Copenhagen—Copenhagen Free Walking Tours

This was one of the best tours I have taken in any city at any time. Just tip generously at the end—your Guide will have earned it.

Stockholm—Free Walking Tour Stockholm

This company is not the same as the one in Copenhagen, but it also provides very good tours.

You can supplement these tours with the walking tours set out in Rick Steves Northern Europe Cruiseports. Using the Free Walking tours and the Rick Steves walking tours, I can guarantee that you will see things and learn things that aren’t on any of the ship’s excursions. (I know because we compared notes with our table mates at dinner and they would tell us, “Wow, we didn’t see that!”)

Tallinn—There are a couple of companies that offer free walking tours. We just did the one from the Rick Steves book (which was quite comprehensive).

Ditto on the walking tours. I did them for Stockholm and Tallinn, and there are a few different companies you can look at online to see what they offer. I found that I got such an insight into the histories of these cities that I wouldn't have gotten on a cruise tour.

In Tallinn we used

We booked online and as it turned out there were only 4 of us so we got to see a lot. Tallinn is a beautiful city with wonderful views and easy to walk from the ship. Our guide met us right outside of the fenced area and left us in town at the end to continue on our own. It’s very easy to get around and very very enjoyable.

Here's my cut and pasted TA review:

Our group of 8 (grandparents, parents, four kids ages 10-16) had a wonderful time on our food walking tour. Kurtu, our guide, was so friendly and knowledgeable, and had a great rapport with our kids. We learned so much not only about the history of Tallinn, but also first hand stories about life under Soviet occupation and Estonia's early days of independence. Fascinating! The food ranged from interesting to really good. FYI, the "porridge" option is a huge bowl of mashed potatoes with some sort of grain mixed into it. Tasty, if a bit carb heavy. We were on a limited schedule due to our cruise ship schedule, but Kurtu carved out a bit of time for shopping for us. The company was very easy to communicate with, and I would highly recommend them. We chose to pay to have them bring us back to the pier, which was maybe a bit pricy but easier than walking with kids and grandparents, since the tour finishes on the far side of the old town. One of our daughters has a food allergy and they were very accommodating as well.
