  1. Pre-Cruise Day Continued:

One last picture of hubby and I not knowing that the train ahead of us had derailed.

    enhance

I want to apologize for the different font sizes and crazy misspelled words. I hope that the next chapter will be laid out a little better. Again, I haven't done this since 2014, and I'm just a little rusty.

    Cruise Day!!!!!!!!!!!

Cruise day has finally arrived, and I couldn't be happier. I was up early and woke everyone up around 7:30 am. They were not happy with me, but it was good to get started. I mentioned that we made it to our hotel after 1:00 am that morning, but I never mentioned the hotel that we stayed at.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Metairire. I had wanted to stay in New Orleans, but with the Saints playing a home game, and all the other activities/events going on, the hotels were just too expensive. For example, some hotels were charging over $400 for one night. I knew in advance that I was going to pay about $200 for the night, but I can't see myself paying anything over that amount. Sorry I don't have pictures of the Holiday Inn, but I will say that the staff was wonderful. Since we had gotten in so late, my daughter had mentioned that she was hungry, and the clerk at the desk allowed her to go into the little snack room and take anything she wanted to eat for free. She was respectful and only took two things, but the clerk told her to go back and take another snack. The rooms were the typical Holiday Inn rooms, just small and comfortable. We had two queen beds in our room, and four people for the one night, but it worked out just fine.

    Now on to Embarkation:

We had breakfast at the resturant in hotel, and then went back to our rooms to finish packing and call for transportation. I had been referred by the hotel to contact a guy who has a shuttle bus and would come and pick us up, and take us to the port. I had talked with him, and then the night before sent him a text message that we had a check in time at the port between 12:00 - 12:30 pm. We got back downstairs that morning, and Brian was there waiting with his 15 passenger shuttle bus.

Now let me tell you I am grateful that Brian was there to pick us up, but I had a big concern with his shuttle. Once we got on board, and he started it up, it sounded like it was really struggling. However, we made it to the port and he charged $8.00 per person, which was so much better than a cab.

When we got off the shuttle, I was really surprised to see so many people lined up waiting to get inside. My heart just dropped as I thought we would have to wait for quite a while in that same line. The porter came over, when he saw us getting off the shuttle and took our bags. We tipped him $2.00 per bag, and then we heard an announcement that instructed those with a check in time of 12:00 - 12:30, please proceed to line B (or something like that)., yay, we didn't have to get into that long line. We showed our boarding passes and passports, and went right into the terminal. Once inside, they saw my husband with his walker, and took us aside, and directed us to the elevator. My daughter and two friends were directed to go up the escalator, and we would meet them upstairs. Folks, I'm not lying when I tell you that from the time we were dropped off and entered the terminal, it took us about 30 minutes and we were on the ship. Not one time did we have a chance to sit down, it went that smoothly. The last time hubby and I left from New Orleans was a living nightmare, and I swore I would never leave from that port again. I had requested special assistance (wheel chair) for hubby, and all they did was point us to go sit down. No one ever came over to get us, and we sat there for about 20 minutes before I got up and asked someone for help. This time around, I have to say that Carnival and the Port of New Orleans got there stuff together. You are not allowed into the terminal unless it was your chosen time to do so. There were plenty of Carnival employee's around to direct you where to go, and everyone was so nice and pleasant. I'm telling you, it was a big change from the last time, and no confusion, no hassles, no people pushing and shoving. I even went on John Healds Facebook and told him how great the embarkation was. That man gets so many darn complaints that I felt it was necessary to let him know how well everything went. Again it took us 30 minutes or less to get on board, I didn't even have time to take our "official" on vacation picture.

I can't get over how murky the Mississippi river is.

    enhance

We had the Safety drill around 3:00 or 3:30, and it was over in about 20 minutes. John and I went back to our cabin and started unpacking, and cleaning the room. I know that people are always asking me why I clean the room even after the cabin stewards clean it, but it's something I have always done. I have a can of Lysol, and Lysol wipes, and I start in the bathroom (with gloves that I bring), and wipe everything down. I clean the counters, the phone, the door handles, drawer pulls, everything. I spray the pillows, blankets, and then we go back out on deck and wait until the smell goes away, but at least I know I've done my job (OCD at it's finest).

