Taxi availability at NY Pier

Can someone give me an idea of how difficult it might be to get a cab after docking in NYC?

The taxi line was impossible last September when our cruise ended....after twenty minutes we walked across the street and found a lot of cabs available (who didn't want to get stuck in the line up top...) good luck!

We'll be on the Constellation next fall for a Canada/NE cruise. If we arrange in advance for town car/limo service to pick us up at the terminal and take us to the airport, does anyone know if the car has to wait in the taxi line, or whether it should somehow be faster? Can the driver meet us and assist with bags like at an airport?

I've heard about the horrific taxi lines at the NYC pier, and was hoping that a town car service would be easier.

Bruce,

Depending on who you contact, your limo/taxi willnot be able to beat the pier directly when you dock. However,I'm sure that you will see your driver with a sign with your name on it (like at the airport) Or you might be given a tollfree number to call when you have cleared customs and retrieved your luggage. Your driver will be in the vicinity, just might not be at the pier.

Getting a yellowcab, especially if you have more than 2 ships docking at the same time will be extremely difficult. As much as I'm all for finding our own transportation to and from a pier, using Celebrity transfers might be the way to go. There are buses that are used by the cruise line that will go to the airports. That might be the way to go!

We had a driver last September pick us up in front of the terminal. It took him a good 40 minutes to get up the ramp. We kept in touch via cell phone. Depending on how many ships in port, traffic can be terrible. icon_razz.gif

We docked in NYC with three other ships! icon_eek.gif

Don't even go upstairs, just walk right out of the terminal (at the street level), and walk one (two even better) streets over and hail a cab. We had three roller bags and it was no big deal. We had a cab in 10 minutes. If you go upstairs, it could take 2-3 hours to get a cab.

We found the color of your embarkation stub helped determine how quickly we could get off. We always make sure we are among the first off..because we always do our own flights, whick makes it easier to get off early. In New York we waited, maybe, 20 minutes...no problems.
