  1. Are you saying that every restaurants in the US adds 15% to the bill? Where do you live in the US? The only time I have seen the added gratuities is when the group is over X number of people. 15% is where we start on the tip and that is adjusted up or down accordingly. There was been times I left $0 tips because the service warranted it so.

We are from the US and we tip. However, I do not feel it is my place to tell a person s/he should tip because it is rude if they do not. If they are comfortable to not tip, because that is their custom, then so be it.

I am also from the US, and I think what she is trying to say, when you go into a restaurant in the US, although it is not "mandatory" (borderline, because it is almost mandatory) but definitely expect by wait staff in restaurants. It is so expected, that when you receive your bill, on the bill you will see suggested percentages for tipping in the ranges of 13%-25%. The typical shift for a waiter/waitress in a restaurant is 8 to 10 hours, they are on the feet running around to serve you, more so on these cruise ships the shifts are longer and they work 7 days a week. Do you feel they are not deserving of the "Daily Service Charge"? As the other poster said, this implies that you receive poor service, which is not the truth from the reviews I have read "just saying".

  2. Well, who says Friday the 13th is unlucky. We're considering giving Seaside a try and I came over to find some reviews. And I hit the motherlode. maureen - I know you said you are black member. Wait....that did NOT sound right. Sorry, black CARD. What's your level on Royal? We're D+ so I'm hoping for a good level on MSC.

    Carry on.....

LOLOLOLO!!!!! LMFAO!!!! This group is amazing !!! :'):'):'):')

  3. Maureen, when Owen is with us we go to Playa Mia. It’s great for a ten year old. We it’s just mom and dad we go to Nachi Cocum. Looks like it was a great day.

We've been to Nachi Cocom and its a lot of fun for the adults. Didn't see to many kids there last year. But this time, for our MSC cruise we are heading to Mr. Sanchos....its right next door. Does anyone know how long is the drive from where MSC docks to Mr. Sanchos ?? We're taking a taxi on our own, and need to make sure we have enough time back and forth. :D

  4. One of the best reviews I’ve read ! Thanks for sharing your play-by-play cruise with us. Really appreciate all the time it takes to organize photos and ideas for us to follow along. We’ll be on Seaside in a few more weeks. Until then, we’ll be enjoying the ship thru you[emoji16][emoji16]

  5. A shout out to various people, staff, and experiences that I had the pleasure of meeting, or over hearing on the 3/3 -3/10 MSC Seaside. A cruise is what you make it. NOT the ship, despite its size and elegance; NOT the itinerary, no matter how exotic NOR the different ports of call. It is the people we meet, the interactions we have, and the enjoyment of cruising in general. That is what we remember.

Staff: Since I did not receive a MSC cruise survey I decide to give credit where credit is due to the following staff of the MSC Seaside:

Krishna (Junior Butler) YC. Thank you for the amazing job you did on our cabin. I don’t believe I have ever had a cabin cleaned so fast and with such precision. From continually stocking my favorite beer or my wife’s favorite rum, to the meticulous care of each and every nook and cranny of that room, your efforts were so appreciated.

Estefania (Dining Hostess) YC It was hard to believe this was your first cruise. My wife and I commented that your professionalism, friendly smile and warm greeting put the YC Dining hostess on the Divina on notice. WOW the way you hustled and took care of even our tiniest request was so appreciated. You are one of the people we will remember as making this cruise our favorite.

Sofyanto (Wait staff) YC Thank you for everything, from the suggestions to the “making exceptions” you made us feel like royalty.

Should anyone reading this post decide to cruise on the Seaside YC. I would recommend getting to know these individuals as they contributed to a wonderful experience for my wife and me.

    People:

All the people we were fortunate to meet at the Cruise Critic Meet and Mingle. MSC takes the Cruise Critic posters opinions very seriously. The greeting by the officers, the cocktails, the cake and the photo were just over the top. It makes me glad that MSC considers the thoughts and views of the patrons very important. And a special shout out to MonteralMommy5 who I know reads these boards. You and your husbands charm and friendliness was so nice and it was a pleasure discussing, MSC, raising our children and the cruise experience as a whole. Secondly to Mary and Gary from Hot Springs, Arkansas who were kind enough to share their wit and wisdom with us.

    Overheard/ seen/ experienced:

I don’t ease drop and far be it to get involved in somebody's conversation but some of things I heard and witnessed on board made this cruise unlike any other.

