  1. We were in room 3002 on Jewel last year and LOVED it. Yes, we could hear the anchor drop but, other than that, it was silent enough to hear a pin drop. At one point the seas got a little choppy and we could hear the waves rhythmically slap the side of the boat but the motion was just a little light rocking, nothing awful.

The elevators are farther away so it's a longer walk, but we decided to view it as extra exercise to burn off all the rich food we were eating. :)

I'd get the same room again in a heartbeat.

  2. Are there must have, go-to options for dining?

Chops Grille costs extra but it's very good food. Then again, if you're cruising on a budget, it's not any better than an upscale restaurant in your hometown so you could skip it and not miss anything.

Are some bars/areas cheaper than others? Whats the average cost of a mixed drink and beer? Am I foolish to not invest in some sort of drink package?

Prices are the same at each bar. Here's a list of drink prices and how the packages break down to help you decide whether they're worth if for you. My husband is a light drinker but enjoys top-shelf scotch so between that and the unlimited water bottles, the premium package is an excellent deal for him.

What foods/drinks are available all the time for free?

As others have already commented, there's plenty of places to grab free food at almost any hour, plus the Windjammer has loads of food and is open a good part of the day/evening.

If you couldn't tell by now, we're traveling on the cheap, can you bring insulated cups and take drinks with you in larger portions? Also, can you take food back to your cabin?

    Yes and yes.

Are there any upgrades/packages/charged services that are highly recommended or are absolutely worth it?

The only packages we buy are the drink packages because they make sense for us. My husband gets a massage each trip and really enjoys it.

Any freebies available if I sign up or hit certain spots at certain times?

I've heard that if you go to the art show you can often get free things but I don't recall what. I've also heard that it makes sense to attend lectures (art show, port shopping, etc) because they often do drawings. They're not very well attended so your chance of winning is usually pretty high.
