  1. First time on a fly/cruise. Do not want to attach the cabin luggage labels before the flight as they will probably be removed /damaged upon arrival. Do I have to take a stapler and attach them between luggage collection and the transfer to the ship or are the cabin luggage labels different for a fly cruise?

The transfer staff at Heathrow rarely has staplers. I use some of the small identity code adhesives on the airline label, there are usually 3 left on each label. They stick very well.

  2. Salacia, it really wasn't as bad as it sounds....it was done by a really nice lady. I just couldn't figure out the point since I was boarding a ship full of sharp knives and forks. I never thought to ask what she was looking for. :)

The new security system at the QE Terminal has the same random search indicator as the airport systems. It's nothing personal.

  3. Bob, Please say that you searched for the, usually obscure, elevator. I've never been in a train station in Germany that didn't have one.

Wuerzburg doesn't. Cologne offers elevators, porters thar can be preordered by train staff and special assistance by Bahnhofsmission. It is a very large station indeed and a very busy one, too.

Btw: Hi, I'm back, long lost due to some sad family incidents.

  4. Wonder what they do with the cars?

They will be scrapped. This is a common practice as manufacturers do not want to see their cars on the market after having been involved in accidents of any kind.

  5. The webcam does say she is at sea but that is definitely Muscat with a small part of the beautiful mountains in the background. Wish we were there!!

Looking out of my office window - yes, couldn't agree more. Rain, snow, wet & cold here...

  6. That's not visiting a port in Argentina?

Well, have a look at a map. Ushuaia certainly is a town in Argentinia. But Chile is rather close. Passengers of Cunard ships have not been comfortably welcomed there last year and QV made a quick move into chilenian waters.

  7. I know the canal is very dependent on ship traffic, but does anyone have a general idea of how long after the start (6:00 is what was mentioned) until you get to the first lock. It's been a few years since we've done the canal and I know it's a day long process.

Also, if there is a good website to use for the webcams, please post here.

    Thanks, Karen

The ship will reach the first lock within 30 minutes from raising anchor at Colon.

  8. I think the ports that are listed on the webcams are pre-written and forgotten. Not only was the QM2's incorrect about Aqaba but the QE's said she was in Nassau on the day she was supposed to be there but they had canceled the call.

On a few occasions last year the list was updated. But most times it wasn't.

  9. Just checked the Cunard website and it now shows QM's next stop being

Khor Fakkan, United Arab emirates, I guess Muscat, Oman is out? Definitely a cruise in flux. I'm sure they can't wait to pick up/drop off their Dubai customers and get out of that part of the world for the time being. Does this suggest that they could just drop Dubai altogether and haul people overland to/from khor Fakkan or is this just the first safe place they felt they could stop to let people off the boat to stretch their legs? It's about 100 miles/180km overland to Dubai.

Khaur Fakhan has been the original first destination after passing Suez Canal, now to be displaced by Muskat.

  10. The Egypt ports of call were cancelled on the last leg of WC on QM2 in 2014 so Cunard knew it was on the cards. Aqaba was substituted with a great but very hot trip to Petra - several km walking in the heat but wouldn't have missed it.

Next year QM2 will go around Cape Hoorn instead - a perfect decision. But there due to political incompetence of two governments we will have a long period of sea days again.

  11. Please do realize that from tonight on the ship will travel in complete darkness. All windows blinded, all outside areas except deck8 aft closed from 6pm to 7am. This will be an unforgettable journey for all passengers - and certainly Cunard will loose many of them for future business.

The first and last leg of QM2s WC is becoming a rather unattractive journey. All POIs are passed in the dark or in 150 mls distance, no safe ports for more than a week. I have done both legs and I shall never ever do this again.

  12. I think ships generally go through the Suez in an escorted convoy, so anchoring for a while was probably routine.

    Roy

That's correct. In 2013 we arrived at 9pm and went trough from 4am to 2pm, mainly with thick fog.

  13. Very bumpy overnight and woke up to a little snow this morning and we went through little bursts of it until early afternoon. The temperature drop from yesterday was dramatic. By late afternoon the seas were calmer.

QE is according to AIS just south of Southampton

    (Long Island NY)

    ;-)

  14. Bobby, we must be reading different local weather forecast, but I certainly hope what you are seeing is correct.

Why does the ship need to overnight in NY, as pleasant as that might be for some passengers and problem for others? I understand that she is arriving late in NY by approximately 6 hours (that's not all that uncommon) - but the departure is delayed by more than 24 hours, resulting in a port cancellation in Nassau.

There must be a very good reason why Cunard altered the itinerary.

Oh, yes, tough contracts with te tour operators at NYC would be one reason.
