handbellplayer Posted January 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2018 We are arriving in Vancouver on 8/31 on the Celebrity Millennium from an Alaska cruise. We are booked at the Sheraton Wall Centre for one night, flying out on 9/1. The Sheraton web site lists the following rates for taxis: Port of Vancouver - Canada Place Terminal Travel Distance: Approximately 1.0 km/0.62 miles Fee: 10 CADPort of Vancouver - Ballantyne Terminal Travel Distance: Approximately 17.0 km/10.56 milesTaxi Fee: 25 CAD Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Travel Distance: Approximately 17.0 km/10.56 miles Taxi Fee: 31 CAD; Flat fee per way. Do these rates sound correct? Also, which terminal does Celebrity use?

Do these rates sound correct? Also, which terminal does Celebrity use? Man, the Wall Centre has a really sloppy person in charge of their website info... the fixed rate cab is INBOUND from YVR only, and the rate changed from $32 a couple of years ago (a year after Ballantyne pier stopped being used by any cruiseline as the passenger terminal is to be flattened to expand the industrial container terminal nearby. It will never be used for cruiseships again). Distance to airport driving is touch over 13km by most direct route, and barely scrapes past 14km on the longest remotely-sensible route - inbound to hotel is ~400m longer due to one-way streets downtown, but anyone racking up 17km in a cab is ripping you off for a bigger fare (no longer happens inbound due to fixed rates, but outbound there are still the usual few dishonest cabbies - specify your route when you get in the car (I like Cambie - while a bit longer it's usuallly less traffic-clogged than Granville or Oak, and merely requesting it shows the cabbie you're familiar with the route options - i.e. you'll notice if he tries to mess with you...). I'd say that $10 on the meter is a little steep for a cab ride FROM the pier, as the real traffic bottlenecks which pad fares occur inbound - more likely $6-7. Obviously Ballantyne rates are no longer relevant. From hotel TO the airport is metered, and $30-35 is a reasonable assumption - since you are staying on for a day the travel cost/time for you won't be as impacted by other cruisers. Sep 1 is part of the Labour Day long weekend, but outbound travel that day is unlikely to be busy. All rates Canadian.
handbellplayer Posted January 13, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted January 13, 2018 Thanks - I ended up canceling that reservation and booked the Hyatt Regency Vancouver for a good price via Hotwire.
Rare martincath Posted January 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2018 No probs - Hyatt is about 400m closer to the pier, so likely a buck less in the cab to it and a buck more to the airport. Frankly I'd just walk to the hotel if it's not raining and you don't need any assistance handling bags - it's smooth sidewalks all the way, only ~700yards, and unless there's no queue at all for cabs you may be faster on foot!
