Gibraltar cruise port to Cable Car

Recommended Posts

How far is the Cable Car from Cruise ship dock? If we get off ship early & weather is good will we be able walk to Cable Car take it up to top and walk down? How much time should we plan? Want to see the Apes not interested in the tunnels. It the walk back down easy to follow?

Hopefully resident Ollie&bertsmum will chip in, in the meantime I'll do my best.......

The lower cable-car station is between the South Bastion at the southern end of Main Street & the Botanical Gardens. It's about a mile & a half / 35 minutes from the ship, all on level ground. With a decently early departure from the ship, before 9am, you should avoid the lines for the cable-car when the hordes of day-trippers arrive by coach from the Spanish resorts.

A taxi would of course be quicker - they'll possibly be looking for folk wanting a tour so for just a ride to the cablecar you might have to use your charm.;)

The intermediate cablecar station isn't used in summer, to speed-up the throughput of customers.

But there's another excellent apes den just 200(?) yards from the top station on St Michael's Road..

The walk down from the top to the town takes something under an hour without stops, by a variety of routes ....

- all of it by the zig-zag roads that cross & re-cross under the cablecar route to end up back at the southern end of Main Street

- or broadly those roads but with more-direct but slightly dangerous flights of stone steps in one or two places

- or via the Mediterranean Steps from near the summit (apparently quite challenging but I've never done it)

- or by heading north across the saddle on Signal Station Road to near the Great Siege Tunnel (great views across the isthmus, the airport & the Spanish mainland) and down zig-zag Willis Road past the WW2 tunnel entrance & the Moorish Castle, to end up at the northern end of Main Street & Casemates Square. (From there it's 20/25 minutes back to the ship). That's vaguely the route I've marked on googlemaps, though there are small short-cuts you can take & the topography makes it quite difficult to comprehend on a map. Meandering off that basic route up to the northern summit & to various WW2 gun batteries as I've shown on the map is quite energetic but rewarding.

For a reasonable price you can take a local bus there. Pick up the bus near Casemates Square (about a 7 minute walk from the ship). I think it was the #3 bus but double check when you are there.
