  1. Have you taken the small boat in Endicott Arm? We spent quite a bit of time in the Fords Terror area which was gorgeous and inaccessible to cruise ships. I'll post photos if I can.

  2. Thanks for all of the advice. We managed to stuff everything into 3 suitcases, one carry-on, and each of the girls have a backpack. We each packed one dress for the first formal night, but we are going more casual for the second. When I weighed my bag at check-in, it was 50.5 pounds! I still have miles to go before I learn to travel light. One of my female coworkers was able to spend 2 weeks in Europe with only a carry-on.

  3. I'm also questioning my wisdom in scheduling a flight that leaves at 11:15 given the long security lines! We'll be platinum self assist, and we have TSA pre-check, so I'm crossing my fingers. I also have trip insurance that will kick in if there's a 3 hour ship delay or greater.

Worst case scenario, I reschedule our flights and pay the change fees if we get too close for comfort. Right now, the dreaded red-eye flights are 3 times the cost vs. our current flights, so I'm going to take my chances.

Are cabs plentiful when you debark, or do I need to prearrange a specific company to pick us up?

Thank you all for the advice, and I'll definitely check out the Vietnamese restaurant.

  4. I'm in Virginia and will be going to Seattle and AK for the first time in August. I don't have much advice, but I'm very interested to hear about your trip when you return. These flights from the East Coast are really something...

We're staying at the Hotel Maxwell near the Space Needle and plan on taking public transportation to see the sights for three days prior to our cruise. I'm buying the Seattle City Pass which includes tickets for 5 popular attractions for $74.

I just need to figure out transportation from the airport area to the hotel, and the fastest method to get to the airport after debarkation because we have an 11:10 flight. We'll carry our own luggage off the ship.

  5. Thanks for the ideas, everyone.

On my 7-day cruise in March, I packed shorts outfits for daytime, two swimsuits, a cover-up, 2 sets of workout clothes, one dress, 6 dinner tops, one pair of slacks, one skirt, one pair of jeans, and one pair of capris. My suitcase was 3 lb. overweight by the time I crammed in shoes, hairdryer, toiletries, backpack, etc.

  6. what is your opinion on what is needed to wear for the MDR?

    Main Dining Room(s)

Following is the dress code in the Main Dining Room(s) for both men and women and pertains to children as well:

    Cruise Casual Dress Code

Men: sport slacks, khakis, Jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long) and collared polo shirts

Women: summer dresses, casual skirts, pants, capris, dress shorts, Jeans (no cut-offs) blouses and tops

Not permitted: Cut-off Jeans, men’s sleeveless shirts, tee-shirts, gym or basketball shorts, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suit attire

We'll probably just pack casual shorts (for Seattle days) and jeans with layered tops for our AK trip. We usually wear dresses, dress slacks, or capris to dinner.

  7. We are flying into Seattle 4 days prior to our AK cruise, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how we'll pack enough clothes for 1.5 weeks if we also pack dinner clothing. We might just skip the MDR for this cruise since my young-adult daughters aren't nuts about dressing up for dinner anyway.

Can someone give me an idea of what is served on the Lido dinner buffet? Are the MDR soups/appetizers/desserts served? We usually love the MDR appetizers, and we don't like the Lido desserts at lunch. Are the Lido main dish choices similar to the MDR dinners?

  8. We accepted the replacement excursion to Iberostar two weeks ago. The pool area was very nice and had a swim up bar. The food was tasty and there was a large selection. The beach was just OK. There is only a small area available for swimming (due to a coral reef underfoot) and there was lots of seaweed floating around.

I have to agree with other posters that Puerto Plata beaches are disappointing in comparison to Punta Cana.

  9. From the website:

    Tour Operations

Shore Excursion detail questions (excluding Faster to the Fun inquiries)

    Telephone calls not accepted

Travel agents and guests may send an email to shoreexcursions@carnival.com. The email should include:

In subject line: Include ship name and sail date

In body of email: Include specific information such as port name and exact shore excursion name

    Email response within 48-72 hours

  10. Last Saturday, someone attempted to have $700 of Carnival gift cards applied to their account at Port Canaveral prior to boarding the Valor. Somehow their cards were applied to my account. I discovered the $700 credit on the second day of the cruise when my Amber Cove excursion was cancelled. When I went to guest services to report the error, they were unable to remove the credit and has to wait for corporate accounting to take care of it. They had no way to determine who was missing the credit since the transaction was done in the port vs. on the ship. I hope that the money found its way to the correct owners.
