Children's Tuxedos

Recommended Posts

RCI does not currently rent tuxedos for children as I read from their website but I contacted them to confirm that they would no longer be allowing rentals from CruiselineFormalwear in the staterooms upon embarkation. I received confirmation of this from Catrina Ortiz, Tuxedo Specialist from RCI. I told them that I hope they will consider children's tuxedo's in the future and I thought her reply was very interesting...

Dear Kerrie:

Thank you for your recent email concerning childrens tuxes. We have had a lot of requests for childrens sizes and unfortunately they probably will not be available any time soon. With the anticipation of the Oasis of the Seas, we have been quite swamped and have not had a chance to even look at the idea yet. We do have a website www.cruisecritic.com where guests can go to offer their opinion on certain things. RCCL checks the feedback daily and things eventually can change. Again we apologize we do not have a more definite answer.

Thank you for choosing Royal Caribbean International.

So if there are others of you out there whose young son likes to wear tuxes and you would be interested in having it on board from the RCI let them know. My son loves wear a tux on a cruise--he's 7 now and I will be renting one locally, but I would prefer not to have to carry his tux and my husbands.

My daughter bought her boys tuxedos on Ebay. They were very reasonable and the boys looked so handsome in them.

What I found interesting was the part of your post which I bolded - the RCI rep makes it sound like CruiseCritic is a child company of RCI. I know there is a strong business relationship between the two, and that RCI has been known to follow some CC threads, but I don't think RCI is the parent company. Hmmm..... And does the rep mean RCI checks CC feedback daily? Double hmmm....:confused:

I second eBay for those needing children's tuxedos. If you have to carry the tux onboard anyway, you can find some great deals on ebay for probably less than the cost of a rental. And if there is more than one occasion for them to wear the tux, buying versus renting becomes even a bigger bargain.

My grandson, now 9, also enjoys dressing up. Because our last 2 cruises were only 5 months apart and that it might be his last chance to wear one (with the way the dress code has been changing), I bought him a brand new tuxedo on eBay from a tuxedo shop that was closing. The pants came unhemmed and with slider waist adjustment that will allow for growth. With the pants let down a little, he should be able to wear it again for our April 2010 cruise. Even if couldn't, it was well worth the little it cost to watch him strut down the Royal Promenade by himself and have all the ladies (and many of the gents) complimenting him. And there is something timeless in watching a young boy unbutton his jacket as he takes his seat in a formal setting.

Ebay purchases:

Tuxedo Jacket ... $17.50 new

Tuxedo Pants ... $8.00 new

White vest / black bow tie ... $3.22 used, former rental

Blue vest / blue formal tie ... $$ new - don't ask! (at least as much as the tux but they also had matching set for DH and with them both having blue eyes...)

Pictures to treasure for a lifetime ... PRICELESS !!!

Have a great cruise!

Thanks all for the ebay tip, I will check it out. One of the reasons I posted this was the response said that RCI regularly reads this board for feedback. FloridaPalms I'm glad your grandson likes to dress up, my son put on his forst tux when he was 3 for a wedding and he's loved them ever since--thinks he's James Bond now. He really enjoys all the compliments and the attention too when he wears it and he is a gentleman. I will definitely look into ebay--Thanks all!

Thanks Kerrie. Ah yes, James Bond. (Of course given a choice between my grandson on my arm or Sean Connery, well

... sorry kid! :p;):D)

On soapbox:

OK RCI, if you're reading this, there are some of us with children or grandchildren who like to dress up. If you can't help us by renting formalwear for kids, at least help us to keep the atmosphere in the MDR a little more formal on formal nights so our young ones don't feel that out of place. Enforce your dress code so our little gentlemen aren't dining with a bunch of guys in T-shirts and shorts.

Off soapbox.

No worries - you can still get the tuxedos (for men, not children) delivered to your stateroom. RCI just doesn't use that particular tuxedo company anymore but you can rent them directly from RC's website at: http://tuxedorentals.rccl.com/tuxedo/tuxrental.nsf or when you are onboard the ship.

Have a great cruise!

Take a trip to your local Penney's. You can probably buy one for less than the cost of a rental. I just checked it out on line. Here is what I found:
