Texas Cruising Posted September 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I know this sounds like a basic question but what do you wear to the dining room? I ALWAYS wear some form of dress.. but my friend going with me HATES dresses and has asked me for help on what to wear. But for the life of me, I can't remember what people wear other than dresses (sun dresses, etc). It has been a couple years since I cruised but I can't think of what to tell her... Thanks for the help.
DQGal Posted September 30, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 30, 2009 On several different threads I've read that ladies are wearing capris with a nice top. Some even said that they will pack one pair of black capris and wear them a couple times, even on elegant night with fancy tops.

habby Posted September 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I would tell her to wear something she would wear to a nice restaurant at home.
Frick_&_Frack Posted September 30, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Nice slacks work well (and coordinate with several tops - saving packing space). Also, nice jeans can also work when paired with a nice blouse(except on Elegant nights).
Kurbanfan Posted September 30, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Depending on which night........casual or cruise elegant........ Casual you will see many of us in capris, jeans, dresses, shorts....... Cruise elegant you will see many of us in cocktail dresses, gowns, slacks...... Your friend will fill right at home if she doesn't like to wear dresses......
Texas Cruising Posted September 30, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Thanks.. She wears scrubs for a living so doesn't dress up very much. She will be happy to hear she can wear capri pants with a nice top.. that is about as dressed up as she gets. I think she is going to skip the formal evening because she does not want to buy a dress for one evening. Thanks for all the suggestions!
Nunu Posted September 30, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I think she is going to skip the formal evening because she does not want to buy a dress for one evening. She doesn't need to have a dress.
yogi2929 Posted September 30, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 30, 2009 For CE night the unofficial uniform for females seems to be black slacks and a pretty top.
jpg1747 Posted September 30, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I wear pants and tops - fancier ones on elegant nights. I rarely wear a dress and if I do it's a very casual one that I can wear with sandals.
Frick_&_Frack Posted September 30, 2009 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2009 For Elegant - I usually go with black slacks and a nice blouse/sweater (depending on itinerary). While it's fun to dress-up in a dress once in a while, slacks are the all-purpose winner lately with me! :D

Perfect Stranger Posted September 30, 2009 #14 Share Posted September 30, 2009 On casual nights I wear jeans and a nice but not fancy top. Capris make me look shorter and fatter so I avoid!
BlueC5Kitten Posted September 30, 2009 #15 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I've worn everything from slacks and a blouse to nice walking shorts and a blouse on non-cruise Elegant nights, to a formal gown or beaded blouse with dress slacks on Cruise Elegant nights. Disney Debbie Posted September 30, 2009 #17 Share Posted September 30, 2009 There are PLENTY of women in pants and a top on formal night. She will not stick out. I think too many of us grew up on the Love Boat and think they all wear tuxedos and gowns with jewels!!

yogi2929 Posted September 30, 2009 #19 Share Posted September 30, 2009 ...and shoes...not sandals. That gave me a chuckle! Mom has found a pair of black Merrill sandals that she loves. She wears them with black socks on CE night and you can hardly tell what she has done. The rest of her outfit is black slacks and a pretty top. Until I started reading this board I never looked at people's shoes!
eastexascruiser Posted September 30, 2009 #20 Share Posted September 30, 2009 In my experience, the ships are freezing, so I always wear layers - always have a jacket or sweater. I've gone to nice slacks with a dressy shirt for formal nights. On the other nights I have a few capris & shorts that I alternate with different shirts. Makes packing easier. Comfy shoes also a must. A few times I tried to wear some new fancy shoes & had blisters galore by the end of the night. Never again!
Texas Cruising Posted September 30, 2009 Author #21 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Thanks for all the replies.. I know she will be very happy to know she can just wear a nice top and black pants on the elegant night and not stick out. I might even look for a pair of black pants and a nice top to wear that night to make her feel more at ease!
cathyz Posted September 30, 2009 #22 Share Posted September 30, 2009 I don't even own a dress. On casual nights I wear cotton pants (black or white sometimes) with a nice shirt. On elegant nights I wear crushed velvet black pants (I've had these for a few years and only wear them on cruises!) with a nice sparkly top. I don't wear heels either, so my elegant night shoes are black Sketchers with sparkly stuff on them, works for me, and I don't hobble around like I see some women doing later in the evening! AZ Karaoke Girl Posted September 30, 2009 #23 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Tell her not to skip the formal eveningbecause she does not have a dress. Black slacks and a nice blouse will do. AGREE. Don't skip elegant night. Food is the best and there are all kinds of dressers in there. Sometimes I wear black slacks with a fancy top, sometimes a pantsuit, I've worn capri's with a fancy top and this cruise I bought a gown at Ross for $15 on sale. Don't skip the meal due to clothing. Plus my experience is the buffet is horrible on elegant nights. Anytime I've skipped elegant night and opted for the buffet, the food tasted bad up there. Maybe a mental thing but eating rueben sandwich isn't the same as lobster or chateubriand.
Senoj84 Posted September 30, 2009 #24 Share Posted September 30, 2009 Mostly I wear some nice capris and a blowse. Occasionally, I would wear a sundress but I'm never able to find any sundresses in time enough.
deepnite10 Posted September 30, 2009 #25 Share Posted September 30, 2009 from my observations..the women have always dressed nicely and appropriately..it has been the men who have shown the tendency to push the limits on what is and not..:o
