Travel time and distances

We are looking into renting a car for our day in St. Croix next week off the Disney Magic. I was wondering how the driving is on the island? I know it is on the other side of the road from USA but how are the road conditions, traffic? We would like to visit a beach, possibly Cane Bay or something else someone might suggest. We would also like to go into Christiansted and do some shopping. If time permits, possibly the Cruzan Rum Factory and/or the Rain Forest. Any suggestions on how to plan our day? We are there from 8:00am-5pm.

Thanks,

Meredith

Rent a car and enjoy exploring the island. You will be given a pocket size road map. It is not completely accurate but good enough. You should have plenty of time to spend enjoying the beach at Cane Bay as well as driving to Christiansted. The worst traffic congestion is around Sunny Isle Mall, but doable. Parking in town can be difficult though. Look for public parking and walk. Just remember to leave no valuables in your car, especially if you stop at a beach. If you like taking photos, drive the whole island as there are lots of places to stop along the road and enjoy the scenery. Have fun and enjoy!

Roads are good, there are traffic signs, lights, speed limits and so forth. There are some off roads that are dirt, but the main roads are paved.

It is a big island, you could spend the whole day driving around if you went from the east end to the west end, northshore and everywhere in between. :) Your plan sounds good: Cane Bay is a nice beach, good snorkeling there if you are interested. Christiansted is nice: you can walk along the boardwalk, have lunch or drinks with a lovely view, check out some of the historical buildings like the Scale House, the Fort..., do some shopping. Cruzan Rum Factory for a tour and samples. The Rain Forest isn't a true rain forest but neat just the same - particularly if you drive out to the east end too -as you can experience two completely different landscapes. The east end is very arid, dry, cactus and shrubs - the rain forest on the west end however is lush, tall dense trees.
