What to do instead of Rome?

Because we spent five days in Rome in June, we are looking into other options for our one port day in May and a search on this forum will produce several recent threads asking the same question.

Many suggest Tarquinia, with its Etruscan heritage, an easy 20 or 30 minute direct bus ride away from the port.

We most probably will rent a car and spend most of our day in Orvieto, with a possible stop at the end in small Civita.

Another option is to take the train to Ostia Antica, an ancient site along the lines of Pompei.

To reach it, you take the train from Civitavecchia to Rome, getting off at the Ostiense stop. From there, take the Roma-Lido train, getting off at the Ostia Antica stop. Directions to the site from the train from their web site:

Cross the highway using the pedestrian bridge. To reach the site from the pedestrian bridge: keep walking straight ahead, cross a busy (!) road and after 100 meters turn left to get to the entrance (two minutes).

Official web site where you can read more about the excavations: http://www.ostia-antica.org/

We have done both the bus to Tarqunia and rented a car and drove to Ovierto and Civita. We really enjoyed driving to Orvieto and Civita better than Tarqunia but we did get a little lost.

Interactive map of Tarquinia (produced by the city): http://www.geoplan.it/mappe-cartine/mappa-comune-tarquinia-VT.htm#

From Civitavecchia our ship offered a tour named Medieval Hills and Olive Oil. It was very interesting. We drove through the beautiful Tuscan countryside, visited a small village perched on top of a hill and then descended to an ancient olive grove. We saw the antique olive press and had a chance to sit in the shade of the trees and sample varieties of the local olive oil as well as the local wine. We enjoyed it very much. It was very laid back and relaxing as opposed to a frenetic tour of Rome.

Have a GREAT cruise!
