PoolSlider Posted February 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2018 Hello, What is the best method to get from ship to East Cowes ferry terminal? We have an overnight stop in June; would like to go to see Osborne House and back again in a day. Any ideas or helpful hints? Am I being unrealistic? Thanks for all advice. sddsddean Posted February 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2018 Best way from berth 46 (Ocean Cruise Terminal) to Red Funnel (I'm assuming you will use the fast ferry) is to walk...its only 10-15 mins. This map shows the route https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Ocean+Cruise+Terminal+(Berth+46)/Red+Funnel+Red+Jet/@50.8946774,-1.4050328,727m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x2bcdbe76173ecaf0!2m2!1d-1.4003089!2d50.8929551!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476c9b4cb356d:0xc9ecd9a1bb356492!2m2!1d-1.405763!2d50.894484 Osborne House is only just outside East Cowes, so easily able to 'do it' in a day. However, I think the jet ferry goes to West Cowes (wrong side of the river!). One of the local yokels on the boards (Hi JB!), will put you right on that. You could actually walk to Osborne if you've a mind to (even from West Cowes using the floating bridge). Heres a map showing the jet ferry terminal on the left of the river, vehicle ferry terminal on the right of the river and Osborne in the bottom right corner. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir///@50.7582692,-1.2916027,2477m/data=!3m1!1e3 Simon
John Bull Posted February 17, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 17, 2018 Berth 46 is Ocean Cruise Terminal. Very easy walk, less than 10 minutes.:) Out of the docks using the new Gate 5 (the exit gate for vehicles), & turn left to walk along Town Quay, past Gods Tower (stone building) & Platform Tavern on your right, to the traffic lights. The pedestrian entrance for the Red Funnel East Cowes car ferry is directly in front of you on that corner.. It's the car ferry that you want for Osborne House - the fast-jet ferry goes to (west) Cowes. Foot passengers don't have to pre-book tho I don't know whether it's cheaper to do so. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/50.8960356,-1.4049135/50.8936625,-1.4003685/@50.8951313,-1.4045553,17z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e2 and https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.8963224,-1.4045138,3a,30y,269.69h,86.32t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQYT_LtIcQ5ZvwZNmbPiBwg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/en/ Service is hourly, journey time a little under an hour. You can get a local Southern Vectis bus from East Cowes to Osborne House, about a mile. All very easy, the most difficult bit is the 5 to 10 minute walk down the drive at Osborne House. Yes, it's perfectly viable trip in a day. :) JB :) (local yokel :D)
PoolSlider Posted February 23, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted February 23, 2018 Thanks for the help! Wondering are taxis readily available off the ferry? Also any good cake/pastry shops in the area where Grandma could replenish her strength?
John Bull Posted February 23, 2018 #5 Share Posted February 23, 2018 Thanks for the help! Wondering are taxis readily available off the ferry? Also any good cake/pastry shops in the area where Grandma could replenish her strength? Yes, there's a taxi rank on Town Quay pier right opposite the foot-passenger entrance for the Red Funnel car ferry (the one you want). not the Red Jet fast-ferry linked by Simon (which you don't want, it goes to west Cowes) . It's an area for restaurants & pubs eg http://www.dancingmanbrewery.co.uk/about/ or http://southampton-pubs.co.uk/dukeofwellington/ rather than shops & bakeries & tearooms but ......... - there's a Starbucks right opposite, and I think a proper (;)) coffee shop further up the pier. - or a few yards up High St is Café Fumee (I've never been in there) http://cafefumee.co.uk/ - or if you wanted to push the boat out & have High Tea, there's https://grand-cafe.co.uk/ This is in South-Western House, originally the railway hotel for liner passengers (incl those on ill-fated Titanic). It's the other side of Ocean Terminal from the ferry pier. Check that the opening hours of the cafes suit your timing. Ignore the total mileage on this map, pick out the bits you want https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/50.8961723,-1.4048044/50.897321,-1.4063066/Duke+of+Wellington,+Bugle+Street,+Southampton/Ocean+Cruise+Terminal+(Berth+46),+Dock+Gate+4,+Cunard+Road,+Southampton/The+Dancing+Man+Brewery,+Town+Quay,+Southampton/50.8971601,-1.4041743/Grand+Cafe,+South+Western+House,+Terminus+Terrace,+Southampton/Ocean+Cruise+Terminal,+Cunard+Road,+Southampton/@50.8956473,-1.4060491,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m35!4m34!1m0!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476c84aa6f739:0xed95fa535dada20b!2m2!1d-1.4062034!2d50.8983397!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476cc5f970309:0x2bcdbe76173ecaf0!2m2!1d-1.4003089!2d50.8929551!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476c85395c4fd:0x4b1421cfd1880d09!2m2!1d-1.4062803!2d50.8973755!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x487471352bdf4897:0xddbc9e81240ebba8!2m2!1d-1.3968119!2d50.8975628!1m5!1m1!1s0x487476cc5f970309:0x2bcdbe76173ecaf0!2m2!1d-1.4003089!2d50.8929551!3e2 JB :)

