Hi, I recently read a review about alternatives to visiting Rome from Civitavecchia and Santa Marinella was mentioned by a couple of people. I've never been but it might be worth you researching it to see if it looks promising. Apparently you catch the Rome train and it costs about 2Euro and takes about 10 minutes. It was described as a small seaside town with nice beach where Italians go in the summer and at weekends so it's very Italian in character.
