JOHN 57 Posted December 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Hello, we plan to visit San Juan on the Victory, and I would like to know, if there is any local beers to sample. I always like to sample the local foods and drinks. Thank you, John
rainforestgirl Posted December 16, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Medallia is THE local beer. It is a light beer. Try it. There is a microbrewery right in OSJ that brews a number of beers. Located right near the Old Harbor.
JOHN 57 Posted December 17, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted December 17, 2009 Hello, think you for the info, and yes. I will try it. John
StCroixCruiser Posted December 30, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2009 the microbrewery does have some decent brews. The Puerto Rican beer, Medalla, really has a weird after taste for me and I prefer to avoid it.
ladybugg_456 Posted December 31, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Yeah, the microbrewery is called Old Harbor Brewery Steak & Lobster House. It's located at 202 Tizol St., Old San Juan. The hours are 11:30 am to 1:00 am, daily. It looks like they have 5 different varieties, one of those being seasonal. Sampler it is for me! We're hoping to go there when we sail on the Victory too. John 57 - What is your sail date? Ours is February 7th, 2010.

rasta Posted January 2, 2010 #8 Share Posted January 2, 2010 I really liked the Medallia beer. What's the deal with the little 10 oz cans though?!
carib123 Posted May 14, 2010 #9 Share Posted May 14, 2010 I really liked the Medallia beer. What's the deal with the little 10 oz cans though?! When we were in Aruba they served their local beer, balashi, in a ten ounce bottle. I was told the reason they serve beer in the small bottles is so that when you get to the bottom of the bottle the beer is still cold. Sounds like a marketing ploy
JOHN 57 Posted June 30, 2010 Author #10 Share Posted June 30, 2010 Good Morning, thank you all for your responses, I will try the Medallia. Thank you, John
gonzo1124 Posted July 7, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 7, 2010 In PR, just like in many other Caribbean islands, they can only sell 10 oz cans or bottles. You will not see 12 oz beer containers. This is an old rule that apparently drinking 10 oz will not get you as drunk as drinking 12 oz. No, I'm not kidding...look it up.
rasta Posted July 11, 2010 #12 Share Posted July 11, 2010 I prefer to drink out of a 40 oz. bottle! Strange, I've never had a beer get warm before finishing it.

Imported beers are sold in 12 oz bottles (I have some Sam Adams in my fridge right now) & Grolsch is 15.2 oz (have some of those too :D). Medalla is a cheap beer and it's sold in the smaller cans so it can be sold even more cheaply.