Also any good cake/pastry shops in the area where Grandma could replenish her strength? Just in case you meant taxis at the East Cowes ferry terminal rather than Southampton terminal, I wanted to say that I don’t think there is a taxi rank there. See https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/en/isle-of-wight-ferry/terminal-facilities/east-cowes/ for info, where they advise pre-booking a taxi. You could do this just before boarding the ferry, that would be enough notice. There are links to the bus timetables on that webpage too. But buses every 20 minutes, 5 minute journey to Osborne House gates. http://www.islandbuses.info/servicelisting.shtml Routes 4 and 5. (currently the bus stop at East Cowes is outside Waitrose supermarket, visible from the ferry terminal & a 2-minute walk) I don't think there are any snacks in the area, other than a fish-and-chip shop or a carry-out from Waitrose JB :)
marylizcat Posted February 23, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2018 They sell nice cakes on the ferry! Or there is the cafe at Osborne House. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/osborne/plan-your-visit/food-and-drink/
PoolSlider Posted March 21, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted March 21, 2018 Ok I'm back. So if we go to West Cowes we can get a taxi to Osborne House? If we go to East Cowes we take the bus? I want to get this right. If we arrive on a rainy day, I might prefer just grabbing a taxi over waiting for the bus. And I like options. Can you clarify? Thanks again! I want to get this right. If we arrive on a rainy day, I might prefer just grabbing a taxi over waiting for the bus. And I like options. Can you clarify? Thanks again! The Medina River separates west Cowes (fast-ferry, yachting village) from East Cowes (car ferry, Osborne House). A chain-ferry across the Medina links the two sides. A shiny new chain-ferry replaced the faithful old rust-bucket last year and it's had endless problems - frequently it's been out of action for weeks at a time. When it's out of action a launch replaces it for foot passengers, but vehicles have a 10 mile diversion via Newport. Even if the chain-ferry is working there's a fee to pay for cars, and sometimes a long line - and you'll be paying waiting time for the driver. So fast-ferry to west Cowes then a taxi can be problematic / expensive. :( https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/RedJet+Terminal,+Cowes/Red+Funnel+Ferries,+East+Cowes/@50.7285001,-1.3387707,12.31z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x48747b532d7fd5bf:0xa2449773c8d2f599!2m2!1d-1.2967678!2d50.762724!1m5!1m1!1s0x487464a9669aae5f:0x451228eef374bd82!2m2!1d-1.289981!2d50.758945!3e0 But now for the good news :) I got it wrong. :o There is a taxi rank at the car ferry terminal at East Cowes. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.7589273,-1.2899041,3a,75y,343.69h,80.6t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sLLth08dzGcXlilwHfm3K2A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 (spin the camera to see 3 taxi bays outside the White Hart Inn.) A taxi rank. Not sayin' there'll be a taxi  But if it's wet try to be first off the ferry. Or the bus stop in East Cowes is about 150 yards from the car ferry, outside Waitrose supermarket, and it has a shelter. JB :)

asubaru Posted March 23, 2018 #12 Share Posted March 23, 2018 Do you know if Uber is reliable on the isle? We are thinking of taking Uber from West Cowes to the IOW Pearl and then to Osborne House. I am afraid I don’t know about Uber on the island, as we have our car when we are there. However, I am wondering why you want to go to IOW Pearl? There are so many interesting places on the island. This is just a shop and cafe, catering for coach parties. Why not go to Carisbrooke Castle for instance?

I used to drive coach tours, including to the IoW. IoW Pearl was always on the itinerary because it's on the glorious south-west coast road from Shanklin to The Needles, because coach-parking is easy, because it's got outside tables overlooking the sea, because the jewellery is of interest to some, and because you get a decent cup of tea & decent service from a place that's used to dealing with coach parties. (oh, and a back-hander on any sales ;)) As you say, nothing wrong with the place. No reason not to drop in while passing. But a special journey across the island ?And in a taxi? Yes, IMHO2, Carisbrooke Castle is much closer and much more interesting. Or the steam railway at Havenstreet. Or even Godshill or Arreton Barns. But still quite expensive by taxi altho you could arrange for the driver (or a colleague) to come back for you at an agreed time, to avoid paying for waiting time. Sorry, I know nothing about Uber on the island. In fact I know nothing about Uber, period - all too technical for this dinosaur. (which reminds me, IMHO don't waste your time or money at the dinosaur fossil place near IoW Pearl unless you're an enthusiast or have kids) JB :)
