Passports for shore excursions?

We are planning to bring our passports and were wondering if we need to carry them on us for shore excursions or do most people lock them in the cabin safe? Also, how big is the safe? We will be on the Carnival Valor - 3/7/10, in a balcony cabin. Thanks.

I cant remember the safe size, maybe 9 inches tall by 12 inches wide? too small for a laptop.

 

Some ports require photo IDs, so passport of drivers license, either will work.

I have both a passport book and a passport card. I keep the book in the cabin safe and carry the card as my ID on shore.

We only take photocopies ashore and leave the passports in the safe. There are some cruises where your passport will be embargoed and kept in the Pursers Office. Safes are usually about 12W X 9D x 5H

If this is a Caribbean cruise, you don't need a passport to go ashore--none of the countries require that for cruise passengers.

The safes are only a bit larger than hotel safes...not big enough for a laptop! If you're worried about it, lock it in your suitcase, however, the room attendant has no time to mess with your stuff---they're too busy!
