This is our cruise journal & review - NCL Jewel: 7 Nights (NYC-Florida & Bahamas) Sunday, Feb. 13-20, 2011 - Pier 88, Manhattan (NYC) - okay, caution - it's lengthy & sub-divided for easier reading ....

We sailed on a soldout cruise w. 500 children, with no last minute Upsell call, but upgraded OV # 8096 to Balcony #9592 while onboard, free. Overall, it was a great cruise for (most of) us as we had 11 in our group.

Getting there:

Local car service took us via LIE thru mid-Queens, across 59th Street Bridge into Manhattan, across town on 57th Street, then a right on 12th Ave & across 59th Street & straigh ahead & up the ramp to the drop-off. Security directing traffic to keep things moving along, our mini-van was perfect for 4 pax with luggages - just can't wait to dump those winter coats ....

Embarkation / Day 1: (Cabin 8096)

Plenty of porters available to help with luggage with just the Jewel & tipped them, of course. Walked inside building & directed to Latitude line, took 20 minutes to reach the next available checkin agent, and filled out a short/simple Health Questionnaire while waiting. Photo taken & issued our Jewel Boarding/Key Cards - passed quick security screening & 2 NCL photographers taking embarkation photos. Our niece's family with 2 1/4 years old arriving later used the regular check-in line, but didn't wait long because of the young child in her group.

We made it up to Deck 7 around 1 pm, access to cabin areas restricted as they're still cleaning and were directed to buffet on deck 12. We walked up the atrium stairs to deck 8 behind the BL to our cabins, dropped the carryons and walked down rear stairs to MDR - stopped by crew & told her we're NOT going to buffet & we continued, walked inside, greeted, and quickly seated - nice table for 4 in rear/AFT with a great view of Hudson River. Luggages started getting delivered around 2 pm & one were outside the cabin already - the unpacking process began. DH's arrived later after we came back from Muster Station drill, no Life Vests required - crew demonstrated and our Key Card served to register us for attendance and we're quickly dismissed in 10 minutes. DH unpacked her items & we put our luggage away (joyfully, no packing for 7 days ****.) We managed to get an obstructed OV Cabin for handicapped pax from our PCC, still unassigned at our last minute booking, so plenty of room for 2 & windows only about 30% blocked at the bottom, great natural lights (crew walking outside & working during the day while at sea, doing routine maintenace - keep curtains at least partially closed) Our hanging toiletry organier came in extra handy since shelf space was limited & DH needed room to leave her stuff out for use.

We finished unpacking before the sailaway and ship moved quietly down the Hudson & was soon passing the Statue of Liberty out to sea, checked for last minute emails & them switched off smartphones & backup GSM phone (note: it worked fine as Vodafone NL-BTC in Nassua, Bahamas, partner of VZW using previously activated global SIM card.) MDR was busy at 7 pm & did not take reservations for 11 people in our party but was able to seat us quickly once everyone was outside & ready - electronic display boards were helpful.

Blue Lagoon - it's much larger than the older ones situated on deck 7, but we found fewer menu items to choose from. The wings were good & the wonton soup comforting along with the chef's salad, loved the cheesecake. Services could be a bit faster and quicker once the food order is placed and the crews apparently reassigned to help as needed when it's busy. Food can be wrapped & taken back to enjoy in one's own cabin or what not.

Day 2/full Sea Day: (OV Cabin 8096 became Balcony #9592)

Jewel's navigational info channel on wind/speed/direction, air/water temperature, waves, distance/destination were not working or being shown - wasn't sure whether it's a technical issue or whatever. Waves getting getting rougher during the day & temp in the 50's, less frequent cruisers in our group feeling the motions lasting into late night. Everyone managed to find fun & excitement in the casino after lunch in the MDR.

We were in our cabin in the late afternoon getting ready for cat naps when the phone rang - the Guest Services Manager asking whether we mind changing our room as another party "badly" needed our cabin. **** We would, in exchange, be upgraded to a Balcony, midship, deck 9 - BB category - at no charge to us, wow. Spoke to DH and agreed to the change but we would have to pack quickly as we had dinner plans with the rest of the group as it's lobster(tail) with grouper night - and lines were longer than usual - some asked to share tables.

