Dogs4fun, you’ve got it! Burano it is. Photo was taken near Halloween a few years ago, actually while DYI-ing before an ocean cruise.
You’re up!

Name what is in the photo. First guess the river. After that name the town/city/place.
The person one who first guesses correctly gets to post the next photo! How wonderful to enjoy a performance at the Paris Opera!
Here's a photo I should have posted when I had the opportunity on October 31:
-
Or the Paris Opera House?
-
Are they Slavs?
-
Ah JP, I knew you’d beat me to it. Gorgeous place.

Peterhof Garden, Neva River?
Right! Have you been there? I hadn’t seen so many different colors of tulips before, not having visited Keukenhof.
-
Another hint: one way to reach it is by hydrofoil.
-
It’s not the Netherlands. It is near a port city visited by ocean and river cruisers.
-
No, it isn’t.

OK. I'll try an easy one because I like the colors. Not on a river but a site often visited by cruisers.

Sorry lgandgb — we were typing at the same time.

Not the Amazon, I assume. Somewhere in SE Asia?

It’s certainly a HUGE system of locks. When we went through, we were seated at dinner. I think I was the only one who went outside to watch. Quite an experience.

Found it!
Only because of your hints! When we visited, I wish I had looked more closely at the building’s decoration as I don’t remember this. Very interesting! I did visit the crypt and was awed by the ancient history of the whole building.
i will post an easier one soon, but I love these true puzzlers!

Is that the Bund in Shanghai? Which would be, I guess, the Huangpu River.
Fran
That was my first impression., too.

Wow! What a venue!!

Notamermaid, how about your “wild card for a new poster”?
PS Sorry I jumped the gun, Gnome 12
-
I think gnome 12 was close enough, I figured at least two of you were waiting to see who else responded. Dogs for fun, thanks for your photos and info. We didn’t enter the church. I don’t remember if the guide mentioned when the window was replaced.

It is indeed the Liebfrauenkirche in Koblenz, one of my favorite stops on our Rhine Cruise. The window and hole in the wall were provided so that people with plague could participate in the Mass without infecting the rest of the congregation. We certainly wouldn’t have noticed it if our local tour guide hadn’t pointed it out.

Getting close! Moselle and Rhine.........
-
Notamermaid and JP, you are both spot on. It IS an old church.

We love Venice, but it was great to take the water bus and get away to peaceful, colorful Burano, and more so the island of Torcello, which has an interesting ancient history. Here are more photos of Burano. We were there om the fall; from what I've read, both islands are busy with tourists in the summer.
