  1. I have bought OBC for my upcoming cruise (yes buying from Aus was a much better option than buying USD paying the middle man his fees)

Question, Can I withdraw cash from the casino or reception using the OBC? If so is there a cost to do so?

    Thanks in advance

  2. ***Thread title is wrong but I can't seem to edit it*** Should be Ruby vs GRAND****

Hello everyone. I am in the very beginning planning stages of a California coastal cruise. Princess has two (one that departs from LA and one that departs from SF) and aside from one Port, all the other ports are the same. I have never been to Monterey or Santa Barbara.

Neither have I been on a Princess ship. My husband sailed on the Star several years ago and LOVES it and my understanding is that the Grand is one of its sister ships. I don't know why he loves it so much other than the sound of the chimes (which I would imagine would be the same across all Princess ships???) and something about going up to a lounge or bar way up high on the back of the ship during departure.

The Ruby Princess goes to Monterey and the Grand Princess to Santa Barbara.

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on which they'd prefer and why. If it makes a difference, I think we are looking at a March or April sailing regardless of which we choose.

    Thank you!

We are doing the Ruby in 4 weeks. That one stops at Santa Barbara.

  3. We defiantly won't be getting a lot of sleep this time. Flying in from Australia landing at LAX at 6.00am which will be 18hrs after we leave home then have to wait for boarding at San Pedro in the afternoon. Just hope the plane is not delayed. It is my own fault but due to work commitments we couldn't leave the day earlier. Will be an early night straight after dinner. LOL

Don't normally sleep on planes but will try sleeping pills this time hopefully they will work and get get a few hours sleep.

  4. Exactly what I was saying.

I will go there for a breakfast or two and a lunch or two but if the food is not good I won't go back.

I think the OP is just saying - on a cruise you go to the buffet and it is gross - dont go back. Not saying no one should ever eat there. Because the complaints you hear make it sould like the people who hate the buffet and slam it, ate it quite often.
  5. I have been reading all of your helpful questions/answers before my upcoming cruise. (thanks)

I have read a couple in the last couple of days about people complaining about the food in the buffet.

What confuses me is, why do people persist with the buffet if the food is not great and go to the MDR where you get 3 courses of fine dining and where you are treated like a king?

    Just wondering????????????

  6. Thanks all for your help. I think I'll just buy the 120 minutes online before I leave. Seems like with the slowness it won't take long to use it up.

I guess with a captive audience they can charge what they like for internet that is as slow it was 20yrs ago using dial up. This day and age one would think it would be a reasonable speed. I guess why fix it when people pay for it as it is!!!!!

  7. Good thinking but do please remember that the Internet speed is horrible. Think dialup... You may well need more than the 30 minutes you estimate. You can save time by composing mail before logging on. If you need to reply to mail and need to think about it please just get your mail, log off, compose your reply, then log on again and send it.

    Good tip. Thanks.

  8. The cheapest "minutes" package Princess offers online is this one.

    120 minutes

    Item #6038 – $69.00

(This package includes 100 minutes for the purchased plan and an additional 20 bonus minutes)

They "may" offer a smaller package once onboard but I don't know if they do. I never used Internet access onboard until I became Platinum and got it for free.

I did see that but at $93.00 aussie dollars for 2hrs when I only need most probably 30 minutes max over the 7 days. I thought that would be better spent on cocktails. LOL

  9. I will never understand why anybody would waste their time going to a web page to get their email. I have always used an email client such as Thunderbird. It retrieves and sends my mail without having to connect to some stupid web site first.

Save yourself the hassle (and the shipboard minutes) and get an email client. The setup is easy these days and most clients, including Thunderbird, will setup the incoming and outgoing mail servers based on your email address so you don't even have to look them up.

Of course if you are forced to use the ship's computers you will be stuck with the web mail thing. <shudder>

Will be using the email app on my tablet. Will need the internet minutes to be able to connect to the internet to be able to use my email app!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. "Casual Internet" is 75 cents/minute plus a $3.95 activation fee.

What device will you be using with the expectation of logging on, looking over your e-mails, and logging off in no more than 2 or 3 minutes? This may work with a smart phone that you keep connected to the ship's wi-fi intranet so you do not have to establish a new connection each time you log on. The terminals in the ship's internet center--forget it, it takes 5 or more minutes after logging onto the internet just to bring up the sign-in page of your webmail provider.

I will just use my tablet. I assume it is only a one off activation fee?

  11. Not a SoCal local but a frequent flyer out of LAX and formerly LGB. I would have no issues recommending the 11:12 out of LGB.

Thanks all for your help. The 11.12 from LGB it is. We will do the express walk off.

Are there shuttles at the pier or is a taxi not too expensive?

  12. This stirs up memory's.

Had a booked a aft Balcony on Legend of the Seas out of Hong Kong like 18 months in advance. At check in we were given our cabin (an oceanview) when I question it I was told to see them onboard it was just a mix up.

No mix up had been downgraded to allow for a group that requested aft balconies. Was compensated with US500 onboard credit but still ruined the holiday.

Also wrote a letter to RCCL when we got home and received an additional AUS500

There were coupons in the room for someone else who we later found out had been downgraded to an interior. I guess it ruined their holiday as well!!!!!!!!

  13. It's certainly possible, but to quote the OP:

It sounds like they want a domestic flight from the ship to Vegas, not an international flight home to Australia. I guess an Australian TA might have made the more expensive and complicated flight from LAX to LAS for their client. I guess this is why I book all my own flights and bypass the TA's.

Yes. Just booking the domestic flights myself. It will be Saturday 25th March. No cheap flights with Southwest as yet. Only going out to Vegas for 2 days hence trying to get the earliest flight possible.

Didn't think about other airports (being from Aus, LAX just pops into the head) Jet Blue has a 11.12am flight out of LGB!!! I am assuming that would also be too early???

  14. Thanks everyone for you help!! I'm glad I asked as I was thinking about a 10.00am flight.

I had remembered last time in the US we disembarked off the Allure of the Seas. Self walk off with a 1140 flight and seemed to sit at the airport for a fair while.

Will book a 1.00pm to be sure.