I'm closing out for now, as it's time for me to get dinner, and do all that stuff. I'll pick up tomorrow for Day 2.

    Thanks for following.

  2. I think I finally got the pictures together. I had to use Shutterfly, and now hopefully this will work.

  3. It's interesting about your experience with Enterprise. My DH and I were just talking about their commercial, "Enterprise will pick you Up". In all the times we have used Enterprise, they have NEVER picked us up. That wasn't poor service you received at Enterprise....it was Non-Existing! What a shame.

Glad to hear you made it to New Orleans....what a long day!

Yeah I was not very happy with them, and I will never refer them to anyone. I tell you that Saturday when we left Huntsville, until we got to New Orleans, we traveled for 16 hours total. It was a long day that's for sure!

  4. Okay, I'm still having trouble uploading the pictures, but someone did contact me, and will help me out later on. In the meantime, I'm going to go ahead and get started with this, so I don't get behind.

    Pre-Pre-Cruise Day

I don't know about you, but I have to take at least one day off before we leave on vacation. The day was booked with haircut appointments, nail appointments, picking up the rental car, going to the bank to get cash, and just last minute running around. We had no major problems that day, but it was the longest day ever. We had left the house early that morning around 9:00 am, and being honest, didn't get back home until after 6:00 pm.

My sister came over later that night so she could get our house key, the garage door opener, and also the code for the alarm. Isn't it so reassuring to know that there is someone you can trust to keep an eye on your home while you're away. Thank goodness for family and friends you can trust, right. After all the running around, getting everything done before leaving the next day, the car was packed with our checked bags, and we were finally ready to hit the bed. Tomorrow is a big day, and we can't wait to get started. Our vacation has finally begun!

    Pre-Cruise Day (Saturday, October 28th, 2017)

I woke up on our travel day to the house phone ringing at 5:45 am. It was my sister calling to wish us safe travels for us the day. Now folks, I love my sister very much, but who in the "bleepers" calls to wish us safe travels at 5:45 am???? Oh well, I'm up and ready to get going. My plan was to get on the road by 7:00 am, so to be honest, I couldn't be mad at her, because she woke me up at a good time (just don't tell her that).

After getting the family up and going, we finished packing the car, and pulled out of the driveway at 6:30 - 6:40 am. But, we had to turn around as my daughter thought she had left something at home. Okay, let's try this again...but then I had to turn around yet again, as this time I thought I had left something behind. Isn't that the way it goes, you always think that you are leaving something behind, or that you left an appliance on. Believe it or not, we finally get on the road, and it's after 7:00, so it wasn't too bad. Our first stop was at Starbucks for my daughters iced coffee. I cannot drink Starbucks coffee, it's just too strong for me. So the next stop we made was for coffee at Panera Bread, I have GOT to have my coffee in morning, or I'm just not a happy person. Once everyone had coffee, we were on our way to Birmingham.

Now let me give you an idea of what our travel plans were for the day. Because are leaving from the Port of New Orleans, we decided to rent a car in Huntsville, AL and drive to Birmingham. Then once we get to Birmingham, we would hop on the train and ride into New Orleans. Easy as pie, right???? We are scheduled to leave Birmingham at 12:08 pm, and arrive in New Orleans at 7:35 pm, which really isn't a bad ride. We had done it before in 2014, and had an awesome ride. However, this time...well, just continue to read to find out what happened.

