We visited Tivoli last year with Romeinlimo. We were coming from Rome not Civitavecchia.

It is a lovely place to visit. We enjoyed the leisurely pace and beautiful gardens and fountains at Villa d' Este.

We went to Villa d'Este from Civitavecchia in 2009, also with Romeinlimo. It was a gorgeous day and we enjoyed the fountains, views and al fresco paintings. The town is also interesting. There is a little train ride you can take through the narrow streets of the oldest part of town. We had some free time there for lunch and roaming around. It was a great tour in comfortable vehicles with professional and personable drivers. To top off a great day...we stopped for gelato on the way back to the port.:D:D

We have actually spent 2 nights in Tivoli (while on a driving trip) and it certainly is an interesting day trip from the port. The city is located on the opposite side of Rome from the port, but the excursions (or if you rent a car the driving route) bypasses Rome by simply taking the ring road around Rome. There are two very excellent places to see in Tivoli. One is the well known Villa d'Este/Tivoli Gardens (much of this is outdoors). The other that is really interesting is Hadrian's Villa or Villa Adriana which is located just outside of the town. If you are taking an excursion you should want a tour that includes both places.

We did a tour from Rome with driverinrome and saw the two sites Hank mentioned, had a wonderful lunch, stopped in a supermarket to buy wine, and in a small medieval village (I forget the name). Our driver was Roberto and he was great. He speaks good English and is a lot of fun. This makes a very nice day trip if you do not want to go to Rome.

I agree...our Romeinlimo tour went to both places, but the gardens stand out in my mind...they are beautiful.
