    Note how much of decks 2 and 1 in the section between the blister tank and sponson S4 has been removed and you can actually see the inner side of the port side sponsons through what is left of deck 2.

     

    Also notice from the discolored part of the starboard sponsons how much they have emerged from the weight removed.

  2. Actually the one at Giglio is not Micoperi 30. That one was the humongous floating crane ship that was used to unload and place some of the sponsons. The one visible in the Giglio webcam is a relatively small barge. Perhaps still doing some cleanup of the botton, removing the cement bags. If I recall correctly they put more than 20,000 bags down there.

Hm, the hull is full of water everywhere below present waterline just above deck #0 and cannot be pumped out for obvious reasons = multiple hull structural leakages due to initial contact port side/bilge aft, capsize (starboard side fwd/aft), sinking and not to forget parbuckling (starboard bilge fwd/aft) and 25 open watertight doors in all bulkheads. The only reason why the wreck is floating is the external sponsons providing buoyancy.

     

    Only way to remove the sponsons is to provide permanent buoyancy inside the damaged, water filled hull. And how to do the latter? Pump out intact hull compartments? Not so easy with the watertight doors open. Intact double bottom tanks? Then you must get the water out and air in through air pipes and ballast pump pipe connections. Etc, etc.

     

    Decks A, B and C are full of rotten crew accommodation fwd of the engine rooms.

     

    Personally I think it is not possible to create the internal buoyancy, so easiest solution is to tow out what remains of the water filled wreck/empty sponsons and sink it all outside Genoa, e.g. adjacent to T/T Haven. icon7.gif

     

    Sink it? ROFLAMO....Just got my morning laugh for the day. :D

  4. Yes, I write about cruise ships and space ships and associated safety matters. Landing a space ship is not possible. Just read the Warning introduction of my web page about the Costa Concordia re-cycling.

     

    The poor Costa Concordia Master didn't kill anybody on the ship or didn't sink the ship himself, when he was fooling around with the Moldovan dancer on the night January 13, 2012.

     

    The ship sank January 14 due to progressive flooding through open, illegal watertight doors and then people still aboard drowned. Abandon ship was not complete as there was not sufficient crew aboard to launch all lifesaving appliances. Cruise ship safety at sea is very poor because the shipowner ashore is not responsible for anything aboard.:eek:

     

    BTW, the earth is round. :D

    Please quote me correctly: "No humans have ever been in space"! I laugh all the time at people believing otherwise.

    And that a Master of a cruise ship looks after everything incl. cleaning the toilets of all cabins. And that the shipowner is responsible of nothing.

  6. The re-cycling of the Costa Concordia wreck/ship is way behind schedule but soon deck #0 will be above water and then the drugs/cocaine apparently loaded there can be recovered.

    The wreck/ship is still of course full of water and only kept afloat by the external sponsons providing the necessary buoyancy.

     

    In order to proceed to the next step - move the wreck/ship into drydock - you must remove all external sponson AND provide equivalent buoyancy inside the hull (without sponsons). It will not be easy.

     

    I have a distinct feeling the project will fail - the wreck/ship breaks into three pieces? - but we will see.

     

    In the meantime Master has appealed the judgement. He doesn't want to go to jail 16 years for a stupid accident. http://heiwaco.com/news8.htm

     

    And, the bad news, monster big cruise ship safety at sea is worse than ever. A single Master cannot be responsible for everything on a cruise vessel with >5000 passengers and >1200 staff/crew, when the shipowner is not really interested in safety. The next incident will be worse.

     

    Better to cruise on small, cosy cruise ships with a friendly crew.

  7. Got lucky today and catched a glimpse of a big chunk from decks 5 and 6 forward being lifted out of the wreck in the webcam. I was able to capture a few images but just as the crane barge rotated to move out someone else started moving the camera and I lost sight of the crane. By the time I was able to regain control for just enough time the barge had moved out and the large piece lowered out of sight already.

     

    Ship must be pretty light now. Once they complete sealing off the inner whole openings they should begin removing more of the sponsons.

  8. Ken, seems like it will take as long to remove the platforms as it did to build them. ;)

     

    Been following the latest ship tragedy. Terrible that all on board were lost.

    Hope the CG can find the black box to get some answers.

     

    It sure does. I hesitate to see the final bill when all the clean-up and the salvaging of the Costa Concordia is completed.

  9. Work continues on removing anchor blocks.

     

    After removal of the 6 platforms that made up the false bottom of which was rotated during the Costa Concordia parbuckling waters of Giglio, go ahead shipped restore operations of the seabed of Punta Gabbianara through the removal of 11 anchor blocks ( restraints of the wreck). To date they have been removed anchor blocks number 3, 4.

     

    The anchor blocks, explain Micoperi from the yard, they are cut with the machine diamond wire below the base of the structure, thus allowing the lifting in one piece of the entire anchor block. Once removed, the divers proceed to manually remove the residual cement and sandbags were at the bottom under the base of the structure. This material was placed to enable sealing the anchor block, during the step of filling the cement inside.

     

    "We are in line with the time schedule - said the Mayor Ortelli - but the most delicate phase will be the next and last one that involves the removal of sediments. All this is expected to close in early 2016, tentatively by the end of February. "

  10. Just to complicate things further, it may be that they've cut the top sections of certain sponsons off. If you look at the following from around 1min 20secs there is a barge moored up to the other side of CC's pier/wall with what looks like sections of sponsons? (Could be completely wrong!):

     

     

    Great find. I think you are correct, it appears they did in fact cut the tops sections off of the port side sponsons.
