It was a mess and there were no cops directing any traffic coming from at least 3 lanes (some made a fourth) and merging into one to get into the port. I never mind waiting if the lines are orderly and I get my turn based on when I got in line.  But there were a LOT of "special" people who zipped by everyone else and cut into the line right at the port entrance.

Even when the cops are there it often goes like that as well, the possibility of a careless driving ticket is no deterrent.

As you said it can be a real clusercluck, when the Pride (or Grandeur) runs very late.

The best in this case that can be done is if you have your travel professional (or did yourself at booking) have at least one person in your car signed up for direct text travel or embarkation day alerts. IF there is a last minute significant delay a notice will go out about what time the port will open to start processing new passengers. Then just like showing up early on regularly operation day, you show up still show up an hour prior to the time on the text and hope for the best.

  2. h_ next to a previously purchased item from Manage My Booking usually indicates there is "hold" on the experience or product. It just means there's no confirmed contract or supplier with the service or product at that minute, but the cruise line hopes to find a equitable substitute before your sailing. If in fact the excursion or tour company contract is discontinued by the cruise line, you will get an automatic refund for the purchase.

The better question is at what point will Carnival officially give-up and admit that the tour has cancelled. This is important because it affects how you will receive your refund. If it is not "official" until you are on board you will receive the refund as on board credit to the folo of each named passenger, this OBC can be used for any on board expense. If cancelled by Carnival prior to embarkation day it will be refunded in the same form it was purchased as. The only bad thing there is it does take Carnival's accounting offices a few days to process the cancelation in monetary form, so if being credited back to a credit/debit card it can take 3/10 banking days before the amount goes back to the original card's account, but the worst is if purchased in whole or in part with a Carnival gift card as that can take 2-4 weeks to be mailed back to the address on file for the passenger that ordered the tickets.

  3. The trick with parking at the Baltimore port is you either need to arrive very early, in relation to the ship's docking time like 9:30am, to avoid the traffic and be prepared to wait at 2 sets of "gates" for things to open. Or you can wait till later and risk the police causing a game of duck-duck-goose of cars until the port lot has room for waiting cars to "stand" in that line as they allow a few cars at a time into the parking area.

  4. With most mass market cruise line, there is no reduced fare price for being under a certain age. All 1st and 2nd passengers pay the going booking rate for the deal they book at. Then regardless of age all 3rd, 4th and in cabins that can accomodate the 5th passenger all get a reduced fare that tends to be the same across the board on a particular sailing. In other words the 3rd person in a guaranteed interior cabin or in the owner's suite will be an incur exactly the same amount of fare over the standard double booking price for whatever cabin the 1st 2 passengers pick. What gets people confused is Carnival tends to average the price on the billing across all passengers in the same cabin.

  5. Can't help you with earliest as we tend to dawdle. We vacate the cabin by 8:30/9am as requested, head to the MDR for a last leisurely on board breakfast, lingering over coffee until just about no passengers are left there.

BUT i can tell you the latest we have been off is by 11:30am and that was when the Pride was scheduled to dock at 10am but made port by 9:30am. By noon (and were the last passengers through the CBP line) we were back at our car ready to drive the 3 hours home.

The nice thing about the Pride, is she is a smaller ship then what is being built now, so her max pax is just under 2,700 passengers. So disembarkation is quick once it starts, barring unforeseen complications like accidents on the gangway.

  6. I haven't sailed her since Jan 2018, I'm sure there are things that have changed a bit in 17 months, but here's my latest experience until someone that has sailed her more recently comes along.

In essence the Cruise Maryland terminal at Falcon Point is at least a good 8 hours from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Ships need to pass under 3 tide dependent for clearance bridges to make their way to the dock. This can delay docking if the weather causes unusually higher tides. So instead of giving you things in a clock like operational schedule I reference things to happen in a time table expressed in hours after docking or hours prior to scheduled sail away.

