FPJC03 Posted May 18, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2004 Whoever loves Key West: What are your most memorable and worthwhile shore excursions, either through RCCL or on your own? I have been there twice and love the atmosphere and uniqueness of the place. It is truly "Margaritaville"!!! Frank C. CSW Posted May 18, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 18, 2004 DH and I walk from the dock to the Southern most tip marker, sightseeing along the way. Met a couple of young adults who raved about the Kayak Tour. There are two choices, not sure which one they took. CSW
DedeM Posted May 18, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 18, 2004 I've been there several times for the weekends and one thing I always tell someone to do is go on the Conch Train Tour. Yes, it looks hokey, and you feel like a tourist, but they give you a wonderful tour of the island and explain the history behind many things. I loved it. Whenever I've gone down there with someone new, I've taken it Hemingway House (esp if you love cats!), the lighthouse (walk up the stairs - not for people with bad knees LOL). I don't do these tours anymore, I just go to relax and party. Maybe next time I go I'll do the Duval Crawl with the boat people I love to try out the restaurants. A&B Oyster House is pretty good for lunch (downstairs). Cafe Marquesa for dinner. Crabby Dick's for cheap oysters and a great view of Duval Street (upstairs - sit outside on the patio). There are so many fine restaurants. I love to sit outside and people watch - that's the best part for me. There are more that I haven't tried that get great reviews. Louie's Backyard? Don't eat at Sloppy Joe's. Yes it's great for drinking and partying, but don't waste your money on their food. I suggest avoiding Margaritaville, at least don't eat there - the food's not worth it. Get a t-shirt (if you must) or a frozen margarita but eat somewhere better. Wow, now I really want to go back down there!! DedeM Posted May 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 18, 2004 Oh yeah, the Butterfly exhibit is gorgeous. We almost didn't do this, but it's very worth it. Nitra Posted May 18, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2004 I love Sloppy Joe's and the appetizers are pretty darn good. I never really eat a meal at any port because I paid for the food on the ship so I go back there and eat. Mallory Square at sunset is fun. I mostly just browse around and then after dinner, on the ship, hit Sloppy Joe's for drinks and dancing! nhdee Posted May 19, 2004 #11 Share Posted May 19, 2004 I've never been to Key West when on a cruise. My first time will be in June. But, I am a Key West lover and have been there 3 times. Margaritaville - if you are a Buffet fan, get a t-shirt - the margarita's aren't that good and the food is ok....Stop by Sloppy Joe's just to say you've been there, lots of fun! - If you like Bloody Mary's go to the Hog's Breath - they are the best and very good Conch fritters, make sure you wave at the online cameras! Do the Conch train tour - gives you a quick tour but you do get some history. Key West is a wonderful place. If you are there during sunset - definitely do Mallory Square! Above all - have a great time!! hkmom Posted May 19, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 19, 2004 when we were in key west in april my girls and i walked all the way to the end of duvall street to the butterfly conservatory. we didn't take the ships tour and it cost us half the price. it is about a mile walk on the right side of the street right before you hit the southernmost tip of the u.s. this was the most beautiful butterfly farm that i have ever seen. we were in the one in st. martin and in martinique. this is just beautiful. on the walk there you can look at the galleries and shops and very drunk people. just let the people at the conservatory know that you are from the rhapsody and you will be able to get in even if it is closed to the public. on the way back my kids refused to walk and we took a pedicab back to where we started from. this was also fun. hkmom legend hawaii here we come thanksgiving carnival pride til we see our stingrays again on the rhapsody
kimwilly Posted May 19, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 19, 2004 Below is a reply I previously posted: I guess I cannot say enough about Key West! Renting bikes would probably be your best bet to see all of Key West in the few hours that the cruise ships stay. You must walk Duval Street for shopping and get to Sloppy's and Margaritaville!! Mallory Square is great if the ship stays long enough for the sunset. Ernest Hemingway's House is a must and do not forget to have your picture taken at "The Southernmost Point". If you just want to relax at the beach, go to Smather's Beach. Nice and relaxing. And when you return to the ship, I am certain you will say that you will want ot return some day. And when you do,take a car from Miami and drive the most beautiful drive you could ever imagine over the bridges to Key West. Because it is next to Heaven.
