Athens / Piraeus

We're (4 of us) cruising the Med next Sept. and plan to do as much as possible on our own, but I have recently had two knees replaced. One good one not so good. Of course I'm hoping I'll be much better by next Sept. but just in case this is my question. If I still have bum knees which affects how long I can walk and how much climbing I can do, can I still hope to do it on my own? Any and all suggestions gratefully accepted.

I'm concerned about the pickpockets --- how threatening are they? If you hold on securely to your belongings, will tourists feel safe? We'll have our money and credut cards safely put away, but will be carrying a bad for incidentals like guide books, sunglasses, etc--- will this make us a target? We have traveled in Barcelona, Rome, Florence without any issue -- is Athens worse or about the same?

I would say about the same, and not at all a physical threat. Of course, being a tourist, you are a target. Use a moneybelt, and you will have no worries. (And watch your camera.)

However, there has been a big uptick in the last year in pickpocketing on the metro, so that is the place to be most vigilant.