About 2.5 hours after the ship docks or 10:30am, whichever is later, the embarkation portion of the terminal will open for new priority passenger processing. When the terminal opens the waiting area for priority will also open, but more on this later. About 3-3.5 hours after docking is usually the first Arrival Appointments for those with general boarding. Prior to these times the Interline and Port Authority in terminal personnel will all be working on smoothly debarking and helping the leaving passengers move as quickly as possible out of the terminal.

Regardless of when the terminal doors open for receiving new passengers by 10am the port gates do allow passenger drop offs to happen and about 45 cars to line up for on site parking to open. Since you are being dropped off, the time the parking area opens is only a concern if too many people arrive too early as that triggers the Baltimore police and start to direct traffic coming in the port in to a "holding" pattern on the service roads outside of the the gates of the port. When this happens the police will start directing private and rideshare vehicles to keep circling along the loop of service roads allowing only shuttles, taxis, van services, and limos in to the drop off till some of the congestion within the gates dissipates (usually when the parking lot opens). There is no priority entrance for drop off nor parking.

Drop offs will drive between 2 luggage trains about 50 yards from the terminal doors, often the porters will direct the driver to let off passengers here to walk the rest of the way. If  there is a mobility issue for someone in your family/group indicate to your driver before getting to the terminal that you want door drop off  that the drive can inform the porters. Head to the set of doors on the left. Priority lines are at both doors, but the 1 to the right has the "holding area" for those with general boarding to wait in if they arrive too early for their Arrival Appointment making the area very congested.

Now here's the skinny on the "Captain's Lounge" at the port of Baltimore. It's really not a lounge like at other ports, you will be in rows of seats in the large warehouse still corridor  that leads to where they take the boarding photos and head to the gangway. There is no table with iced water, coffee, iced and hot teas nor are there plates of cookies nor breakfast pastries. Port personnel will direct you to specific section of seats in the order of arrival. Commonly there are 4 sections, the one closest to the photographer area is usually reserved for the embarkation day wedding party and diamond passengers. The next 2 sections will be used for platinum, suite, and when offred casino VIP passengers. While the 4th section usually hold those with FttF. There is more room for them to put additional seating if like on a Journeys cruise there are many more priority passengers than normal. There are no bathrooms in this area you you need to reenter the general boarding waiting area for restrooms, on the way to the restrooms are vending machines if your wish to get a drink or snack. Priority boarding usually starts about 5 to 5.5 hours prior to the scheduled ships departure time, so if you get in early you could wait 1-2 hours in the priority area.

If a priority passenger needs mobility assistance for boarding either by having the ship provide a just a crew member to help wheel them (in their own medical device) or a courtesy wheelchair and crew helper, that waiting are is out in the general boarding waiting area. This waiting area is usually limited to the person needing assistance and 1 adult care taker and any minor on the same booking. AInterline agent will be in this section directing traffic so to speak. Only a maximum of 3 crew members are allowed into the terminal at a time to assist passengers waiting here so it is not uncommon for those with priority that arrived prior to boarding to need to wait till general boarding has started before they are assisted to deck A to board.

    1.  If I put a debit card as the on-board expense account online, at what point does Carnival put a hold on the account?

The debit card number will be run at the embarkation day physical check-in as a test charge to make sure the number is good. The amount as listed in post #2 by JaxsMama is currently what Carnival has listed as policy in their FAQs section, but this is always subject to change and should be looked at again closer to your sailing date. Most banks will interpret this test charge as an incomplete charge marking it as a hold for 3-10 banking days (which could mean 3-15 calendar days depending on bank holidays). How the hold is handled is entirely up to your financial institution, and any questions about how holds against your account work should really be asked of a CS rep at your bank.

