights were both held on port days, again Day 3 Portland and Day 6 Halifax.  Just to note Halifax frequently gets fogged out in the late summer and fall. If you plan on private arrangement tours make sure of the refund policy.

  7. If you are talking about a 1 or 2 outfit "fabric" or tailor's garment bag as opposed to a traditional garment "bag" piece of luggage that holds 3-5 outfits plus shoes and toiletries, then everything should be OK. As noted you may need to roll-up the bag, a shoelace is great for that., but I would add just so the conveyor belt does not rip it if it gets caught use a bin or two to hold it off direct contact with the mechanism.

I am currently 8 days away from turning Platinum and I am thinking about doing 2 5day cruises B2B, but with two different groups of people. The first will be with my scuba buddies and the second will be with my family. I understand that I will be Platinum for the second cruise, but since my wife and son will be staying in my cabin so they should also get priority boarding right?  The problem is I will be printing up all the boarding passes and tags prior to the first cruise and since I haven't completed it yet, I thinking it will not reflect my new Platinum status on the second cruise tags, right?   I know having her reprint the passes the morning of cruise would probably work, although problematic since she is not tech savvy. Any thoughts?

OK here's my take on this situation. cruise phase 1 you and dive buddies are sharing a cabin, phase 2 on the next turn around day your dive buddies disembark and your family arrives to share a cabin and on this portion you will reach your Platinum status. Technically each cruise is stand alone in loyalty status  and updates only after your are confirmed as finishing a cruise. The points to your VIFP listing may take 2 days to a week after that cruise to reflect your new status. This may not affect the second cruise boarding passes but you won't know until you printout your tags and boarding passes. The boarding pass and tags can not be printed out after 11:59pm eastern time the night before the cruise, even if your new status updates prior to the completion of the first leg of the B2B. So if Priority is not showing on the passes and tags when you print them prior to you leaving on the first leg nothing will change on those during your cruise. Here's is where an experienced PVP or TA comes into play, as they know whom to contact at corporate to make sure your family has the correct priority printed on their boarding passes and luggage tags with your new level.

As other posters have stated those doing a B2B have a special procedure that is followed for re-boarding their second leg. Generally after all other passengers have left the ship you will be escorted through the terminal for a special customs check and new in person check-in. This is usually done before the wedding party (if any) even arrives at the terminal, the process is usually followed by B2B passengers immediately reboarding for a private reception. Though you can ask the purser that escorts you through the terminal if you can wait for your family skipping the reception, the decision is ultimately up to port personel. In fact port personel may ask that you leave the building and return after they open to the (priority) public for processing.

SO my advice is to look over your boarding passes and tags at least 2 weeks prior to leaving on the first leg. IF the second leg paperwork does not reflect Priority status call your PVP or TA (not the general call center /customer service #) have them figure out the way to accommodate the deserved status for your family members in your cabin. ONCE adjusted printout the boarding passes and luggage tags for your wife and son. THEN have 2 plans in place A) where to meet  your family if you are allowed to wait for them off ship and B) where on board you will meet them if you can not wait in or near the terminal for them.

    Hello,

We are deciding whether to purchase the Cheers or not.

    ...

We have the drinks on us card as it will be a premier cruise only we have four days in port and the casino be closed most of the time, so questions:

1-  If we have do not purchase the drinks on us program, just asking, are we still limited to 15 drinks per day (alcoholic)?

No, you can exceed the 15 alcoholic drinks allow per day if you don't huy CHEERS! But you are still limited on when utilizing the DOU card to the 15 alcoholic drinks.

3-  If we purchase the wifi on board will it be the same price as sold before our cruise online?

The price in the online FunShop is discounted over the on board price of the cruise long packages, If you only want a day here a day there use of WiFi of the value or premium service can be bought only on board. The Social Media package can only be bought for the whole cruise regardless if ordered before or on board.