The GSM actually came about 45 minutes later to personally help us move our luggages down the hall, up the elevator & gave us our new room keys as her crew were all busy & not available to assist. For the next 6 nights, we settled in after unpacking for the 2nd. time in our mid-ship balcony cabin, cool - smaller but functional, just like our Dawn's balcony in 2005 - 2 robes, plus a hot water maker. We felt really lucky as we understood the ship was sold out and no upsell calls before our sailing - yes.

Stardust theater was nearly full for the 2nd. showing of "Band on the Run" by NCL Productions, it was high energy as always with the band playing in the back of the stage (no background sets or scenery - unlike previous ones by JARC with a "younger/leaner casts.)

Late nite - DH felt hungry & ordered Room Serivce, took a while for the call to be answered as they're busy with lots of orders, told that delivery will be about 60 minutes - okay as she didn't want to go to Blue Lagoon again (tried their famous mild/hot wings, it was great - services were a little slow but plenty of tables & available seating.) The hot bowls of chicken noodle soups were wonderful to go with turkey sandwich and fruit plates, we also got iced teas and milk (looked to be fewer choices on the menu than before.)

Day 3/arrival @CC:

We sailed slowely into the sunny Cape (temp in the 60's), turned & eased into our dock. We're expecting a lot of folks to be off the ship & fewer people eating up at the buffet and pool area, wrong - apparently, too many of us been to Disney/Epcot & Kenndy Space Center, etc. and/or felt time is too short for it to be worthwhile on the wallet. We took an available taxi shuttle to nearby Coca Village for 2 hours, did a bit of walking around & photo ops, and then called our taxi driver Fred to come get us for the return. We were entertained by dolphins playing in the waters from our balcony. We dine at Azuar where we found services to be a bit quicker & had excellent desserts, ship's photographers were around as usual.

By now, we noticed a pattern in the buffet with our large group of new cruisers sailing together as we normally don't eat many meals there - empty plates/dishes & cups weren't getting cleared quickly as it's fairly busy & full most of the time, with folks spending time & children running around as well - it's a challenge to find seating at times if you have a big group (it's easier to split up.) While most crew members were busy & doing their work, I noticed a few pairs (of 2's) simply walking past our tables with piles of dirty/emptied plates and ignored them - while another walked by with a tray but only took the cups. Using the same blue washcloth to clean & wipe the table after picking up bits of food/sauce & whatnot just didn't look, feel nor seem right to me - not to mention that I didn't see use of spray bottle with diluted bleached or cleaning solutions to better wipe down the surfaces of the table - before you know in a blink, the next pax sat down & began eating. The "Washy Washy" girl at the mid-ship entrance were great but it's a honor system of hand washing if you came up from AFT elevators/stairs. Luckily, didn't hear of any major issues with noro-virus during our cruising.

Two navy-blue uniformed "inspectors" came onboard and apparently conducting food safety checks at the buffet so we saw lots of busy staffers and white uniformed NCL officers trying to get everything in order. Majority of the crew carried on business as usual - for the remainder of the crew, whenever we're upstairs at the buffet, we continue to notice crew apparently chatting & pretending to be busy, and really not helping some passengers in obvious need of minor assistance, like finding a clean & available space to sit & eat. We had to be careful to avoid getting bumped at times by loose children running around unsupervised with our plate of food in one hand and cup in another hand. At least some of pax. eating at the designated handicapped seating area closest to the buffet stations, it looked to me, should be somewhere else while others in motorized wheelchairs and walkers seemed frustrated but kept their calmness.

Day 4/GSC:

Private Island is vastly improved, signs of ongoing constructions activities for the new pier/docking but not while we're there. Crew worked hard to manually load everything including heavy cooler chests with ice, etc. onto the large tender boats for transfering to the island starting even before 10 am once we dropped anchor. Pax with early tender group #'s began boarding after 11 am, we had #11 and ate lunch on the ship before ours were called around 1 pm for the "fun" ride to shore. Previously, we had to wait for & use the ship's own smaller tender boats so the process was slower - now, we have to wait for it to be filled up with as much as 400 pax before they go. BBQ lines were long and it stayed open past 2:30 pm with the white uniforms telling the crew to hurry & get it wrapped out. We went back to the ship around 4:00 pm and took a nice nap before dinner at the Mongolian Hot Pot at $15 p/p - worth it & we get all the beef & chicken that we can eat - and the handmade dumpling mix were very good & tasted fresh, we loved it along with the coconut ice cream. The Magical show by Jean Pierre Parent was comical and fun, not overly amazing but it's entertaining for laughs.