What isn't mentioned is if your daily average spending on the S&S account exceeds the initial test charge, an additional test charge will be made to insure the bank account can handle the additional spending. This triggers a new incomplete charge that the bank could interpret as a different transaction. At this point things on the banking end can go 1 of 3 ways ... A) the initial embarkation day test charge gets wiped out with the newer test charge prevailing for both date and amount...B) both test charges are left on the bank account each with it's own amount and date of pending charge...C) the 2 test charges get combined for a new total hold amount but with the embarkation day date being the original transaction date. Again only you bank rep can answer this, so contact them to ask how open end resort style room charges are handled if daily inquiries are made by the resort on the card.

Bottom line if a debit card is your only "credit" card on file option, you may want to think about funding the on board account with some combination of cash, Carnival gift cards, and Cruise Cash (purchased OBC).

On the other hand there are several ways to reduce your on board spending, still use your debit card, and not run in to additional holds while on board. It is as simple as prepaying for anything and everything you can prior to the day before embarkation day.

Where can I find day passes to the spa?  I am only able to see weekly passes.  Thanks!!

Single day Cloud 9 passes are only sold on board and subject to availability. IF al the cruise long passes sell out daily passes might not be offered at all (mostly likely) or only be available for use during port day hours (rare).

  9. All depends on which ship you are booked on or are considering as not all Cloud 9 Spa ships have a thalassotherapy pool. The T-pool can be found on the Breeze, Dream, Magic, and Splendor. These speciality pools have metal tube loungers with a bubbler unit under them that seat 6-8 people, a barre for low impact stretch exercises, and 2 waterfall nozzles for intense shoulder and scalp water therapy, all under a sky light. The Mardis Gras is also supposed also have a thalassotherapy pool but since it is on deck 5 and has not been installed yet (or no pictures published) I'm not sure if it will have all of the above features.

On the Horizon, Panorama and Vista instead they have a rectangular hot that seats 4-6 on tiled shelf. On the Sunshine and Sunrise there is no pool or hot tub feature that is part of the Cloud 9 area. I'm fairly sure that the Radiance, once the Victory goes through it's transformation, will be the same for it's Cloud 9 area.

I always leave my passport in the cabin safe when going on a Carnival cruise. Remember the cruise ship will get the passport to you if there is an emergency. There are some cruises (and tours) where the cruise ships keeps the passenger's passports in there position.

As long as it is left in the safe any cruise line's security will turn it over to the port agent, along with any other valuable documents or folios in there. BUT all else in the safe like jewelry or credit cards, and things in your cabin will have to be picked up at your departure port terminal from the lost bag claims area, upon return to the USA (though I'm sure they will gladly pass an inflated cost of shipping them to your home if you wish so).

  11. Thinking about it in Sept '18 on the Paradise I don't remember my husband getting chicken fingers or tenders as a snack from the buffet before seeing the evening shows (late dining). We don't do lunch there (prefer the brunch or in port offerings) so I can say for certain that they have done away with them. Though they did still offer at the Late Night Eats (11:30 pm-1am) the buffalo chicken sandwiches which use a chicken finger soaked in the buffalo sauce.

  12. You will need to discuss this with the Pixel sales team on board to be certain, as things vary between ships that still use the old print everything & you hunt for them format and the ships with the newer choose digitally then they make the print or download to your device as your package format. The Canvas portrait usually takes 6 hours to print and dry, so it is doubtful you can choose this item to be enlarged and processed from it's matching standard print (1 of the 5 prints you select) even as late as the day before disembarkation.

On a 3 day cruise your singular Elegant Night will still be the night of your first full day on board that is not a port day with a return to ship time of 6pm or later, this will be the night with the backdrops more suited in some peoples eyes to be done as the 16"X20" canvas, though personally we have one of us from the night they had the Mayan temple background. The canvas btw this does not come on stretcher for framing but is simply rolled and in a tube for ease of transport. Our canvas when they printed it only had 1" of unprinted area surrounding the photo enlargement when it was mounted on the stretcher and fitted inside the frame this small bordering was not enough so we lost about another inch of the printed sides, so make sure the photo you pick to be enlarged is not a close up.

