Is Royal Caribbean stuck on a VELVET ROBE

Recommended Posts

I would like to know who is reponsible for the Dance and Ice skating shows and WHEN are they going to change, these shows are in need to be changed, yes they are nice but I been seeing them on every cruise I done since 2000,only the ice skating has changed a bit, every time they are done very well and I still enjoy them but is becoming repeticious,we are talking 4 years, the actors change but the show is about the same, next time I hope I don't see that lady on that RED Velvet Robe, and the flying ice skaters in the MSN outfits flying around, we need more MAGIC SHOWS, more acrobats, balancing acts.I also seen one thing that I hope they keep doing, and that was bringing classic singers, on my cruise this April we got to see The Platters, now lets bring Gladdy's knights,Anita Baker, Cher,Donna Summers,Charo,Barry Manelo,Cool and the gang,Dolly P.,Ashley brothers, just to name a few, I just wish for Royal Caribbean to concentrate more on the entretaiment they are doing great with the ships but we need to see new acts, that is my only complaint, other wise they are doing great. Some people may say they giving less food but they are not reading the whole menu.
Hope that some one from the company sees these lines and passes the hint to the right representative.
Thank you.

I have to agree, but I too realize by repeating the same cruise I will get the same shows again. We are going on our second AOS cruise in as many years. I enjoyed the Ice Show and Velvet Ropes, but we will skip those shows this year. I look at it as an opportunity to see some things we missed the first time.
Some may wonder why the same cruise again? Well, we did the Eastern, Western and Southern, and this ship and itinerary (Aruba) is our favorite of all. We will probably do Alaska or the Panama Canal too, but for now, the AOS rules!

When Royal Caribbean creates a production show it is estimated to have a useful life of about 4 years so if you sail on the same ship as you have, you can expect to see the same production shows. It simply costs too much to change the shows more often. A show will have a shorter run if it consistently gets bad reviews. If you switch from the Adventure to a different ship you will see different shows. As for the headline entertainers that you mention such as Cher, Donna Summer, Barry Manilow, etc, you will never see them on a ship because it would be too expensive to book them. Someone like Cher could easily sell out in a major arena so why would she appear on a cruise ship. Headline entertainment on ships will always be limited to people that have never been famous or may have been famous 30 years ago and basically can't get any other bookings.

Donuts, is there anything they can't do....

Any production show, whether on land or sea, takes at least a year or more or so to come up with a concept, design, cost, build, rehearse and install. Times this by how many ships? In rotation? At a cost in the 7-figures? Not cost effective, especially for a department that's not directly revenue producing like bar or casino.

If you want to see serious big-name headliners, look for specialized charters. You may be paying a few grand though. Charo does work the cruise lines . . . Here's the Explorer in about 2 weeks

and don't forget

PS - I think Cher or Barry Manilow would show up on an Atlantis/RSVP cruise though

Supperjerry makes a very good point concerning the entertainers that are available. Gladys Knight is a Vegas regular and does not need to do the cruise ship circuit. I also noticed, while in Vegas, that Barry Manilow was scheduled to appear there. Of those mentioned, many still book regular engagements in much larger venues than a cruise ship.
The acts that do book (i.e. Platters) often don't even resemble the original group, as many have either died or been replaced. There are also many knock-offs of these original groups. I have heard of three or four different Coasters, Drifters, Platters, etc. touring at any given time. While they may be good, they are often not the real deal.

Here is The Platters website which makes the statement that The Platters are the only group of this type that contain an (one) original member - Herb Reed : The Platters
That is not to say they are not an excellent act, just understand what you are seeing. Also note the statement that there are several groups touring that call themselves the Platters. I only offer this to back-up my comments above.

I agree, we were also on the 4/25 AOS cruise and my only complaint of RCCL is their entertainment. Most of the people on these ships are returning customers which the line clearly wants to attract the same customers back, all the Voyager class ships alternate itineraries every other week. So you will have many people cruising a ship at least 2x. We are back on the AOS Thanksgiving week.

Thank you all for your great feed back, and I understand the demand for the well known artist, but I think that we in the great America's and the world we have a lot of talented people and if the cruise companies would do a bit of talent hunt they could book some talented people from many contries just like they have great people serving, cleaning, etc.from many countries of the world and they would practically work for pennies just to have that chance to be discover,I only guess that it could not be as easy as I put it but I think they could try as Cruising now days is more popular than 10 years ago.
I hate to say it but I seen one great show aboard a Carnival ship and this performers just got on board in Cozumel to perform while we were at dock side then they debarked before we left the port, I found that it was great for the artist and boosted their spirits as it did to the passengers, we all enjoyed the show as much as the performers enjoyed being there.
And for SuzieQ123 Hi there, what a cruise it was great, I was the one person that asked the captain about a bigger dance club on future ships, his reply was that they are having a hard time filling Jesters, and I know why; people will walk into a small room(compared to the theater is a small room) and think they seen it all and think nothing much can take place there, but if you make a big room like studio B like during the talent show,or the selebration of the 60's 70's and they stay there cause they like the size of the room plus they don't know what could develope, for example: in NYC you walk into a big dance club and automatically you start to expect to see something, like dancers in the air or just Co2 coming down on the dancers from way above the cieling, and many lights or some kind of show.
I also got a comment later, that they don't want to make it like a zoo or like Carnival's wild scene, but every thing you do if you do it with class it will atract classy and educated people not just wild people, I may not write perfect English but I know a dump place from a classy place and all depends on how is done, is not the music only, is the presentation and I think that Royal Caribbean does a great presentation of their ships but they need to do just a little bit more, only a bit more for those of us that keep going back and enjoy active lifes even if we were 92+, I want to make the ship rock but in a nice way with a great room and great music and artist from all around the world.
But I guess I'll keep watching at my guess watch without hands, as that great comedian said he had, maybe some day will see something like what I'm saying here but is only a dream with a wish.