Day 5/Bahamas:

We docked at Nassau with the Carnival Fascination already in port (the Carnival Pride came in later,) and were quickly cleared by locals to disembark, most members in our party signed up for the Atlantis package & were off early on with the tour group. We enjoyed another leisure breakfast before taking a minivan taxi over to Paradise Island for $4 p/p and left our "economic investment" dollars at the casino, we walked around in "public" areas & took photos, checked out the high-end shops before returning to the Jewel for lunch.

In the afternoon, we came back out to shop around a bit on busy "main street" with several thousand cruise ship passengers roaming, picked up some sodas and photos for our first-timers, and all abroad at 5:30 pm. We ate in the MDR for another fine 5 course meal as the ship eased out of the pier for the trip northbound to NYC, oh no - just 2 full sea days left - but, everybody is enjoying the cruise & nearly forgotten about the rough seas.

The subtle Nickelodeon functions geared toward the younger children were continuing and we could still hear kids running up & down the hallways on our deck (#9) late into the evening & screaming parents trying to rope them into the cabins. On the other hand, my sister-n-laws cabin just behind Blue Lagoon on deck 8 didn't notice any noise issues or problems with loud crowds like we found in our previous MR cruise on the Star.

Day 6 & 7 - Sea Days:

Lots of sales going on, the Photo Gallery getting busy with folks busy trying to find their favorite ones - Latitude members get 20% on gangway photos priced at $12.95 each - but no other package deals or discounts to get excited about. We received our invites for another Latitude (Silver & up) wine & cheese gathering for Friday evening at the Fyzz Lounge - probably attended by about 40 guests & surprisinly, many Asians in this group (must be from metro NY area?) Couldn't find our gangway photo taken at CC - oh well.

Tepppanyaki was good & fun, and often sold out - our niece's group ate twice there and they also heard about our good review of the Hot Pot. But were shocked to find tiny insects in their steaming soup stock, apparently from soiled/unwashed vegetables (Bak Choy, they think ....) after they got refills for their all-you-can-eat beef & chicken along with vegetables/sides. The food service manager came & apologize and waived the surcharges for that meal & noted the problems.

Nevertheless, niece's little 2 1/4 years old got sicked in the stomach & vomitted twice that night (from eating off the Hot Pot with live things ??) & into the next morning along with diarrhea - while another adult member also threwed up all her stomach contents (sorry for this graphic description, but I promised them to include it in my review.) Housekeeping came to the cabins to cleanup and redbag the soiled sheets & towels, etc. and the nurse reassured mom but that there isn't much to be done, and only if conditions worsen - they will be seen by the doctor. Our poor baby "Emma" was scared and dehydrated, wanted to drink apple juice and refused when we offered ginger ale or water instead - but eventually fell asleep in the comforting arms of mommy/our niece.

As part of the M&G group, I ended up missing the special invitation to a mid-morning private/exclusive tour of the Bridge with the Captain & his officers as I remained tied up with helping the illed ones. Luckily, Emma recovered by day's end - dunno what else to say, just hope they will take a closer look at their procedures for handling vegetables & produce for the hot pots.

Spinnaker's Lounge on Deck 13 was the place to play Bingo, but too expensive to me at $39 for 3 games and $69 for the power package - a lucky couple in front of us won one of 3 games as the sole winner and also the prize of free Caribbean cruise for 2, with a "reward" tip of $20 for the little guy that drawn the matching stub.

The last evening's Le Cirque Bijou & farewell tribute by the Jewel crew, staff & officers was wonderful & packed, and the casino was still going strong. One last thing to do before the night was simple, to stuff all the dirty clothes back into the luggage, color-tag it and leave it outside the cabin as we were not in a rush to be off the Jewel on a Sunday morning.

Day 8/Disembark: Icy cold 22 degree weather homecoming ....

We passed the Statue of Liberty around 7:30 am & watched it over coffee from our balcony before heading down to Azura for a sit-down full breakfast (Tsar - the MDR was closed & the Garden Cafe full and too cold (22 deg. F) for the Great Outdoors. We docked right on time around 8 am pulling into the pier and was cleared to begin Express Walk-off around 9 am, which apparently lots of folks decided to do and the lines were long and went all the way around on Deck 7 with a 2nd. gangway used in Fwd.

