5521544 Posted September 6, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2009 My husband and I will be leaving in a few weeks on our cruise aboard RCCL -FOS. We do not use credit cards and are planning to bring a mixture of cash, travelers checks, and our debit card. However, I would prefer the travelers checks because of the replacement gurantee if lost or stolen within 24 hours. My concern is that if they are lost or stolen while onboard will we be able to get the replacement within 24 hours since we are at sea? Is the ships pursers desk able to accept refund/replacement from American Express for our travelers checks. Does anyone have any experience with this and info on using them on a cruise? Much Thanks! sherin65 Posted September 6, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 6, 2009 Does anyone have any experience with this and info on using them on a cruise? I don't use travelers checks so I don't know about the replacement time or using them on the ship, etc. I was on a private tour a couple of years ago in Belize. The terms were that the payment should be in CASH. When it was time for the group to pay, one lady had travelers checks. The tour operator wouldn't take them because he said his local banks don't take them due to many counterfeits. She claimed it was all she had. They were still fighting about it when we left so I don't know how it was resolved. You may want to consider that they could have limited use when in some ports. Have used travellers checks on many cruises but have been fortunate enough not to have lost or had them stolen. If you take american express travellers checks in dollars the ship will exchange at the face value without commission or you can have them credited to you sea pass account. We always keep them locked in the stateroom safe so there is virtually no chance of them being lost or stolen.

megr1125 Posted September 6, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 6, 2009 i use them all the time amd have not ever had to get them replaced. that said, i don't think they can replace them if you're on the ship...you'd have to wait til you're in a port......but the issuer MIGHT be able to get the ship to assist..... i would give AmEx or Visa or whomever a call. Do NOT get the plastic travelers cheque cards..they can't be used on ships-it even said so in the docs.
John Henry on CC Posted September 6, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 6, 2009 Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I just don't want to take all cash just in case something was to happen, you know! Thanks again! Take the travellers checks and cash them as you need them at the Purser's Desk (Guest Relations) or casino cashier. There is no charge for this. Take enough cash on shore with you. cb at sea Posted September 7, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 7, 2009 We just bring cash, as stow it in our cabin safe....bring larger bills (less bulky) and break them down as needed for small purchases and tips. Travelers checks are a royal pain, IMO!
AlanAllyn Posted September 7, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 7, 2009 Unless something has changed recently, guests with a U.S. bank account can cash a personal check of up to $200 ($250 if you have an American Express card). I have taken advantage of that.
Mrsg324 Posted September 7, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 7, 2009 Another option is to get a prepaid visa card to use on the ship & take a smaller amount of travelers checks.
