We recently returned from a 31-day SA cruise on the Oosterdam, which I believe is the ship you are going to be on for your cruise.

Most likely when you are mentioning purchasing Wi-Fi, you are referring to purchasing an Internet package. The Wi-Fi available on the ship is provided free of charge and used primarily by HALs Navigator app for information access on the ship, plus it provides your connection to the Internet.

We had pre-purchased the Premium Internet package prior to sailing with the hopes of being able to do a 'Live' review of the cruise. You can find my "Somewhat Live' review here and you will notice my feelings regarding the Internet from my opening comments - along with other comments throughout my postings.😠😠

Overall, the Internet was somewhat usable for basic email functions, but generally useless for sending any amount of data (i.e. pictures). One of the people we were travelling with tried communicating through Whatsapp and his experience was no better then I had with the apps I was using.

Thank you for that information. I was intending to use it  to communicate with family through texting, since we have so many sea days.

  2. My husband and I will be on a South America/Antarctica cruise next month. We have a package that includes $400pp OBC plus $250 in Carnival stock credit, prepaid gratuities, and 2 nights of specialty dining. We have booked independent excursions, so I won't be doing Holland excursions. So, I was wondering how to use my OBC. We're really not interested in spa treatments.  I was considering purchasing a WiFi package with the onboard credit. Does anyone have experience with WiFi on a South America Cruise? Does it work well?

You can easily find things to do on your own.  We spent quite a bit of time just walking around the point--the intersection where you can see water in all 4 directions (Cuatro Mares I think at 2 de Febrero and Captain Miranda), the point, the sea lions being fed at the fish market, the hand statue, the lovely homes.  The beach on the Rio de la Plata is way nicer than the beach on the ocean which we did not expect.  I thought it was a beautiful place and enjoyed just exploring the area on foot and spending some time at the beach.

Thank you for that information! Looks like a good plan for us!

  4. I will be in Punta del Este on Holland America in February. I would like to have some suggestions on what to do at the port. My husband and I are comfortable with exploring on our own. Is that doable at this port?

I was in Copenhagen in 2016 and the bus line 26 also accepted Euros at least. The ticket was 4 Euros. If you pay in local currency the ticket is cheaper(approx. 3,20 Euros) but you could pay with Euros. But the change was given in local currency only.

I don`t know wether they will take USD as well.

    Thank you!

There is not a terminal at Langelinie so I don't really know.

But there is a shopping arcade perhaps they got one or else Google tells ne that there is one at nearby Indiakaj 1.

But type atm and langeliniekaj on Google maps and it will show.

    Thank you!

  7. While onboard the Koningsdam last month, my husband and I booked a 14-day Baltic cruise on the Nieuw Statendam. We chose a interior (I- category) on the Navigation deck. After doing a little research when I got home, I had second thoughts about the location of the cabin. It's located under the Lido buffet. I'm now considering changing the cabin to one on the Schubert level (7) and it's a J-category mid-ship. While searching for differences in sizes of the I and J categories, I found one site that showed that the inside

I-category was a little larger than the J-category. So, my dilemma is: Should I go with the I-category under the Lido buffet (noise?) or the J which may be a little smaller. We booked a Veranda on the Koningsdam, but I really don't want to spend the extra on this cruise which will also include a land trip while in Europe. We've done many cruises in interior cabins on Carnival and I am fine with them, but Carnival's interiors are larger (185 sq. ft. I believe) than the NS.

I hope this post isn't too confusing. I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions before I make a decision. Thanks!

So the incorrigibly nosy among us wanna know... did you jump on the upsell?:classic_biggrin:

For all of you on the edge of your seat, wanting to know what I did....Iast night I decided not to do it, then my husband asked me this morning if I was going to call my travel agent and try to get it. I thought he was leaning toward not upgrading. He said it was up to me. So, I called and it was gone! However, she gave me a list of other balcony cabins available with that upgrade cost and I took one on deck 6 mid-ship. After checking today's price for it, I feel that I got a good upgrade. :classic_biggrin:

Considering its a port-port-port with little day sailing or sea days  I would say no... your inside cabin will be just as good at night.

Save  the almost $100 a day  You wont get much value   There is a reason  the cabin is un sold.   Or  realize based on the schedule  it will be pretty much an un-usable benefit.  How will you use it?????

Good point. That's what I was thinking. Thanks for responding!

Wake view , between two cabin decks. If the price is right, I'd do it.

That's what I'm trying to decide😊. We've done 25 cruises and most of them have been interior (2 balconies and 1 lanai). We don't really spend much time in our cabin, but this offer has me considering. I've heard that many people love an aft balcony. However, I'm pretty money conscious and while I can actually afford it, I'm questioning the $449pp offer. This is for an 11-day Caribbean cruise. Thanks for your comment!

  11. I've been offered an upgrade (for a price) from an interior to a VS (aft balcony)  for our cruise next week on the Koningsdam. I would appreciate any comments on the pros and cons (stateroom 5221). I know that I need to decide if the price is worth it. Thanks!

  12. My husband and I have done many Carnival and Holland cruises and now are considering Norwegian. Could someone please explain the "free unlimited open bar" to me? Do I pay a certain percentage in tips after each drink ordered? Does "free" include any alcoholic drink I want? Soda (Coke)? I appreciate any comments/suggestions. Thanks!

  13. I have used the Carnival Hub app ($5 for whole cruise) for several cruises. I am now considering on purchasing the Social Media package ($5 a day) to be able to use Facebook Messenger for keeping in touch with family. Does purchase of the Social Media package include the use of the Hub app or will I have to purchase both? Can I post pictures to Facebook with the Social Media package while on the ship? Will I be able to check into my Southwest airline flight using the Social Media package? Any tips on this will be greatly appreciated!

  14. The person collecting corkage fees at check-in (after going through the scanners) has no idea if you have one booking number or two nor do they care. We've done a few back-to-back (10 days-11 days) and Collector Voyages with two segments and have always brought on wines on both embarkation days without any problem. We pay the corkage fee for all bottles except two on each occasion.

Thanks, Taxmantoo. Did you have one boarding pass? Did you have to show it again when you boarded for the second segment? I may try it and we'll see what happens.

  15. Bleh. Darned search function. The only thread I could find without making this a full-time job is this one. Basically they say to show them your boarding pass for the 2nd leg.

Thanks so much, Miss G, for researching this for me! I did a little research on it, but wasn't as successful as you! I will only have one boarding pass, so it may not work to try it on the second leg, but I could try and chance it and see what happens, right?

  16. I understand that it is allowed to bring one bottle of wine per person is at embarkation and more if you want to pay a corkage fee of $18 per bottle. We will be on a 21-day cruise. We will embark at Ft. Lauderdale and bring our one bottle per person, then after 11 days our ship will return to Ft. Lauderdale where more passengers will be embarking. Then, we'll continue for 10 more days. Can we bring on another bottle per person when we get back on in Ft. Lauderdale for second leg of the cruise without paying a corkage fee? In other words, can we bring 1 bottle per person on each leg of the cruise or just the initial boarding. If it matters, our cruise is considered an 11-day and a 10-day, but it's under one booking number.

  17. I toured with Blexie as well, and he is correct. Support of the Cuban People is the way to go and his tour satisfies it perfectly.
