jcastro1202 Posted October 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 19, 2009 Hi everyone. My husband-to-be and I will be traveling to Antigua on the Caribbean Princess for our honeymoon in March. I have all of my other ports planned out, but Antigua seems to be the one that has me stumped. What's near the pier? We would like to maybe take a scenic drive and maybe stop and eat some local food. Any suggestions?:)
geenafeena Posted October 21, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2009 we just got back from antigua. there are shops at the pier and a few places to eat. i didn't think much of it though. once leaving the pier area, there isn't much as far as nice shops. any other questions, just ask. Zeno Posted October 21, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 21, 2009 Personally I would recommend a tour that includes the Historic Park sites (Nelson's Dockyard, Shirley Heights, The Blockhouse, Dows Hill Interpretation Centre). The views from Shirley Heights, Dows Hill and the Blockouse are excellent - very good photo ops.

And when you get back from the above scenic tour then you can do the shops in the near-pier area. ;) .
jml1985 Posted October 21, 2009 #5 Share Posted October 21, 2009 Totally agree with above!! I have been to Antigua twice and around the pier is just some shops, nothing exciting!!! This last time (09/2009) we hired Gordon and he was great. He took us on an island tour and we went to Shirley Heights, Devil's Bridge, a local market, a beach stop and we also went ziplining!!! We went to a few other places but at the moment it escapes me!!! The website to check out is tourguidegordon dot com. He is accomodating and provided us with some local snacks, fruits and beverages (including the local beer). Definitely check him out!!!

Madkitty Posted October 22, 2009 #7 Share Posted October 22, 2009 so all the shops are by the pier - there is no other shopping close?
geenafeena Posted October 22, 2009 #8 Share Posted October 22, 2009 not really, not the nicest shops the farther out you go.

DougYWG Posted November 13, 2009 #11 Share Posted November 13, 2009 What's near the pier? Short answer: not a whole lot. This is not a shopping destination, do it somewhere else.
boowaaccaa Posted November 13, 2009 #12 Share Posted November 13, 2009 Probably Fort James Beach. Can you walk to it?
Karysa Posted November 13, 2009 #13 Share Posted November 13, 2009 Can you walk to it? Distance wise yes. Would I do it ..no!! Too hot, streets are too busy and I would rather dodge waves as I stroll along the beautiful beach than the cars on the road.
judyzoo Posted November 20, 2009 #14 Share Posted November 20, 2009 I was completely unimpressed with the shops and restaurants near the pier, and those away from the pier were quite shabby. But if you have a chance, you might want to visit St. John's Cathedral, which is on a hill just a few blocks from the pier. Old, interesting. The day I was there they were conducting a funeral service, which added an inspirational note.
