  1. can I ask what kind of tip you left?

We did 5 euros each (so 10 total) - others gave less, but we felt comfortable at 5 each.

On another note, be sure to go to Nyhavn and have ice cream at Vaffelbagaren (on a corner with a big waffle cone outside! [emoji39]) and try to get over to the food market across the bridge next to Nyhavn. We loved Copenhagen!

  2. Agree with the above that itinerary is more important than the ship. With regard to the Stockholm/Nynasham, be mindful that large ships may not end up at Stockholm after all - we picked our Getaway sailing as it was supposedly the last of the season to go to Stockholm (and we wanted to see the archipelago) and only found out when we checked in that NCL changed us to Nynashamn after all. We started in Copenhagen and loved it so would recommend a couple of days there pre-cruise if your itinerary starts there.

  3. There there is a good site (probably several) which offers information on cruises generally - which allows you to specify: by date, region, line, specific ship, length of cruise, etc. -- but the moderators will rap my knuckles if I name it because it can be seen to be a "forbidden-to-mention" travel agent.

Try googling " sites offering information on future cruises" and then ignore suggestions identifying specific cruise lines, and you will find your way to a general source.

Ooops!! Sorry! You were right about the knuckle rapping! (My first!) [emoji854]

  4. I second the VTG site suggestion and use it often to search - under Custom Search, you can include and exclude ports, etc. It's very helpful as a start, and then I go to the particular cruise line websites to search from there.

  5. We were on the NCL Getaway in September and enjoyed it! We had a 2 day St. Petersburg stop which was whirlwind but fine for us, as we had booked a deluxe version shore excursion which included as much as possible with a private company (SPB Tours, but others also offer deluxe versions). Nine nights for the target amount you'd like to spend.

With regard to helpful suggestions, I'd suggest trying to go with a smaller size ship if possible, or check to see what other ships are in SPB port that day. It took some people 2 hours to get off the ship the first day.

Also, FYI, we were supposed to be the last sailing to Stockholm, which is why we booked the date, but at the very last minute, they switched us to Nynashamn. Our issue was supposedly due to "daylight savings hours" and the size of the ship. Docking at Nynashamn gave us the full day, rather than a 5 hour day going directly to Stockholm. We didn't see archipelago but fully understood their reasoning and were fine with the change.

  6. Depending on how long the tour is, and how good the guide is, we've typically tipped about 10 euros a person.

There have been some interesting articles on how for some companies, the guides have to give a certain amount of their tips to the company owner - supposedly the ones where they take a group picture.

  7. Just upgrade to an H6 so we have all free at sea perks, but this cruise is also show as a "distinctive voyages" which say we automatically get certain thing. My first question is that I don't see them listed anywhere on my summary. The second question is that it says it is combinable with free at sea perks. Does that mean instead of 50 excursion I get 100 and also double the wifi time. My ta was no help.

In case it matters we are on the BA Dec 3rd.

Yes. We booked with this promo as well as "free at sea" and the NCL rep actually suggested that we choose the shore excursion for our free benefit so we could combine the shore excursions and get a total of $100 for the two of us per port.

Can't speak to the double wifi. My guess would be yes, but you may want to give them a call to confirm.

  8. I hate to ask a stupid question... but I'd like to try it again next year when we're back on NCL - was there an app I was supposed to have used with my iPhone in addition to the airplane mode/wifi setting? Thanks [emoji5]

Oh the Iconcierge app? No I didn't have it on because I was trying for the no-cost concept.

In the end, I was happy to have spent the $5/ day to be able to text our children and our neighbor who had to put on our hurricane shutters during Irma!

  10. Oopppsssssy didn't realize there was an app? [emoji51] I put on airplane mode and then set wifi to NCL Getaway.....

We've booked another NCL for next year, and will be happy to try again if I didn't actually do it right!

  11. Maybe you were doing something wrong? My sister just got off the Dawn and had no problems sending me texts while at sea. No charges applied.

I tried several times (turned phone on and off etc), made sure I followed directions on this topic and couldn't send any texts until I purchased the option while on board. I had airplane mode on, and it said it was on NCL wifi, but - for me and my iPhone - it didn't actually do anything until I purchased the $5/day texting option. (Then had to set up via "login.com")

  12. Agree definitely go to the Nyhavn area (have ice cream and a waffle/waffle cone at Vaffelbagaren! it's on a corner).

If you decide you have time to go on a boat ride in the canal, go to Netto boats for 1/2 the price of the Stromma boats.

You may also want to check out a free walking tour with Copenhagen Free Walking Tour or Sandemans to get a great overview. The "grand tours" are typically 2 1/2-3 hours. Copenhagen was great!

  13. Question for you??? If you had a choice which of these sites would you say is a must do??? Faberge or Yusupov's Palace. The tour company says we can't do both and have to pick which one to do??

We were with SPB Tours 2-say Deluxe last week and our tour didn't include the Faberge museum but we did enjoy touring the inside of the YP with story of Rasputin!

  14. Also, we've really enjoyed free walking tours (tip afterward) when available. In Copenhagen, we went with Copenhagen Free Walking Tours (there's also Sandemans); in Tallinn, we did Tallinn Free Tour (check out freetour.com) and in Helsinki, we went with Green Cap Tours (there's also Happy Guide Helsinki, but not available on the day we docked.

We did private company tours in SPB, Berlin and Stockholm (which we were actually glad we had booked Stockholm privately since we all only learned upon cruise check in that we were docking at Nynashamn instead, and our company picked us up there instead)

You'll have a great time on your cruise - we loved the ports!

  15. So we're back from our Getaway cruise and I'm here to report on my experience with Wifi on the ship. As others recommended, I put phone on airplane mode, logged into NCL wifi and.... nothing...

I was unable to text our kids, both of whom also have IPhones. I tried several times, turning phone on and off, etc. etc.

What I decided to do was purchase the NCL option on the ship for $5/ day which gave me ability to text and also use What's App texting onboard. The $5/day was well worth the ability to keep in touch on the ship. FYI if anyone decides to do this, be aware that they'll charge you for the full number of days on the ship, regardless of the day you sign up (up to 4th day). No pictures within the texts could be seen on the ship with this option.

(I have ATT and had also purchased on-land coverage, ATT Passport)

  16. We just got back from NcL Getaway and used SPB Tours in 3 ports. Wonderful! In SPB, Elena was our guide who was outstanding! She was great and gave us terrific insight as well as history. We did the 2 day Deluxe, and will give a discount if you mention you're on CC