I booked my wife and I in a spa room.

    Any recommendations, suggestions, etc?

If there are treatments you or your wife want book them ahead of boarding. The special discount pricing for spa cabins ends at the time they do the drawings in the spa of the freebies. Though they like to make you think your getting other exclusive deals with the flyers they deliver to your cabin in the am, most of those same offers are passed out to non-spa cabins 12 hours later or are posted the next morning as the daily special in the spa.

Visit the spa right after you eat lunch on embarkation day to get the tour. As spa guests they like to do this as a private tour (your Welcome Ritual) so they can target the hard sell to book therapies a bit more, but if you go early enough most of the time they are more optimistic about getting sales later on that they may not push as much if they see you are bored by the individual therapist's presentations.

DO make the most out of the Cloud 9 areas your spa pass grants you access to. DO use the free morning yoga or spin class passes if you never experienced these things but have been curious about them, just remember to sign-up no later than the night before the class takes place. BUT don't fall for the free private body composition analysis or any other free private seminar or assessment they offer you. These are generally guilt trip and body shaming attempts to get you to think you need to buy overpriced supplements or "health" products like shoe inserts.

  14. Not sure I understand your question or statement, need more caffeine.

A S&S account is like a debit driven checking account, it can be set up as an individual account or as a joint master account.

The Sail and SIgn cards with its individual folio number, are like debit cards while on the cruise, you can have multiple authorized user cards set to a master account. Additionally you can have some on your booking or a linked booking on the master account while others would need to fund their own account.

BUT if 1 master account is set up for all on a booking then all charges go against that the funding sources in that joint account, UNLESS you put a cruise long spending limit on each individual S&S folio number. This as far as I know this can only be done once on board if it adults are involved, but if it is for minors (under 18) you can do it online. If you set-up a master account during the online check-in process simply allow the others on your booking to have "charging privileges", if any of these other passengers are minors there should be a prompted to include a specific amount to be spent during the cruise or leave blank to allow unfettered spending. If it is a shared account with other adults and you wish to have a cap on their spending on your dime, all involved must go with you to the guest services desk and have that cruise long spending limit set for each individual folio number. These preferences can be changed or edited online right up to 11:59 eastern the night before embarkation (without the need to reprint boarding passes).

Though S&S accounts can be set-up with a mix of funding sources once you do your physically check-in, during the online check-in you can only pick 1, cash or credit. With credit only allowing for 1 card to go on record for the S&S account(s), you can at physical check-in or a little later at guest services add or change to other methods of funding on the S&S account including additional credit or debit cards. Charges against the account will go in this order

    1) Non refundable OBC including Cruise Cash gifts

    2) Refundable OBC including Carnival Gift Cards

    3) Cash

    4) Credit/Debit Cards

More than 1 credit or debit card can be put on file, but until you close out the S&S account you can not control how much of the final balance is charged to any single card. To tell the cruise line you only so much on this or that card for final billing you will need to go to guest services and direct them as to how much of the final balance to put against your cards of choice on the last night of the cruise and "manually" close out the S&S account. Also if a cruise long spending limit is set by the master account holder needs to be exceeded by the "authorized user" they can place cash on their S&S folio.

  15. No help here as to what equipment is allowed as all the fishing I have done when cruising has been off of charter boats that included all equipment, but one thing your SO needs to realize is that this will be strictly catch and release fishing. If he wants to keep his catch it will need to be professional packed for overnight package delivery back home. Unless he can make a deal with a local to cook the catch for the 2 of you and that you dine on it before re-entering the ship.

  16. In general individual price drops can not be applied for on a private group booking (as a wedding cruise should be booked as). The TA would need to negotiate a whole new contract on the behalf of the group coordinator (which most likely is the bride or her parents) for all cabins in the group, and this could cut into the group perks or the TA's commission.

