Godmothers - could someone explain?

Everyone is buzzing about who the godmothers of Oasis are. And that there is one for all seven 'neighborhoods'. This is the first I've ever heard about ships having godmothers. Could someone explain all this and its significance to me? Thanks!

Here is some info on the history/tradition of christening new ships:

Men used to do the christening, but about 100 years ago it became the norm to have a woman christen the new ship. Hence, godmothers.