  10. The ship itself does not have a curfew but the main gate for the port might. We have visited 5 times by cruise, on 4 different line. Only once the main gate to the port had a lock out time of midnight, but it was during a high security alert on the island. People were allowed to go to the movie theater, nightclub , pub (they have food too), and bar within the Royal Dockyard complex until they closed up shop for the night about 1am.

Bermuda is a bit of a sleepy island at night. Most attractions and shops close at 5pm with almost all being shut down at 7pm. Restaurants in Hamilton, Saint Georges, and around the larger resorts will be open most nights seating until 9pm. Select resorts around the island may offer nightlife to tourists, but at some it's for on site guests only. The movie and fines arts theaters may have shows or concerts. The pubs and sports bar in Hamilton and Saint George will be open late, but you might have trouble getting transportation after 11pm.

In the evening public transportation  slows down, where during the day a route would have a bus every 15 minutes, in the evening, about 7pm,  till midnight they might run once an hour. Usually unless there is a special event like a street festival ferry service back to the Dockyard from St George stops by 6pm and from Hamilton usually the last ferry is around 7pm. After 10pm the taxis go on premium fares about 50% more than their day and evening rate.

This does not mean there's nothing to do after sundown, as many tour boat owners offer sunset and moonlight champagne and rum cruises, and certain times of the year family friendly bioluminescence tours. SInce the marina is part of the Dockyard complex there is no worries able being able to get back to the ship. These tours are very poplar and it's not uncommon to find out that the tickets for them sold out online before the ship arrived. It just means you need to plan things if you plan to attend entertainment outside of the dock area.

The ship will also have shows and activities running every night while in port. Also the casino will be allowed to open at 9 pm if the cruise line opts in for the extra permit.

  11. Below you'll see the charts with the final payment and cancellation schedules. As you can see a full refund cancellation  needs to be done at least 24 hours prior to the final payment date. BUT if you did not use a PVP or a TA I would do any cancellations at least 3 days prior to allow time for the paperwork to go through and follow-up the next day. Refunds can take 3-6 weeks to process.

Another option is, since you did not book any special restriction rate, that you substitute a different person for the friend that can not go. It may seem like a long shot to be able to have someone come up with the funds on short notice, but if you can afford it make the final payment yourself you can make private arrangements with another party to pay you back prior to departure.

**Super Saver: The deposit is non-refundable.

  12. The points needed for a DOU card can vary at the discretion on the casio manager. Usually 1,000 pts in slot play is needed on cruises 5 days or less , and 1,500 on cruises 6 days and longer. A slot point is equal to $2.50 in slot play but this can be money you deposited to machine or winnings re-invested in play. Points can also be earned on video poker and other electronic card games (excluding the Texas Hold'em table) but are at the rate of 1 pt.= $5 in play.

Those that play tables are not excluded but the formula on how the Pit Boss calculates comp points is a a closely held secret. In general it is said that for Blackjack a player needs to bet $20 per hand for at least an hour before being recognized to receive points. Then they need to play at least a total of 10, 1 hour sessions at that same rate before getting the card. Each type of game has it's own minimum betting requirements, that has nothing to do with the minimum table bet per round, to gain management's attention to rate a table player, even though every play that gets chipis asked for their S&S card.

Players that reach 5,000 points, in addition to receiving a "fare free" comparable cruise usually in a balcony for 2 for port charges only (must be book within 2 weeks of disembarkation and sailed within 90 days in most cases), will receive a DOU card at casino opening on their next cruise taken within 2 years regardless of if they pay for the fare or it's a casino special. Additionally players that reach at least 2,500 points tend to receive quarterly offers for reduced rate cruises with Casino Cash bonus for a couple of years..

