  1. Do any of the Oceania ships have a promenade deck, or at least a section where you could sit on a deck chair in the shade?

On R ships there is a wonderful group of cushioned loungers where you can sit and read in relative quiet and - at least in my case - fall asleep easily. The area is just aft of the pool on the port side. Enjoy!

  2. Are “Salad Days” just ahead?

We have just booked our first Viking Ocean Cruise. While browsing the boards we saw a comment about the “sparse salad selections”.

DW and I daily create salad that included a wide variety of ingredients and have very much enjoyed creating similar fare on O.

Could those veterans of V cruises comment on the salad bars? Thanks.

  3. First timer on V...Does V give each passenger an ID card when they board as other lines do? With this you can charge any purchase and have the charge on your invoice. It's also used to register egress and ingress so they know that everyone is aboard.

First, thank you very much for the links to the ATW cruises. I will look through those for ideas of how to prep the house. I am also interested in how the individual cruisers researched and decided on private or ship's excursions for all those ports. It's taking forever with just our 44 ports! Also, i would imagine that you all had a whopper of a Meet & Greet to exchange ideas about excursions that you had room for others to join!

BTW, I noticed your interest in WWII history which you enhanced by visiting all of the sites you could at Pearl Harbor, etc. In Baltimore, there is a well maintained WWII Liberty Ship, the S.S. John W. Brownthat does 3 or so trips in Baltimore Harbor. I've been on it twice. During both sailing they had reenacts playing the part of President & Elenor Roosevelt, Abbott & Costello, McQuire Sisters- that sang 40s songs accompanied by a wonderful Jimmy Dorsey era band. There were lots of memorabilia collectors dressed up in WWII uniforms, - allies and Germany - showing off a phenomenal amount of their collections. There was a wreath laying ceremony in the outer harbor.

One of the highlights of the trip was having the ship go to General Quarters because we were under attack by a Japanese Zero. Fortunately it was chased away by the pompom guns and fly-bys by a B25 & a Corsair.

Here's the link to the organizations website: http://www.ssjohnwbrown.org

I do hope that they still have sailing days!

  5. Pet Nit Not,

Hadn't though about the cars and water heater draining. For the car I have a dribble charger and a gas additive that will keep the gas useable for a long time.

    Thanks again.

  6. Yes, ask friends to do this but minimize the burden.

Rather than asking the USPS to hold the mail, select the category for a temporary change of address. That means your mail will be delivered to your friends' address for the duration of the trip. They won't have to drive to your house, at least for this chore.

Take your friends out for a truly memorable dinner before you leave for your cruise and do it again afterwards.

Give your friend authority to throw out every catalog, flier, etc. You set the criteria and make your friends believe you have confidence in their judgment!

Before the first round the world cruise, there was an amazingly active roll call that discussed lots of the issues involved in an extended vacation. Is your roll call having equivalent conversations? What are your fellow cruisers saying about what else they're doing for the protracted vacation? If there's no thread about these issues, start the conversation.

Thanks to all who made suggestions!

Pet Nit Noy, You've made some great suggestions and I do like the one about asking the question about "what to do to prepare for an extended vacation" I will do that ASAP. Unfortunately at this point there are only two of us who have signed up for the full 85-day cruise. You don't, by any chance, have the title of that thread on the world cruise dialogue? I will do searches for it.

  7. Just tell oceania and regent to stop sending you mail. Other than brochures from oceania and regent we get very little mail now!

LOL. A perfect solution if only I could stop the bills that way!!

  8. Go on the USPS website and suspend your delivery. I do it every time we go on vacation.

Suspending mail doesn't work for holds over 30'days.

We will, if there's no other way, have it forwarded to a friend.

But I'm also trying to find out what other challenges that I haven't thought about.

    Thanks for the replies.

  9. We are going on an 85 day cruise and it just struck us. What do we do with the mail??!! We don't have any relatives close by so...do we burden a friend with piles of (mostly) junk mail??

And what about things we haven't thought about for a vacation that exceeds - by a long shot - our normal vacations??

If I had hair, I'd be tearing it out now!

  10. Next summer we are taking a cruise that stops in 44 different ports in 13 different countries. Most of the countries are members of the EU and I'm assuming that there really isn't any customs process when going from one EU country to another.

The two countries that aren't EU are Albania & Montenegro.

My question - what is the time to get though customs (including the ship's inspection) when going into those two and also the next stop after leaving those countries?

A time delay would obviously impact the taking of a private tour as we so patiently found out in Murmansk.

  11. If you are like us you might not want specialty reservations on each leg of that long cruise! Remember, they are set menus. It's possible to exhaust the dishes you want to try with a few visits.

Then again, you might want to try everything on the menu!

It's true that the GDR repeats every 14 days or so (sometimes that seems to change), but at least they have a number of courses available each night.

Not to worry ... you won't starve.

Also, I'm wondering if on such a long cruise you might want a fancy dinner each and every night ... that's when the buffet can come into play.

  12. What is available for breakfast in Horizons? was the food seasoned to your liking? We were on Regatta a few years ago and found the breakfast items bland. We loved all the other meals.

Other than coffee, tea, pastries etc I don't think there's anything else for breakfast in Horizons. You may mean either the Terrace or the Grand Dining Room. In any case you can find a sample menu for all of the restaurants on the O website.

  13. I've been looking for a Regatta Alaska May 24 roll call and don't see one -- are we sailing alone? ;p

    Xrae

This is our first Alaska cruise (July 21) and our 5th O cruise.

The last one was a Caribbean the others were longer and overseas. There is a distinct difference in the chatter on CC roll calls between the 'exotic' cruises and the last two. I came to understand that the Caribbean cruises are booked much later and therefore the roll call doesn't get started until several months before.

If I had to guess why the Alaska cruise roll calls are very quiet I would say it's a combination of the excursions being controlled by the ship and the fact that there will be a number of families onboard. Both things I would venture to guess have a significant impact on cruise specific related things. The general overall O questions are handled on the Oceania blog site.

  14. Is this the page you are viewing ?

    https://www.oceaniacruises.com/faq/

Down the left side there is a tab DINING when you click on that is shows the time frame for the different cabin Cat

When you sign in to MY ACCOUNT then BOOKED Cruises then on the right side there is a TO DO LIST it shows the exact dates

like final payment. date to make dining reservations

That is the page I am viewing. Wait. I want to try something......

The problem? - OE! I expanded the view on my browser and low and behold lots of choices!!

    Thanks!

Unfortunately I do not see the TO DO LIST. I clicked on the upcoming cruise and then the "Manage This Booking" It brought up a page with tabs for "Shore Excursions", "Dining", etc. Clicking on Dining takes me to an explanation of how many reservations we can make for the various types of berthing but nothing about when I can reserve. On Monday it will be 60 days before the cruise and I'll try then again.

  15. It will be listed under the heading Specialty Dining Reservations on page 3 of the Oceania Guest Booking statement (pdf or paper invoice) you received from Oceania or your TA.

Also the following text may be found under the Dining section of Oceania's FAQ page:

'And there in lies the rub'... Clicking on FAQ only shows making a cruise reservation, i.e. and nothing else

  16. I have been trying to verify the date before our next cruise that we can reserve times at the specialty restaurants. I can't find the info. I've tried "Managing this booking" and the FAQs but do not see anything about when a reservation may be made. (clicking on FAQ has an "Select an Option Bar" but clicking on it doesn't change anything.) Our Cruise documents states that we can reserve "....up to 7 days prior to sailing..."

Has O changed the policy? I thought it was 60 days prior?
