need help understanding cabin classification?

We are booked on our first cruise and reading these boards has been great help in getting ready. But some things confuse me a little:confused:. I keep reading questions and comments about cabin classification. Is the number the level? Then what does the letter mean? Sorry if this is a newbie question.:D

The higher the number, the bigger the stateroom. Cat 12 largest...

Don't worry about the question... it's a good one!!

Category 1 cabins are inside, smaller than most and often sold as a single, the advantage being that they sell for 150% of the single rate as opposed to 200% for other cabins.

Category 4 cabins are interiors but are larger, 185 sq ft v. 160 for the cat 1s....

Category 6 cabins are oceanview, generally about 220 sq ft.

Category 8 cabins are balcony cabins and can be on a variety of decks. 185 sq ft with a 35 sq ft balcony... Some 8s have extended balconies that are 60 sq ft.

Category 9 cabins are called 'Premium Balcony' cabins and are located near the aft end of the ship and have large balconies.

Category 11 cabins are 'suites' with an average size of 275 sq ft with a 65 sq ft balcony.

Category 12 cabins are 'suites' with an average size of 345 sq ft with an 85 sq ft balcony.

There are some other cabin classifications that are ship particular but that should get you started!!!

Most cabins (on Carnival) are the same size....it's basically the LOCATION that makes the difference. Anything on higher decks, near the center of the ship is "primo"....forward is less desirable. Low down may be more "stable", but you almost HAVE to use the elevators to get anywhere,....a "con", IMO.

 

Check the deck plans...it will show you where all of the different types of cabins are...you should NEVER book blindly...have the deck plans in front of you!!!!

And to add to the confusion (;)), Spirit class ships just had a reclassification last week.

 

There are no more Cat 11 and 12's.

 

Cat 11 is now divided into 3 categories. JS, OS, VS.

 

JS = Junior Suite which are cabins 4226 and 4235. These have small balconies for a suite due to a stairwell that runs outside the cabin and are the cheapest.

 

VS = Vista Suite. These are the aft wraps (any deck), most expensive of the three.

 

OS = Ocean Suite. All the other cabins (any deck) that used to be Cat 11.

 

Cat 12 is now GS = Grand Suite.

...and as for the letters (ex. 6A-E), it's usually the higher the letter, the higher up on the ship you are.
