  1. My daughter, S-I-L, and GranDaughter are planning a Diamond Princess cruise end of January-February 2015. I am looking for an AirBnB apartment for them near the Open Tennis Venue in Melbourne.

Can any of you nice Aussies help me with Zip Codes (Postal Codes) near where these tennis courts are located?

    Thank you in Advance.

    Donna

  2. Hi, Greg,

I just bought San Francisco for Dummies for my GranDaughter at UC Davis because it was 40% off at the travel store in Pasadena (Distant Lands). I may need to get Scotland for Dummies. ;)

I have about 4 different books on Ireland, including Rick Steves.

    Donna

  3. Got it, Greg. A big thanks to you and your friend. Having worked in Publications at Lockheed for 37 years (technical manuals and marketing pubs), I am rather fanatical about publications and your friend has done a fantastic job putting this together and I am sharing it with the 3 couples sailing with me that I met here at CC.

  4. Thank you, Greg, for all the links. I shall look at all of them because half the fun of the trip is in the Research.

Marines are the Nicest, most gentlemanly people in the whole world. When I had Guard Duty on Coronado Island (doing my annual 2 weeks active duty), I picked the tallest, blackest Marine to be my partner.

I, too, was "Just a Reservist." (A No-No to say that!)

Aviation Maintenance Administrationman First Class, we kept the Logs & Records on the aircraft maintenance (working with the Supply Department). I was in RESPATWINGSPAT at Coronado and Point Mugu, where I retired. That was a good extra job while working at Lockheed.

    Your trip sounds very exciting.

After 37 Princess Cruises, I have moved up to the Crystal Symphony, (7 days) sailing from Dover on 17 August, 2 ports in Wales, 2 ports in Scotland, Waterford, Guernsey, Liverpool, and disembarking in Dublin to stay for 7 days to travel by bus & train in Ireland. I would really appreciate your sending me your research:

  5. We have 2pre-cruise days in London prior to our cruise. I believe my electronics (cells, iPads) will work on the ship, but will they work in the hotel in London? If we need to purchase a converter any thoughts on where to purchase one? This is our first time out of the US and thoughts/suggestions from experienced travelers would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a Piece of Fruit, my 13-inch Apple Laptop worked in my London apartment without a converter; however, I needed an adapter for the round-holed plugs. My AirBnB Host gave me one.

  6. Toilet seat covers. I think it's a CA thing.

Yes, it may well be a California thing (or is that Canada???)

Don't buy any. Just grab them from the aircraft and put into your carryon. Don't forget the heavy-duty cleaning of that filthy tray table you will be eating on. I always clean my hotel & cabin phones, TV remotes, etc. with the wipes from my Daughter's dental office. ;)

  7. I will be in Oban from 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday 23 August. Maybe you will be there on the same day?

You were in the US Navy? Thank you for your service and Happy 4th of July! For 20 years, I was an AZ1 (USNR-R).

On Friday 22 August, I will be in Glasgow (Greenock) from 9 AM to 11 PM.

  8. Thanks, GD,

I have started researching those places. I have done the Edinburgh games a couple of years ago. I wanted the Crystal Castle Tour but I am number 41 on the waitlist. Already, 150 pax are signed up for it. It sounds like a lovely little town and should be very relaxing. The Islands interest me also.

I wish you a wonderful visit there.

    Donna

  9. Thank you so much, Steamboats and Notamermaid.

I always learn so much from all your posts. I lived in Pirmasens (south of Kaiserslautern) for 2-1/2 years, 58 years ago.

Cruising the Rhine next year will be very nostalgic on the Viking Var. Thanks for all your help to all the Cruise Critters. ;)

Nearly 200 Evacuated from River Cruise Ship due to 'Leak': (10 AM, EDT) -- A river cruise ship in the eastern Netherlands had to be evacuated early Sunday morning (June 22) after springing a leak late Saturday (June 21). The 360-foot (110 meter) Britannia was carrying 154 passengers and 40 crew when it began to take on water around 10 PM GMT. There were no injuries during the evacuation. A statement on the Zutphen city council website -- the municipality nearest to where the incident occurred -- said passengers were taken to a nightclub before being sheltered overnight in a large event building in Zutphen. The municipality's statement said Britannia has been "drained" and will be "stabilized" tomorrow (June 23). The cause of the leak is not yet known. Dutch emergency services spokesman Robert Spijkerman told AFP that the emergency services team on site had to furiously "pump out water to prevent [the boat] from sinking." Spijkerman said Britannia had "a large hole near the stern," which would be investigated by a team of divers. The cruise ship has been moored in Zutphen on the IJssel River -- an important tributary of the Rhine -- several miles east of Amsterdam. Operated by Nicko Tours, Britannia was making its way from Deventer, The Netherlands, to Cologne, Germany, with a group of mostly German and Austrian passengers when the incident occurred. Cruise Critic has contacted the line for further details about the incident and will update this story with any information we receive.

  11. The least expensive I could find on AirBnB is $86 per night. It has a washer & dryer. Look at the great photos. The nice thing about Air BnB is that you can e-mail the Hosts before booking and ask any questions. I have stayed 7 times with Hosts (twice in London, twice in Barcelona, once in Seattle).

  12. Construction is nearing completion on a new Aranui ship in a Chinese shipyard. This Aranui 3 will be replaced by the Aranui 5 (since there were actually two Aranui 2 ships). We anticipate to see the completed ship in operation around July to August 2015. The Aranui 5 will be slightly wider (22 metres) and taller with two more decks (total of 9 decks), additional public spaces, have more suites (31), superior & deluxe staterooms (29) and will hold about 256 passengers (verses the current 200 passengers). It will have a cruising speed of 15 knots with a length of 125 meters, about the same as the Aranui 3, so that it can safely navigate the smaller harbors of the Marquesas Islands. Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the Aranui 5. :D

    http://aranui.ca/itinerary/aranui-5

I want to go in 2016. In 2004, I went to Tahiti on the Tahitian Princess (7 days). I ordered a brochure but I think it is probably for Aranui 3. There is no Aranui 4 because 4 is an unlucky number for the Chinese and Aranui is owned by a Chinese family. ;)

  14. Hi, Rachel,

I forgot to tell you that, besides reading the reviews and looking at the photos, you can also click on the MAP and see exactly the area that the Host's apartments are located. This one is more costly than the one at the airport (on your other thread); however, because it is right in town:

  16. Hi, Dubliners,

In August, I am staying post-cruise in Dublin for 1 week and I am looking at the different companies. Some (like Viator) are only On-Line Booking Agencies and one cannot tell how large or small, good or bad, their sub-contractors are.

I did use http://www.DublinSightseeing.ie to book my Ho-Ho Bus for 14.45 Euros. Is this a good rate? I like the fact that their office is right there in the City Centre and, although I cannot now phone them, I can e-mail with them.

I e-mailed Daytours Unplugged and they were pretty rude.

I am only interested in Bus (Coach) or Rail or Coach+Rail tours for one day because I have already paid for 1 week in an apartment in Dublin.

Thanks for all your suggestions. :D

    Donna I.
