Researching these ports for January, mv Discovery, any advice appreciated. Tend to do our own thing/taxi, just the 2 of us, reasonably fit. Some specific ideas/questions, but all info welcome.

Kuantan, port Gelong, 15mls north of city, 8am - 7pm. Can we hire a taxi at port? Head for caves/waterfall at Sungai Lembing? or other ideas? .

Sihanoukville 7am - 11pm Thinking of Ream Nat Park. Can we wing it, or do we need to pre-book ranger/boat? Can't find info/contacts on the net.

Saigon. We have 3 nights here. Want to see the tunnels, war remnants, chinatown, any other must-do in the city? And the delta- trips seem to get mixed reviews, tours/operators/places to seek out or avoid?

Nha Trang. Only a morning. Really struggling here.

Da Nang. 7am - 5pm. Struggling here too.

Ha Long Bay 2pm til 5pm next day. Full day want to go to Hanoi, ship's coach tour £87/$135 or diy? The half-day, a boat trip round the bay/karsts?

Or any other ideas?

And currency to carry in Singapore/Indonesia/Malaysia/Cambodia/Vietnam/Hong Kong

Many thanks, John Bull

We are hiring a private motor boat for Mekong Delta, leaving from Saigon (instead of 2.5 hour bus ride). We are splitting the cost between 10 people.

Hi Jade,

Thanks for your input, certainly 5 hours in a coach with a little bit of splashing around in a boat isn't our idea of a great day out.

We're on a small ship, think we'll be berthed at Khanh Poi port (?) in the city. We'll have just the one day for the Mekong (but midnight to midnight if neccessary ;)), it'll be our second day there.

But I'm a bit confused, mebbe it's google-earth that's confused me

Does a motor boat from HCMC mean down the Saigon River to the sea & then back up the Mekong ? - looks like one helluva long way round?

We're just two, but could pre-book if not desperately expensive & hope to recruit from our fellow-passengers - Brits, tend to wing-it, so plenty won't be committed elsewhere & HCMC is well into our cruise

Be grateful if you could give a little more detail, esp time-scale

Regards