  13. Here's how the funds deposited to your S&S account will be deducted from your balance:

    1) Non-refundable department specific OBC, this includes both booking promos and departmental Cruise Cash

    2) Non-refundable general OBC, includes both nonspecific booking promos and general Cruise Cash

    3) Refundable OBC such as from Early Saver price adjustments and port fee adjustments

    4) Carnival gift cards

    5) Cash and cash equivalents like Traveler's Cheques

    6) Linked debit and credit cards

Cruise Cash though a great gift or savings tool is one of the most restrictive in its use and is once on board completely non-refundable when compared to other methods of funding the S&S account. It is strictly for on board use and rarely holds any extra benefits or discounts. But it does allow for smaller increments than the Carnival gift card to be bought, $25 vs. $100. The Carnival gift cards can be found at a 10% or more of a discount or for points only purchase at several websites including AARP,  Allstate, various company (bonus redemption sites and discounted marketplace partners) and store loyalty &/or credit card reward programs. Gift cards widen your range of use by being able to use them to pay off the cruise and buy items and services (sometimes at a discount over on board) in the Cruise Manager, ex $51.95/person per day for Cheers! instead or $56.95/person/day on board.

Greetings! On our last cruise with RCL we had lunch in Chops on embarkation day. It was great, and avoided the inevitable crowds in the buffet. What’s the equivalent with Carnival (we’ll be on the Sunrise) - what’s usually open for embarkation day lunch?

Sadly unless you purchase the KEY program or have this as a loyalty benefit, Chops will no longer be a embarkation day option.

As for Carnival, beyond the Lido deck offerings, which can include (ship dependent) Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Pizza Pirate or Pizzeria del Capitano, Mongolian Wok or Chopsticks, The Carnival Deli, Salad Bar and Tandoor, there is little choice for embarkation day lunch and this depends on the ship and homeport regulations. On ships that have Seafood Shack, (Serenity area) Fresh Creations, Cucina del Capitano, Pasta Bella, The Captain's Pasta Bar, and/or JiJi Asian Kitchen these should be open for lunch on embarkation day. On a homeport by home port basis (due to local open flame regulations) you might find these venues, if offered, open for lunch during embarkation Ol' Fashioned BBQ, Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que, and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse.

When we sailed to Alaska from Seattle, they changed the time coming and going.

But were all your ports of call in the same time zone?

Canada/NE cruises tend to visit 2 different time zones for their ports of call. Some itineraries hopscotch back and forth between the 2, due to terminal availabilities.

It’s one bottle per person no matter how long the cruise is.

And yes, you can bring wine - or any alcohol - back on the ship during port stops. However, that alcohol must be turned in, and will be returned to you at the end of the cruise.

    Bob

I can confirm this statement as true from my experience on 2 Journeys cruises.

  17. Cuba is an odd-duck type of port for USA citizens. First off you will need a Travel Visa ($75 fee if you go through the cruise line to secure it for you) in addition to a passport book that is valid for 6 months past the last scheduled date of your visit. Next to be able to get off the ship in Havana you will need a pre-arranged sponsor, this can either be achieved with a cruise line bought excursion or with a local cultural/educational liaison. Next USA $ are no good here, as part of the debarking process prior to your excursion, cultural enrichment tour, or voluntourism experience you will need to exchange your money at the cruise terminal.Upon return to the terminal you can exchange the money back. This is not a port you can just decide as the ship docks to get off and explore on your own or even secure a "on dock" tour. Passengers from other countries have an easier time. Like Canadians can come and go from the ship as they please and do not need to have pre-arrangements for a sponsor.

  18. If you're asking if there are cruises up and down the Atlantic with exclusively USA ports on the itinerary you will be hard pressed to find one. Because of the Passenger Act all USA departure cruise ships must visit a "distant" foreign port. BUT there are cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean that leave from NYC and Baltimore that will stop in Cape Canaveral or Miami in Florida. There are also cruise from those 2  same ports heading north that have stops in Boston Mass. and Portland Maine.

  19. Actually on a Premier Casino cruise many times the casino management will pony up the extra port fee for the temporary license to have the casino open when docked (in ports that allow gambling). Unfortunately this is not something you will know until you attend the Premier cocktail party on embarkation day and get the player's schedule of events.