The bottomneck was supposed to be with CBP staffing and resulting in folks eager to get home being held on top of the stairs and standing of front of the manned elevator, before being released in groups down into the luggage area, which came out quickly & sorted by color already. We're held by pier personnel for about 15 minutes & there're pax in wheelchairs, walkers & children with special needs - "ain right" for them to be treated at the last moment this way.

Finally, we walked outside into the cold & crossed 12th Avenue, hopped into a line of waiting yellow taxi and were soon out of the QMT in Queens - forecast for light "snow" for Monday morning, oh, dear - let's turn around if we could (but not for this week's soldout cruise with 1,000+ children running all over the Jewel as a full Nick programming.)

This evening, well .... no more MDR, it was takeout time as neither of us wanted to cook .... :p

P.S. Keep an open mind, all review & comments are subjective in nature ;) - questions are welcomed and if our tiny contribution to CC help someone else plan for a better cruising experience when it's their turn to sail the Jewel or similar sister ships, I call this a success - we had fun & almost an entirely good experience  . And, there's always room for improvements .... happy cruising :D

A few points:

Hot water maker - available in balcony cabins but NOT in oceanview or inside cabins. Instant coffee mix provided with sugar & creamer. Bring your own favorite. Hot chocolate available in buffet in the morning, hint, hint.

Frig by Dometric, Model Hipro 3000 at 1.1 cu. ft. - no ice compartment but cold enough, kept milk at safe temperature. If emptied, will keep 1 litter soda bottles upright easily, or our 20 oz. ones brought in Nassau. The larger 1.5 liter sodas should fit if the plastic main shelf is removed.

Electrical - 3 free 110 volt, 3-prong grounded outlets in the cabin (none inside the bathroom) for our use in the obstructed OV cabin. Also, 3 available 110 volts, 3-prong grounded outlet in our BB cabin. Hairdryer is rated at 1000 watts and use 220 volt from its own non-removable wall outlet.

Telecomm - wireless signals were solid from our balcony cabin with RJ-45/Ethernet hard-wired port available (bring one of your own cable along, just in case) Cabin to cabin phone calls will go to Voice Mail if not answered in 4 or 5 rings and can be retrived in the cabin. A few families using FRS/GMRS 2 way radios but not sure if they are that effective except at GSC or up on open air decks.

Analog TV - Both our OV & Balcony cabins used Philips TV and has RGB video/audio-RCA plugs in front & Remote control that can be switched, it will work with one's own portable DVD player/Camcorder with proper cabling or MP3 player for audio only. MSNBC, Fox News, HBO/movie, sports, cartoon and info channels were available.

Towel animals on most nights, chocolates are gone. Ice bucket refilled twice daily (kept ours inside the frig. so it kept longer) & our cabins cleaned, towels replaced & turned down each night.

Laundry Specials - $25 offered on Day 5 (Thursday) while at Nassau, Bahamas - "Wash & Fold" for all you can fit into the (17" by 23.25") paper NCL laundry bag - picked up by 12 noon & returned on Friday evening.

Dining Specials - Best of All Buffet (Mon. lunch), Best of India (Fri. lunch) and Jazz Brunch (Sat. brunch) all at $15 p/p. There're no Early Bird and/or 2 for 1 Dine Specials.

Daughter and I want to know what the bingo $69 power package includes. We were think of splitting a game just to try our luck.

Oh dear, :D it's a good thing I wrote it down on a piece of scrap paper that didn't get throw away like the pile of Art Auction flyers, ha ha - okay, here's the deal - as per request: :p

$39 for Basic Bingo at 1 session: 3 Games (valued really at $25 ??)

$49 for 6 Games

$69 for 9 Games, 5 strips of Instant Wins ($2000, $1000, $100, $20, $5, $1 etc.,) Bingo T-Shirt, and Jackpot Raffles to the Cruise for 2 in the Caribbeans (valued up to $2,000 or $1,000 Future Cruise Credits)

Instant Wins also sold pre-shows at the Stardust Theater, etc. for $20 (up to 6 strips plus a NCL Sports T-Shirt) and someone during one of the show we attended won $1,000 instantly.

A few more interesting notes for those of you planning your week onboard & your budget (i.e. Bingo can get very expensive when it's all added up):

Slots/Blackjack Tournament buy in @ $15 for all Casino At Sea members (free, just sign up on the spot) to play. Players earning 1,500 points known as Seabucks will get a free "Drink Card" good for house brand drinks & beverages only at the casino while playing - that included our Pina Coladas, soda & bottled water. Seabucks earned are redeemed at the end of the cruise (minimum of 1,000 points ??) to offset OBC charges, etc.