The group perks can not be determined until the cut off date for the group booking to close out, this is usually 30 days prior to the normal final payment date. At that time Carnival will compare this group booking to all other group bookings on board for that sailing and assign amenity points. How amenity points are calculated are a closely held secret of the cruise line, but from experience it does have something to do with the total number of cabins/passengers in the group above the minimum of 8 cabins with at least 16 passengers,, the average amount for each berthing (bed), and how soon after the the itinerary is announce the group booking is contracted or renegotiated. Amenity points are then converted to on board experiences, in cabin gifts, nonrefundable OBC, private shore excursions, private reception parties, or some combination of 2 or more of these. The choice of what to pick is up to the Group Coordinator of record. In addition to the perks, the group coordinator gets a single fare free berth for every 8 double occupancy cabins above a 4B category booked as part of their group. The coordinator can then decide if the savings from the free berth(s) should be used to decrease fares for all in the group booking, but often this is rarely done.

For more info on the types of perks available for the group booking check this link out  http://static.traveltek.net/images/carnivalmeetings.site.traveltek.net/pdfs/group-fun-points.pdf

  17. The Dream offers Deluxe Family Oceanview cabins for 5, which provides more room than other standard staterooms. These cabins have the a king bed (or can be separated into 2 twins), 2 upper Pullman bunks and a sofa day bed. It also contains 2 bathrooms, 1 being the standard shower, toilet, vanity w/ sink set up and the second having another vanity w/ sink and a junior tub.

This chart from Carnival might help you compare some of the other features..

  18. Just some food for thought on the kids camp, but not necessarily endorsing the use of it for your family.

Enroll in it as it is included as part of your fare as much as the dining room, library, game/card room, theater, pools, or sports deck center are. Enrollment does not mean that anything has to be attended it just registers the child as a possible participant. to the camp activities Attend the embarkation day tour or orientation as a family to get the cruise long activity schedule for each age group. Most of the activities are just for the kids in a specified camp area while some are family oriented and done as a family unit elsewhere on the ship. From there you can decide if this could be something that benefits the family.

The camp operation is broken up into "sessions" with several activities offered at a specified time during that "session", but if only 1 activity appeals there is no reason to stay for the entire session. The schedule for operation usually runs ...

8-10am for interactive family playtime especially for parents/guardians of toddlers and children under 2

    10am-noon morning session of activities

    noon-2pm closed for lunch

    2-5pm afternoon session of activities

5-7:30pm closed for dinner though there may be several nights for the kids to attend a dinner with the counselors at the buffet

    7:30-10pm evening session of activities

after 10pm the camps turn into the Night Owl at fee group "evening care" so parents can enjoy some adult activity time

During each 2 -3 hour "session" anywhere from 2 -5 activities are offered, from the counselors simply reading aloud a Dr. Seuss book while costume characters visit to individual or whole age group craft activities to digital photo scavenger hunts with families making up the teams to being part of the Dr. Seuss parade. There are some at fee activities like the Build a Bear workshop for families (usually held away from the camp rooms), but no fee alternatives are also offered at the same time inside the camp. If any of the activities are of interest to your family all that needs to be done, as long as the kids are already registered during the online check-in, is to sign the child(ren) in at the camp area at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled activity. The only exclusion is the dinner with counselors, which require a seperate sign-up.

I get the closed toed shoes, but why not a skirt?

Because of the ladder like stairs that you will be using to travel through the ship. The Behind the FUn tour is immersive, and you will be using the passageways and staircases the crew uses. Some of these stairs are steep or are actual ladders and those behind you can see up a short skirt or loose shorts, and long dresses or skirts present an entanglement possibility.

So if I would put the cooler in my suit case bc it collapse to nothing. could I use it on board then? And could I take it off the ship and bring it back on at ports? Main reason for taking it would be to keep drinks and stuff cold for kids a one year old and 8 year old while at ports

You might be able to do that at one port, but on board security still reserves the right to confiscate the cooler because it is over the allowable size. Each time you reenter the ship you will go through another security scan and the bags will be x-rayed. Still a gamble.