Our ride to Birmingham was really uneventful except it was cold and rainy. I don't know about you, but I hate driving in the rain. The crazy speeding drivers were out that day, so I had to make sure I was watching out for everyone else driving, and myself as well. When we got to Warrior, AL (on the out skirts of Birmingham), I decided to stop at Cracker Barrell since we had only had coffee, and needed something to eat. We were seated right away, and had a good breakfast, and back on the road to Birmingham within the hour. When we got into Birmingham, we found a Publix grocery store, and stopped to pick up snacks, water, and made to order sandwiches. Let me tell you this, if you want a good sandwich (made to order), Publix is the place to go. The sandwiches are about $7.00 plus change, and they are soooooooo good. Once we finished at the store, we were on our way to Enterprise to drop off the car, and here is where our trouble begins. I think I had mentioned earlier that I am very OCD, I mean when it comes to planning, I research, I make calls, I talk to people that have been to the places that we may be going so that I can plan everything out for us. So with Enterprise, I had done the same thing. I called months before and asked if this particular location was close to the Amtrak station, so they could take us back. Unfortunately, I was given the wrong information, so when we dropped off the car, I was told that they wouldn't be taking us to the station. So now I'm thinking how in the world am I going to get us all in a taxi to the train station. So I asked the clerk at Enterprise if she could call a cab for us and ask for a large car, and she said "I don't know of any cabs in the area". Now mind you, she works at a rental agency where people get dropped off, and I'm sure some people have requested cabs. Wouldn't it just be something you would think they would have handy for their customers, I'm just saying! So now, my daughter and I are trying to find a cab company on our phones. She lucks out and calls for a cab and tells them, we are tall people, and have 3 large suitcases with 3 carry on bags. Please send a van or a SUV. What do they send...a regular sedan car, which we had to send on it's way. Now I'm getting a little nervous as I don't want us to be late and miss our train. So I decided to try Uber. I have heard good things, and bad things about Uber, but what the heck, let's give it a try. Within 15 minutes, the guy shows up in a large van, and gets out to help us load our luggage. I asked him if he knew where the Amtrak station was, and he said "yes, it's less than 5 minutes from here". Wait, what...less than 5 minutes from the Enterprise location, and they wouldn't take us to the train station (urrrrrrrrrgh). We finally get to the station, and he helps us unload the car, and and takes us into the station. Now one thing I failed to mention is that my husband just started using a walker, because he's very unbalanced. The Uber driver took his time helping us with our luggage, and also helping with my husband. I tried to give him a nice tip, which he refused, and just told us to relax and have a wonderful time. He really made our day, and I truly appreciated what he did. He did more for us than Enterperise did.

Once at the station, we were able to find seats together, and within 10 minutes they announced it was time to check our bags. So bags are checked, we are finally seated at the train station, and we actually meet up with other people who are going on the cruise with us. We chatted for a while, and then realized it was after 12:00 pm, and we didn't have any announcements about our train. 5 - 10 minutes later, my daughter saw a sign on posted where you purchase train tickets that the train is running late, and will be arriving at 1:45 pm. Darn, another set back, Oh well, as long as we are at the station, and bags checked, that's fine. We will still make it to New Orleans that night, so it's okay. The train finally shows up after 2:00 pm, and we get on the train. Now I can really relax, because we are New Orleans bound. The train is not to full and we are on our way to New Orleans. My husband and daughter finally fall asleep as it was a crazy morning, and everyone was tired. They wake up after their naps, and we pull out our wonderful lunches, and decide it's time to eat. Now if you haven't ridden on a train, let me tell you it's an experience for sure. There is plenty of leg room, you can recline in your seat, and they even have a leg rest that lifts up. You can walk back in forth, stretch your legs, and the bathrooms are large (not small compartments like on the plane). There is even a dining car where you can purchase meals, and a lounge car for drinks, sandwiches, and candy. It's really a relaxing ride, and very comfortable. We are now in Mississippi, and coming up to Hattiesburg, MS, where the train comes to a full stop. No worries, maybe someone is getting off, but we noticed that we are not stopped at the station, so what gives. After 2-1/2 hours we were told that a freight train ahead of us had derailed, yup a train that had 5 cars derail, and was in our way. Really, really, this is what happens to us as we are trying to get to New Orleans for our trip. Amtrak really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and at ease. They passed out free water, and also snacks. They finally made an annoucement that they were going to back up our train, and then transfer over to another track and try to inch by the derailed train. We later found out that it we made it by with only a few inches to spare. Never found out how the cars derailed, but I'm so thankful that it wasn't the passenger train (us). If you believe in God like I do, I believe that our train was late to keep us from derailing. Whatever the reason, I'm grateful and blessed that we were all okay, and that no one on the derailed train was hurt either.

