new salt Posted September 7, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 7, 2009 We are booked to arrive in Miami by AMTRAK prior to a TA next Spring. Although we intend to get a taxi to our hotel (Hyatt Regency downtown) I am uncertain about the availability of cabs at the station, given that AMTRAK's arrival times are something of a moveable feast schedule is 1855hrs). Is there are fall back option of public transport if it all turns to worms or a car company that can be pre-booked? I have tried to find a coherent map of Miami public transport but have failed miserably. Thanks New Salt
RHefley228 Posted September 7, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 7, 2009 If there isn't one waiting at the station, you can call one (305-444-4444) and they'll come pick you up. Public transportation in Miami is largely a bad joke; you're better off with a cab or car service. TrentS Posted September 7, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 7, 2009 For your own safety you do NOT want to take public transportation in South Florida! Take a taxi, hire a car service or limo, or rent a car... Stay away from the busses and Metrorail.
new salt Posted September 8, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted September 8, 2009 Thank you for your help, we will heed the gypsy's warning re public transport, we have been assured that New York' metro was safe and made something of a foolish assumption. We will probably try and book a car service to meet the train. Rgds New Salt
RHefley228 Posted September 8, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 8, 2009 we have been assured that New York' metro was safe and made something of a foolish assumption. Public transportation in NYC, both the subway and bus service, is safe and convenient, and the entire city is statistically much safer than Miami, especially downtown Miami near the port, the area around the Amtrak station, etc.
new salt Posted September 9, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted September 9, 2009 Thanks again, I did wonder if wearing underpants on my head, pencils up my nose, a little shaving foam artistically dabbed around my mouth and a chainsaw ticking over, while I recite Milton's Paradise lost backwards might help keep nutters away. I am told that it is most efficacious in obtaining railway carriages to oneself. (Or would I just fit in?) Is it really that bad downtown:eek::eek:? RHefley228 Posted September 9, 2009 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2009 Is it really that bad downtown:eek::eek:? After dark? Yes. There are much safer areas: South Beach, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, for starters.
new salt Posted September 9, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted September 9, 2009 Usual thing I suppose, should have sought advice before I booked the hotel. I will pre-book transport from the station and we will dine in-house. As I hit my mid sixties I reflect on how safe my home city (London) was in the 50s for a child, and what a dunghill it has become, clearly it is not alone and until society recovers a sense of wrath nothing will get better.
