  1. OP - I'm sure it will be fine. Your attitude seems wonderful and that's the most important thing. Worst case scenario you have a bad roommate. Unless you both get quarantined to the room that's not the end of the world. Lol. Better case scenario - you make a new friend and possibly have a cruise buddy for the future.

  2. I was on a cruise some years ago and I was taking the stairs. On my way up I passed two couples dressed in suits and dresses waiting to enter a venue. As I rounded the curve to continue up the stairs one of the husbands, never leaving the conversation, hiked one hip up in the air and passed gas. It was loud and not one of those people acted like that just happened. I shook my head and continued on.

  3. I've sailed on all three. All three cruises were very enjoyable. I loved the size of the Gem. On the larger ships I always feel like I'm missing something and frequently get home post cruise thinking "Dang. I meant to do X and never got around to it." I likely miss things on the smaller ships too but at least I don't feel like it. I passed on getting a spa pass on Escape because I felt that the spa on Gem was much better. Enjoy your cruise.

  4. I originally posted this on the insurance board but there isn't much traffic over there.

I am less than 3 weeks from my sail date. My neighbor had a fire and I have significant property damage. With all of the hoops one must jump through dealing with claims adjusters, contractors and schedules it is completely up in the air as to whether I will be able to make my cruise or not.

This made me wonder what totally unexpected life events may have caused others to miss their cruise. Insurance is not a concern as there is plenty of owner's coverage, renter's coverage as well as travel insurance in place so I'm not looking for all of those "this is why you need insurance" posts. Maybe I'm selfish but I'm kind of hoping for something so ridiculous and unforeseen that i don't mind so much that my house is in a shambles.

So, what crazy, unpredictable thing happened to cause you to miss (or come close to missing) your cruise?

  5. I agree that this was a lot of work but at least there was some reward at the end. How often do we work really hard and feel as if we have absolutely nothing to show for it? I'm all for whatever travel hacks I can use to save. I use hotel branded credit cards, airline branded credit cards, and cash back credit cards that have the occasional promos that allow you to save on airlines, hotels, cruises, etc. Free uber ride? I'll take it. Discount on airport parking through Groupon? I'll take that too. Every bit helps. I just recently got bonus airline miles that will cover my flights for the next 2-3 trips.

(Advance apologies if this is not the correct forum. I wasn't sure where else to post)

  7. We booked more than a dozen cheap last minute cruises and don't care much about the bedroom. As long as we can do a cruise for under 2,000 door to door I will sleep in a broom closet if need be.

This. I've got my share of issues but cruise stateroom snob is not one of them. Over the years I've never had a bad room (even guarantees) although once or twice my neighbors were less than desirable but what control do you have over that? I usually set a budget first and then try to make everything else fit. Heck, I might be willing to bus tables or clean a few staterooms for a discount on my next cruise.

  8. I have always managed to benefit from price drops, even after final payment. It's usually as simple as asking. All they can do is say no and I would be totally prepared to accept a no but so far I haven't had to.

BTW I monitor prices on just about any purchase I make where an adjustment might be possible. I price match in stores and take advantage of price protection offered by my credit cards. I don't obsess but if I think about it, I check.

  9. On Epic I have booked studios as far aft as I can get. These rooms are pretty convenient for getting to the stairs and elevator and makes locating your room pretty simple. Plus there are only a few studios - maybe a dozen or so - in this hall so it's super quiet. It is quite a hike to the lounge but I consider that a plus. The more walking the better.