We finally made it into New Orleans maybe around 11:30 pm or later. I contacted the guy I had made arrangements with for transporation, and he showed up 30 minutes later. Apparently New Orleans had a lot going on including a home game. Plus they had the Vodoo Festival, and some other activities, so he was running a little late. The other two friends that we were meeting at the hotel were scheduled to get in later than we were, had already made it to the hotel, and was waiting up for us. We arrived at the hotel, and checked in with no problems. I want to say that it was after 1:00 am, when we finally got to our room. We were tired, cold, and ready for bed.

    Pros

Uber is great to use in Birmingham. The Uber driver told us that people don't really use cabs there any more, so it's just a note in case you are in the Birmingham area and need a ride.

The Amtrak folks were pretty nice about checking our bags, helping my husband on and off the train.

    Cons

I will never use the Enterprise on 4th Ave South in Birmingham. They were not helpful, wanted me to drive to the other location, so the employees there could take us to the train station. I am not familiar with Birmingham, and didn't want to drive there myself. They also didn't have phone numbers for cabs, and was just not pleasant. I do plan on calling their corporate office. Not to yell or scream, but make a suggestion on how important customer service is. I just felt that they could have handled the situation a little better, that's all.

So that's it for the pre-cruise day. I'll pick up later tonight or tomorrow and hopefully have pictures to upload. Feel free to ask questions.

  5. Hello everyone, my family and I are just back from our seven day cruise on the beautiful Carnival Dream. When I say we are just back, we just walked in the house about two hours ago! On this trip was myself (Carol - 60), my hubby (John - 86), my daughter (Charmaine - 36), and friends (Michelle - 40/Cynthia - 63).

To be honest, I had written a review on the Dream, when hubby and I went in October of 2014. I swore after that cruise that I would never, ever, set foot in New Orleans again, after the mass confusion we experienced trying to get on the ship. But, as the saying goes..."never say never", right?

This will be a long review with plenty of pictures, copies of the Fun Times, and please be sure to ask questions along the way. I also would like to add to please be patient with me as this is only review #2 for me, and I am going to try and write the review each day. I am very detailed, (it's the "OCD" side of me), and I try to make it easy to ready and follow:

    1st - Pre-Pre Cruise Day

    2nd - Pre-Cruise Day

    3rd - Cruise

    4th - Post-Cruise

So without further ado, I would like to welcome you to my review/vlog, or whatever you want to call it. Pre-Pre-Cruise Day starts tomorrow.

  6. Everyone, I have two questions that hopefully you can help me with. The family and I are going on the Carnival Dream in October so:

    1. This is the first time that I've purchased the social media package, and how does it work? When do I get the password, and what social media apps am I able to use this on? I've heard that sometimes you can use it for Snap Chap and Facebook, but then again, sometimes it doesn't work.

    2. Is the Carnival Hub available on the Dream, and if so, what all can you do with the hub app? When do I pay for the Carnival Hub, how does the messaging work with it, and can you give me your thoughts and opinions about the Hub app as well?

    Thanks everyone.

  7. Let me preface this next installment by saying that we have been to Cozumel many times, and these days, my only real mission there is to pick up my Retin-A, because I have been obsessed with anti-aging and preventing wrinkles since I was basically a fetus. Seriously, I would tug on my umbilical cord, and my mom would send down some Oil of Olay. So that's literally all we did this time. We got off the ship, got some Retin-A, and got back on. Not even one picture was taken. So, just to be able to have something to post for this day, I'm going to share some pics from some of our previous visits. So, please join me for an "alternative day" in Cozumel. (I knew Kellyanne would make another appearance in this review, that sneaky trick.):

    Thursday, March 3rd, 2017

Thankfully, I woke up feeling better than I had the night before, so I decided to have a healthy breakfast. (Only 2 FunShips instead of 3.) We headed off the ship, and made the 7.5 mile trek down the pier into the port area. The water in Cozumel is just beautiful:

