We are looking for the cheapest r/t transport from Hartford, CT to the NY pier for a NCL cruise in February. Ideas ? Thanks in advance....

might be a long haul but look at amtrak. if you have someone that can drive you to new haven it is not a bad trip

Amtrak goes from Hartford - I'm seeing $34 rt. Bus is $30 if you buy online. New Haven is about $29 - hardly worth the gas money for the price difference.

but the New Haven Rail road commuter train from New Haven is less than $15 each way...and it leaves every hour.(it goes to Grand Central not penn station but the cab ride is the about the same amount $10-15 per cab.)

Sid - that's my point. Future amtrak prices are $34 round trip from Hartford and metronorth from New Haven is about $29 round trip. You get better service from New Haven, but they have to get a ride there and pay the gas to do that. The bus leaves very frequently from Hartford to NY.

The $34 Amtrak fare, http://www.amtrak.com, from Hartford is one-way; round-trip is $68. Greyhound Lines and Peter Pan Bus Lines, http://www.peterpanbus.com, are $30 round-trip when purchased online. Refundable walk-up fares are $57. Boston Deluxe, http://www.bostondeluxe.com,is $30 round-trip, but operates only on Fri, Sat, and Sun. There is a rush hour only bus from Hartford to New Haven, operated by Dattco (route 20), http://www.dattco.com, from which connections can be made to MTA Metro-North Railroad trains, http://www.mta.info, but when adding the $4.30 one-way bus fare to the $14 or $18.50 one-way railroad fare, the total amount is greater than the bus fare direct from Hartford to New York.

Bottom line: the least expensive fare is Greyhound Lines or Peter Pan Bus Lines from Hartford to New York City; then a short walk or inexpensive taxi ride to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

It looks like we'll use Peter Pan bus from Hartford to New York. Looks to be about a mile and a half cab ride to the Manhatten pier from the bus terminal. About a $10 ride. Seems like the best option. Thanks for all the input....

While the tickets for Peter Pan Bus Lines and Greyhound Lines are interchangable amongst the two carriers, I find Peter Pan Bus Lines to be a better managed and maintained company. If this important to you as well then be certain to look closely at the schedules to make sure you choose the appropriate time. Beyond that, you've probably made the best choice given your criterion of minimizing expense.