Unlimited Soda is $6.25/day+18% service charge. Canned Pepsi products are $1.95 each+18%.

Nickelodeon - Breakfast w. SpongeBob & Dora the Explorer at the Azura MDR on 2 different Sea Day mornings at $15 for adults, $10 for children 4-12 and kids 3 & under being free. Several free Meet & Greet events with Nick characters - check your NCL Dailys for details & time.

Speciality Restaurants do not require advance reservations but highly recommended, booked up to 24 hours in advance (72 hours for Latitude Gold/Platinum members)

NCL's signature Chocoholic Buffet scheduled for Day 6 (Friday) which is a full Sea Day @ Garden Cafe, Deck 12/Mid - we're used to seeing it in the MDR on previous NCL ships. It's a bit late for some at those hours but worth the time if you have never seen one.

The Behind The Scene Ship Tour (extra charge) was held on Day 6 also while at sea.

Portrait Photos taken are $19.95 ea/no discounts - not even for Latitude members when we asked about it, but there're Early Bird Special on Tuesday & Saturday: Get 4 wallet pictures of the same with purchase of 8x10 portrait from 9 am to 12 noon.

Happy Cruising :)

Oh, dear - I'm seeing snow flakes again outside our windows here at home, not again .... We already missed the warm weather down South

Thanks for so many details. Just a couple questions. Nearly all of the reviews are from Sun-Sun sailings and our cruise in June is Sat-Sat. Do you think those specialty lunches will be first sea and last sea day? Did you go to either "best of all" or the brunch?

Out of curiosity, who are you referring to in your review as "dh"? I thought it meant dear husband, but then I noticed you said "her" or "she" a few times following "dh" so I got confused. No biggie, just trying to follow along, lol.

When is Dress UP night, White Hot Party, and is there a tropical theme night?

Dress UP or not nights were Day 2 (Monday) & Day 6 (Friday) for Portraits in the Atrium with the MDR being rather "strict" on enforcing Resort Casual dress codes. White Hot Party was Day 5 (Thursday.)

Day 1 was "Welcome Toga Party," Day 2 "Disco themed," Day 3 "Island Nights Deck Party," and Friday, the "Chocoholic Buffet" @ 10:30 pm being at sea. (but, really nothing special or unique about it, except for CB)

The International Crew Show was Day 7 (Saturday) at 3 pm in the Stardust Theater (which was used also for Big Screen Movie showing on different times/day of the week)

For your June sailing, my best guess would be that the day of the week will be adjusted based on its scheduled sea days - i.e. Best of All on Sunday, Taste of India on Thursday & Jazz Brunch on Friday .... or, they might do Jazz Brunch on Sunday & flip the other 2 specials? You guess might be better than mine, I've learned to simply read & check the Daily upon embarkation or as soon as it's out.

Up in the Garden Cafe, there are Indian selections daily for both lunch & dinner as one can't miss the curry smell passing thru it, so I'm not convinced on pay a surcharge for an exclusive luncheon. Ditto the same for daily Chinese/Asian entrees in the Cafe for lunch & dinner.

We're pleasantly surprised that Escargot or snails, French style (exactly like the ones prepared in Le Bistro) was available as a starter in the MDRs on Saturday evening, prepared with butter - it was GOOOOD and I ordered an extra serving & skipped my salad.

We didn't go to any of the themed specialty lunches so .... maybe, someone that cruised recently on the Jewel can help you with the answer.

DH (Dearest Half - refer to spouse) and I walk down one flight of stairs to Blue Lagoon for lunch when we didn't want to eat off the same identical Lunch Menu in the MDR, and got our mild hot Wings, soup, salad & meatloaf for a change (along with ice cream & coffee) seated by the windows.

Happy Cruising to you all planning to sail soon as we will soon be thinking about our next cruise destination .... maybe with NCL's affiliated, Star Cruises in Asia, and tap our new Latitude Gold status for the perks - like priority tendering in many of their oversea ports, ohhhhhhh .... "honey, what's the budget for our next vacation later this year?" ;)

I loved the won-ton soup in the Blue Lagoon. My sister had the tomato soup, and said it was great. Of course the buffalo wings are way too good. It was always a nice quiet area for us to go for something little. They also had very friendly servers.