    20170302_112930_zps5qjhpph8.jpg

On this alternative day, we had lots of things planned. First, we were going to Nachi Cocom, so we made our way to the taxi area. Here's a pic of the shopping area we passed through on the way:

    20140411_082641_zps2rwxwr6h.jpg

I think you've learned by now that the only time C and I are religious is when we are in a taxi in a foreign country. We will pray to anything. Zeus. Buddha. The Flying Spaghetti Monster. Fabio. Anybody, just let us get to our destination in one piece. When we arrived at Nachi on this alternative day, we kissed the ground, thankful that we didn't end up actually inside of the ambulance that we had tail-gated the entire way. (Yes, that really did happen on a previous trip.) We paid our balance, and were led to our palapa:

    20140411_084802_zpsmeyj7sfx.jpg

We decided to look around a little bit. This is looking down the beach toward Mr. Sancho's:

    20140411_095103_zps5evailrw.jpg

Here's the hammock area, where you can lose all of your dignity as you try to get in or out of one of these things after you've taken advantage of the open bar:

    20140411_095807_zpsi4xtvn4u.jpg

Here's the pool, which although you can't see in this pic, also has a swim-up bar. So basically, this is where you have a chance to earn a prestigious Darwin Award after you drown by trying to drunkenly swim up to get your 13th Miami Vice:

    20140411_102228_zpsdlh90pvc.jpg

    To be continued.......

I know I"m late reading this since you wrote your review in April, and I'm finally reading this in August. However, I have to tell you that you need to give us readers warnings. For example...warning, do NOT read at work, failure to do so will result in loud laughter, and food and/or water coming out of your nose and mouth. I have NEVER laughed so hard and loud at work before. Love your writing style, and humor. I'm thinking of trying to be like you and get the cheers package, and reach the goal of 15 drinks a day!!!

  8. I don't think you will be able to see the Mississippi river as you go into the gulf as it will be pitch dark. It does take 7 - 8 hours, and you won't be able to see a thing. However, once you start cruising down the Mississippi at 4pm, it is nice to see all the oil rigs and barges. For me, it was amazing to finally be cruising down the Mississippi, the might river that we learned about in school. Have a wonderful time, I'll be doing this cruise again in October 2017.

  9. I have my 14th cruise booked for May 2018 on the Dream and always book online. For my last 4 or 5 cruises from NOLA and Mobile, we've always had to pick a check in time when the cruise was booked. This time that option isn't there that I see. Are they still doing the staggered check ins? I thought they worked well vs how they did it before. Thanks for any help.

As someone else stated, I think it's because your cruise is still a ways out. I am booked on the cruise for October 2017, and I have that option. Keep checking back as your cruise gets closer. By the way, before I made my final payment, that option was there as well.

  10. Answers to questions thus far:

We didn’t try the hooks in the shower, just the bathroomdoor and walls. There is a small clothesline actually in the shower for hangingwet clothes.

We were in cabin 7391, standard balcony, starboard side. Theroom was warm to begin with but we turned the air conditioner way down immediately. The room did cool off. Keep the curtains closed as much as possible and closethe balcony door as quickly as you can to keep the cool air in the room. I’mgenerally hot natured.

Excursions: River Tubing in Jamaica, Captain Marvin’sStingray Swim in Grand Cayman, Mr. Sanchos in Cozumel. I’m going to write areview of each one in the ports of call section. When I do, I’ll provide thelink in this thread.

Over packing: Forget trying to have an outfit for each timeof the day. Mix and match. No one cares nor notices what you have on. When you’repacking and you say, “I might need this.” Then leave whatever it is at home.

You’ll see a wide variety of outfits while on the cruise. Some people like to dress up even during the day. Go for simple and minimal. Beforethe cruise, we bought 2 of the really large suitcases from TJ Maxx. The bigones. We have 2 kids. Both suitcases were packed to the max. Looking back, wecould have packed all the clothes we needed for all of us for the week in oneof the big suitcases. What I’ve read on here many times is so true: Take halfthe clothes and twice the money you think you’ll need.