Worst T Shirt Award: To the gentleman next to me at our Friday dinner in the YC which read “Costa Concordia 100 meter swim team”. Sir your attempt at humor was lost on those of us who enjoy the relaxation of cruising. It was a travesty of errors and a great loss.

Most rude patron: To the woman from Pittsburgh who during our second dinner on board in the YC simply yelled very loudly at a passing waiter “HEY YOU…YA YOU!!! HAVE THE WINE GIRL BRING ME SOME MORE WINE !!!”

Best lost in translation: To the Italian gentleman from Milan who upon inquiring how tender the pork chops were from a gentleman who appeared by his accent to be from the Deep South. Simply looked at his wife confused. When she asked him if that gentleman was an American, he replied in exceptional English “I don’t know but his English was terrible”.

Second best lost in translation: To the Canadian gentleman in the Toronto Mapleleafs T shirt who inquired about the watch a woman from Germany had just purchased. The look on your face was priceless Sir when the reply from her husband was “I am sorry Sir but my wife does not speak Canadian only French and English”

Best one liner: Walking past the elevator during our first night on board; “You know Emily you don’t have to see the WHOLE ship in one night”

I hope you enjoyed my feeble attempt a bit of humor.

This was such a wonderful shout out. Aside from the humor, you've given us tons of great stuff to look forward to when we sail Yacht club in a few more weeks.!! Awesome contribution.:D:D

34:23 is part of the conversation that people always remember...

OMG!! how sad...and unfortunate. Is it written in the captain's job description that he absolutely MUST stay on board in the event of a tragedy? If so, then why didn't Schettino know this?? smh...how did I miss this story 6 years ago??:(:(

  7. Costa Concordia cruise ship was wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio in Italy on 13 January 2012 due to a collision with a submerged rock; the ship capsized hours later which resulted in the death of 32 people.

OMG!!!! :o:o that's terrible..!! :(:( Well, then - YES - that t-shirt was definitely in terrible taste.

  8. Concordia t-shirt? really? what kind of idiot make it and would wear it? sick

Sorry....but what is the reference to the "concordia t-shirt" all about.:rolleyes: Should I google it? Never heard of this before and not sure what i means?? (...sorry...don't mean to derail...:()

  9. It states:

The company will introduce exceptional main dishes and tapas developed by Chef Freixa across the fleet

It remains to be seen whether this will improve the offerings on MSC. The current menus were 'designed' by a Michelin-starred chef, too.

I would be very happy to see an overhaul of the menus. Cruising 4 times a year for the last few years on MSC, I'm tired of seeing basically the same menus over and over.

I wonder how heavy the Spanish influence will be, though, apart from the introduction of tapas.

As part of the Elegant Night celebrations, guests in the main restaurants on MSC ships will be able to enjoy Freixa’s signature dish, a mouth-watering Duck Royal with cream of foie gras and onions.

Guests in MSC's Yacht Club will be treated to a Glazed Pluma of Iberian pork with sautéed vegetables or for a lighter bite, along with tapas.

The last sentence omits the item "for a lighter bite".

We'll be YC on Splendida in April. It'll be interesting to see if the menu is, indeed, introduced next month:

... starting this April, according to a press release.

Yup - you are totally right about that last sentence. I went back and re-read the article. Hmmm - Now I'm getting curious as to what those "lighter bite" items will be ?? :o:o

  10. Mama ... An interesting report of your cruise, because we had a late afternoon flight after the Xmas cruise and had been chasing around for our final photos and waiting for certain ones to be printed by Bogdan the assistant manager of the photo shop, we decided to go to the Venchi area sit down with a few drinks and relax until around 10pm.

When we finally decided to leave there were no queues apart from the lines in the customs hall which moved reasonably quick.

My advice if you sail MSC again is to do what we did.

LOL....I'm guessing you mean 10 AM !!! ;p;p;p We're definitely going to do this. Our flight is not until 2PM, late afternoon! Thanks for the tip !

    • As it is, we are not ruling out MSC for future cruises. It was a comfortable way to travel to Ocho Rios, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Grand Cayman, and the experiences we had at those ports were unforgettable...

Curious to know if this was the original itinerary when you booked? We are also sailing SAT - SAT and our itinerary includes Nassau, and not Costa Maya. Are they switching OUT the Nassau, Bahamas stop???
