upsell / cabin question

If you book ES you pick your cabin. If you get an upsell call do they give you a choice of cabins, or is it just the category and you could wind up anywhere?

As far as I can tell when you get the call they are trying to fill a specific cabin.

 

For example we got the call about 4 weeks ago on a cruise that we thought was sold out.

 

Apparently Carnival got a cancellation on an aft wrap and our call was for that specific cabin.
