Atm Machine

I'm going on a B to B on the Victory Jan 17th, out of San Juan.My Question is...Do they have Atm machines on any of these islands?.:confused:

I don't make a habit of carrying alot of cash on me while travelling.Can anyone help me?.Thanks

You can carry traveler's checks and cash at the purser's desk.

 

ATMs are kind of expensive to use out of the country and banks are socking on higher and higher fees. You can get an advance on the card you use to secure your shipboard account - I think it is a 3% fee. Probably less than an ATM.

We have found ATMs to be the best and cheapest way to exchange money overseas. You always get the best exchange rate.

Well, yes, if you want to get another country's currency. In all my cruises I have not found any place not happy to take US dollars. I have never needed any cash but dollars.

 

I suppose if you are cruising to europe or somewhere besides the Caribbean (or places I have not been to in the Caribbean) then you may need local currency but the dollar rules everywhere I have been. Never needed an ATM either because credit cards offer the same good exchange rates. Only cash I used was for excursions and tips and stuff from street vendors. Most of the tourist shops take credit cards.

 

It is true that banks levy a "foreign currency transaction fee" when processing credit card transactions out of the country. If you get local curency, when you trade the currency back to dollars the currency exchange takes a fee too. Or you may just stuff it in a sock drawer as a souvenier.

 

It's best to use dollars unless there is no alternative. I don't know if the OP wanted local currency - maybe they assume that ATMs in the countries on the cruise dispense dollars (I don't know, maybe they do.)

What we do is bring about $1000 spending money, and putting it in our room safe. It avoid's ATM fee's, and we can add to our onboard S&S account as needed.

We don't bring nearly that much and always have plenty to take back home. The fact is, unless you are going to the casino, there's really not that much use for cash on a cruise. Unless you just prefer to not use credit cards, you don't need to bring a lot of cash.
