karen327 Posted October 22, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 22, 2009 We would like to see Punchbowl cementary and was wondering if it would be feasable to take "the bus" to see it after Pearl Harbor, or if it is something we need to see on the day we are going to rent a car and to the other side of the island. slix1 Posted October 22, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 22, 2009 If you can take the Tantalus Rd/Round Top Drive you will be amazed at the views above the city. The drive either starts or ends within a few blocks of the Punchbowl. It is very winding but beautiful. The pictures don't show the perspective. This is a link to directions. http://gohawaii.about.com/od/oahusights/ss/tantalus.htm
cruzn single Posted October 22, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 22, 2009 Taking The Bus to the Punchbowl involves transfers, and walking uphill into the Punchbowl. That is one place where it is best to have a car.
Rare Lionesss Posted October 22, 2009 #4 Share Posted October 22, 2009 You will need to take a private car, city bus and get dropped off on the road, take a walk up the hill about one and half miles to the gates of the cemetary . If you do a bus tour they do not let you walk around the cemetary any more. The last time we walked around on a bus tour was 1992. It is nice to see, but if you go on your own you will miss a lot of the history. Safe travels.
westendgirl Posted November 22, 2009 #5 Share Posted November 22, 2009 Plan it on the day you have your rental car. We have been to Honolulu 6 times and this is one of our favorite places to visit. Beautiful, peaceful, historic and FANTASTIC views of the city. If you're able, walk up the inclined hill to the overlook. Absolutely worth it. And you will certainly get an earbug of the opening theme to "Hawaii 5-0" when you visit the military memorial and see the large statue. Da-da-da-da-da-DA! PS Also a good site for a picnic lunch.