If worried about keeping drinks or formula cool for the kiddos then bring a cooler that is at or below the acceptable size noted on the restricted items list at the Carnival.com FAQs. There are plenty of easy to carry versions of insulated bags out here that are of an acceptable size that will still carry enough for a person's day in port, personally I use a messenger bag style one.

You may want to also know large brands like Coke and Pepsi products are readily available in most Caribbean ports. With the local stores often selling them at prices less than a USA convenience store would (but not as inexpensive as a grocery store 12 pack).

As for keeping "stuff" cold I'll guess you are talking about foods. Only factory sealed package foods are allowed off the ship at many ports and at select ports absolutely no food is allowed off, post a question in your individual ports to get firsthand experiences. As stated not all cabins on the Sunrise have a dorm fridge so if you need to bring baby food for the infant you need to pack ones that don't require refrigeration and require no prep beyond the container being dunked in a bowl of hot water. Even cabins with the dorm fridge, the temperature is for chilling beverages and rarely gets below 48 degrees. I have seen yogurt cups and milk cartons turn within 24 hours of being stored in them.

The reason it is recommended to have a copy (or photo) of your passport comes from the State Department and it has nothing to do with finding the original numbers- if you need to apply for a replacement passport in an emergency then the copy of your passport can be used as proof of citizenship.

If you read the insert this is printed on when the Passport is issued it states the copy should be kept in a secured location away from harm (like in a at home firebox or off site safety deposit box) or with a trusted person not traveling with you storing it similarly.

Again if the copy or photo of this is lost, stolen, or copied it can not be reported to authorities as it holds no value as a proof of ID, to have your old # flagged as suspicious and a new Passport card or book issued.

To be able to get a no or low cost emergency replacement you will need to show proof of loss, either in the form of a police or security report or produce the damaged beyond use original, along with the legible copy or photo.

  22. Which ship are you on or looking at?

Only some of the ships with the Cloud 9 spa experience offer a true thalassotherapy pool with the spa pass or booking of a spa cabin. The others like the Vista, Horizon, and Panorama just have a private use for pass holders hot tub. And converted ships like the Sunshine, Sunrise, and soon to be Radiance do not have any spa pass exclusive pool or hot tub at all.

  23. Seems if things have changed since the last time, 2015, I did the Behind the Fun Tour. Our tour group had a tray with breakfast pastries and cereals boxes with with various juices, coffee, tea (iced and hot), milk (low fat and chocolate), and mimosas, in the lounge we were instructed to meet in, while everyone one was having their shoes checked, security pat down, handing over electronics, and signing waivers. About mid tour we reached the Steakhouse and samples of the Chef's special "taste" dish of the day was offered along with iced water, iced tea, and lemonade. Prior to heading to the bridge we were led to the crew lounge, and a bartender was there to take drink orders (at crew menu prices) of their limited bar menu, though water and ice tea were provided.

  24. This has nothing to do with phone use to get ahold of your husband's doctors but it is something that might help put his mind at ease for the cruise.

As someone who has cruised for 2 years during aggressive cancer treatment, and all with the blessings of my medical care team, before each cruise their offices would put together a mini medical file for me to give the ship's doctor. It would include my diagnosis, prognosis, current treatment plan (including) list of surgeries performed and planned), Rx medications required, otcs allowed, supplements suggested, along with a quick overview of possible drug interactions, and a thumb drive of any recent scans or lab tests. I think they may of also included direct (emergency) line phone numbers for the ship's doctor (or 1 in port) to contact should there be a complication or on board emergency.

As soon as I could I would deliver these to the sickbay sometimes prior to eating embarkation day lunch. Never had a "office visit" charged or even have the nurse or PA look at me odd. Before the end of the cruise I would return to sickbay to retrieve the envelope.