Additionally on sea days or when docking in the afternoon,  mornings the casino tends to set up a small continental breakfast, this will be available to all passengers. The casino with the nicer management teams will also get their premier guests non-alcoholic speciality coffee or teas those mornings.

With the increase of serious gamblers on these trips usually the food and beverage managements will assign more wandering servers to the casino. On most cruises there is no drink servers in the casino until about noon if it is open during the day, on a premier cruise they tend to come on earlier. Also it not unheard of for the casino to have the slots open overnight, though most drink server's shifts will be done by 3am..

The Funshop purchase cut off is usually 10 Eastern time the day before the cruise departs. To be safe and not have confusion once on board I would do so at least 1 day in advance of that and check the box on the purchase page stating it's OK to list on the details page of you eDocs then reprint the cruise documents to reflect the purchase.

With CHEERS! you can order any drink, menu or off menu, that the bar or lounge has the makings of and the alcohol prices out to $20 or under per glass, excluding doubles. As for figuring out what liquors should be on your sailing you can try to email Carnival about 2 weeks prior to sailing to see if they can confirm if specific labels will be available.

3-  Does anybody know which pier the Breeze docks in Cozumel, is it the new one?

Our experience is that Carnival tends to dock at the westernmost pier, not sure of the name or if that is the newest pier.

4-  I always purchased the premium internet package months in advance, when is the cut off date to purchase this and as Platinum member do I get any discount, if so, can I get it online or I need to purchase on the ship or call Carnival?

NO discount for loyalty level, the only discount is for purchasing it pre-cruise from the FunShops in your Cruise Manager.

5-  This will be a premier cruise where both of us get the drinks on us card, are we allowed to get a drink at the casino bar or do we have to be served while playing?

OK, here's the rub with CHEERS! and getting the DOU cards from the casino on any cruise. The big misconception is that you can get 30 alcoholic drinks for the perk plus package as many think, it's NOT the combined amount of drinks per 24 hour period is still set at 15 drinks per passenger. WIth the DOU cards technically you should be at least seated at a game or slot to get the perk, but a dollar extra tip per drink goes a long way to have the wandering servers "forget" to check if you are actually playing or not. If you go to the bar the bartender might allow you once to order, but tell you in the future you need to be at a table or machine for future orders. The bad part of the DOU card is they now try to limit the alcoholic drinks to what is on the casino menu, but each manager and host(ess) has discretion to override this. SO this is something you may want to discuss with them at the premier reception on embarkation day.

The additional money spent on CHEERS!, while not allowing for more alcoholic drinks to be ordered, will give you the option of sitting at any pool, bar, lounge, or restaurant to order any alcohol beverage that is included either direct from the bartender or from wandering servers. So in essence you will be paying the package price of CHEERS! to "upgrade" your DOU card to have the convenience of ordering throughout the entire ship and all of the various bar menus. Especially helpful when the casino is closed, but for many the drinks had outside of the casino environment many not add up to the cost of the package.

It may seem like an inconvenience to others but I have done pretty well stopping at the casino prior to heading to another venue to get a drink before dining or a show to maximize the DOU card usage. I do tend to put a few dollars in the machine when I stop, but not always, and never spend more than I had already planned to gamble on that cruise. It does take a little planning to do this and still get good seats a show, but like I said $1 extra cash tip goes along way to having the servers remember you an make themselves rush the order a bit too.

So we officially now booked in a Havana Interior room and so are our friends.  In speaking to Carnival again today to make the switch, they said technically it is a downgrade from a balcony to an inside which is not allowed.  But I politely argued that we were not downgrading in price and they allowed it this time.  I am good with that.  Really looking forward to the Havana area and the limited amount of people in the pool/hot tubs.  And our own bar 😃

The bar lounge is not just for the Havana cabins, it is open to all passengers when in operation, and not just after 7  pm like the pool area. Be warned because of the loudness of the latin entertainment, some passengers that sleep lightly have complained that the bar music can be heard throughout the cabin sections on that floor and the ones above and below. Bring earplugs if you fall in to this category.