Women: Bathing suit with cover-up will work from morning tolate afternoon. But bring two so one can be drying (to some extent) while youwear the other. One pair of khaki shorts to pair with four tops will get youthrough the week during the evenings. But bring another pair of shorts thatwill also work with the four tops. If you go to “elegant night”, bring only oneoutfit and use both nights. One sun dress. About 3 tee shirts. No heels.

Guys: Two pairs of quick drying shorts that can double as a swimsuit. Columbia type shorts. About 4 tee shirts. One outfit for “elegant night”.Keen type shoes will work all week. About 3 collared shirts for night time. Maybeone Tommy Bahama type shirt.

You don’t need a fresh outfit for each dinner. The samecasual shorts can be used for every night, just swap out a shirt. Keep itsimple and very casual. Run out of clean clothes? Wash them and start over.

I’ll comment on “elegant night” attire when I address thefood and dining options later.

Note: I saw several people slip while walking down thestairs around the pool areas. Regular flip flops can be super slick on thesteps. Just be careful. Don’t take towels. Take a small backpack for excursionsand stuff for the pool area. We took snorkel gear for the kids to enjoy at thebeaches. Take cheap wire hangers, pop up hamper for dirties. Water-proof casefor your phone to take pictures while on excursions. Wife took one long sleevedtee shirt which she did wear once.

No iron in the room that I saw. Might be a fire hazard.

We were on the Dream in 2014 with a different itinerary, and loved the ship. We loved it so much we are going again in October to the same ports you just came from. We have a balcony on the 8th deck (we always get a balcony when we cruise), and we have 96 days left, and I'm counting down and can't wait. Thanks for your review, it does help me even though we had already been on the ship.

  11. We were on the Dream back in 2015 and they had at that time your pretty standard land based casino games. Buffalo, Quick Hits, Fu Dao Le and lots of 3 reel machines. The casino section of the board might have more info. Good Luck!

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for.

  12. Hi everyone, I have a questions. Does anyone know what slot games are on the Carnival Dream? Or, shall I say, what are some of the most popular slot machines on the Dream. Hubby and I enjoy gambling on sea days, and at night, and when we were on the Dream back in 2014, they had several machines, but none really new. We're going again on the Dream in October, and wanted to know if they have changed out the machines (hopefully).

    Thanks everyone.

  13. Hubby and I took a cruise on the Dream back in early October 2014. Never in my day have I ever seen such unruly kids during both day and night. The kids were spitting on people, saying nasty and rude comments to people they passed, running into senior citizens knocking them down. There were no parents around, or a guardian watching over them, and I refused to deal with it and would leave the area if they were around. Because of that, I refuse to go early October any more. Don't get me wrong, I know kids can be a pain during the whole year, but someone told me that I had actually gone during Fall Break, which I refuse to book a cruise during that time going forward. It's not the fault of Carnival, and you can't expect them to really do anything unless another passenger, crew, or staff is injured. If someone tried to say or do anything, the child is quick to say something to the parent, and then arguments, fights, and someone trying to sue each other starts. It all falls back on parents/guardians, and I hope that people with children will read this and take heed. People with children that teach them to act right around others and be respectful, thank you so much for teaching your children to have manners. I taught my children at a young age, and growing up they knew better. All my husband and I had to do was give them the "look", and they always acted right. There is no real cure or answer to this ongoing problem because again, Carnival really have their hands tied when it comes to other people's children, unless someone is hurt. John Heald cannot be expected to cure this issue, and I just hope that maybe during the time we are going on our upcoming cruise a lot of the kids will be in school. Just sad that this seems to be an ongoing issue.

  14. Not wanting to sound rude, but I am not an animal person, so I would be against people wanting to bring their pets on a ship. Can you imagine what the ship would look like, and smell like, plus the lawsuits...it would be a nightmare. I have nothing against people bringing their service animals on board, but pets, no way! I can see dogs jumping up and down on other passengers, raising their legs on chairs, barking at all hours of the night, dogs snipping at people, or even biting someone. Nope, not something I would want to see on ships, thank God!
